tlmoe, bodily autonomy, and YOU! (/me)

OKAY I admit it I still occasionally lurk on the TLMOE subreddit, and it’s every bit what you’d imagine I suppose. Some samples regarding Melissa:

That Melissa had better stop being being a bitch and just give Todd a baby.

Melissa should suck it up and have a baby instead of guilting Erica into doing it.

I think she’s super selfish for not having a kid with Todd.

The survival of the human race is literally at stake.  She’s putting
her feelings ahead of that and those feelings ultimately aren’t worth
shit if there is no society left.

For lack of a better word, it is bugging the hell out of me, because I am in a similar situation! It’s never outright said that Melissa doesn’t want to get pregnant because of her mental health situation, but we can assume it’s a factor, and – yo. I’m not ruling it out entirely, I’m honestly not, but I think adoption is the way to go. Obviously I’m not one of only a handful of people left alive after an apocalypse either, but –

I really appreciate that the show/Melissa has doubled down on this. I mean – Melissa is actually really great with kids and doesn’t dislike them at all. Her husband wants a baby and has made that very clear. This series of TLMOE has been all about trying to ensure the human race lives on and she’s the only woman of childbearing age who hasn’t basically signed on to have as many kids as possible. Maybe she should just suck it up! But she’s not gonna, because it’s her freaking body, and even over the six-month timeframe of the last episode she doesn’t once waver in Not Wanting A Baby Ever.

It’s a little thing in a show that’s basically a live-action cartoon but I’m really grateful for it. [nb. If the show goes back on this for any reason, disregard this post entirely and note my pissed-off-ness.]

I really, really love the Melissa-Jasper sub-plot which TLMOE’s been doing. Arguably, those two are affected the worst by the trauma around them, because Melissa has a mental illness and Jasper is literally a child. So Melissa gives him space, and speaks to him gently, and doesn’t pressurize him to talk when he goes non-verbal. I don’t think it’s a case of Melissa mothering him, because she’s made it clear she doesn’t want to be a mother, but she’s doing so well treating Jasper like a person when everyone else treats him like a baby or a generic symbol of their hopes for the future.

It’s not the sort of relationship you see often on TV, I’m really glad they’ve gone this way with it.

melissa leaves a care package for jasper

…am I right

#You
know I agree with all of this except Melissa but the problem is no
matter how much I think about it I cannot conclude WHERE she belongs#Like it could be any of them#She’d ABSOLUTELY do any of those just…depends on where she’s At that day#There’s no Wrong place to put her I’m just stumped on how that makes it feel like there’s no Right place to put her?#But
also there being no Wrong place means they’re all the Right place cause
you can’t go wrong so there’s only Right Choices left#Like she’d be ‘We’ve got food at home’ with Tandy no question#Even if she wanted it…she’d deny herself it just to spite him#’No Tandy we’re good’#(I
don’t know why she’s with a character from the show in this scenario
since this is obviously an AU where the apocalypse didn’t happen#(Whatever ungodly force shoves all these people together into the same weird family unit in that universe is terrifying)#Actually no she’d do the coffee one with Tandy what am I even thinking#No way to more finely rub it in than to tempt him with proximity#Anyway
that’s all I got my brain has no more for me but she could be anywhere
on this graph but definitely black coffee w/ Tandy#…Melissa would drop him off at home and go back and get herself a happy meal#I guess they’re neighbours in this scenario cause she eats it outside so he’ll see her from next door and he’ll Know

These are FANTASTIC tags and also heck I got so stuck on Melissa because she’s pragmatic (”We have food at home”) she’s ruthless/kinda mean sometimes (*orders single black coffee and leaves*) AND she’s good with children and would totally take them to McDonalds probably??? And has a childish streak herself?

(I love Complicated Female Characters a looooot I love Melissa)

also these tags remind me of the time when Melissa put that beer juuuust out of Tandy’s reach and left him to dehydrate in the sun which is pretty much torture tactics holy shit Melissa you’re a Problematic Fave

#reasonstowatchtlmoe many different and interesting relationships between women

Melissa for the ask game – starklinqs

general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life
hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would bang
hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff (I think)
best quality: Is pragmatic (always a good quality in an apocalypse) and generally tries her hardest to be nice
worst quality: Her utter RUTHLESSNESS, damn. I mean… I suppose technically that’s also a good quality in an apocalypse but still, it’s not really admirable. Also, as much as a shit as Tandy was to her, he didn’t really deserve the torture of being restrained on a hot day with drinks just out of reach. Fucking hell Mel
ship them with: Todd!
brotp them with: Carol, it was a shame that relationship kinda fizzled out eventually
misc. thoughts: I very much enjoy seeing a character with a mental illness in a sitcom who has characteristics beyond Being Mentally Ill

melissa chartres: not a mother, but one hell of an aunt
