the princess and the frog

the new disney announcements

…Or that’s how it felt? Like my first thoughts weren’t “Wow a load of new toys!” but “How the hell am I meant to find time to watch THAT MUCH STUFF, especially if I want to keep up with the basic MCU story?” I’m getting old.

That being said…

  • Marvel’s What If looks pretty good. It’ll be nice to see Yondu again.
  • The I Am Groot shorts and the GOTG Holiday Special excite me, but since the Special is coming out in 2022 I guess that’s confirmation we won’t see GOTG 3 until 2023 at least. Also, how on Earth are they going to do it without Gamora, who is still AWOL in-canon? :/
  • I guess the third MCU Spider-Man really will be a multiverse and I don’t know how to feel about that.
  • Fantastic Four? In this economy?
  • omg Xochitl Gomez (Dawn from The Babysitters Club) is playing America Chavez! I’m super unfamiliar with the character but she’s such a good young actress, I’m so happy for her!
  • Oh a Buzz Lightyear thing! I guess that means Buzz Lightyear of Star Command (I used to love that show as a kid) isn’t canon anymore? That’s a shame. I am pettily delighted that Chris Evans has basically taken over from all-round asshole Tim Allen though.
  • Honestly the news that T’Challa won’t be recast is kind of really saddening, to me at least. That means he as a character is dead in-universe, after cheating death a couple of times already. He was a great character even without the superheroics and now he’s just gone. I get it but man, how absolutely crushing.
  • Oh wow a Tiana/Princess and the Frog show! Wow finally Disney are paying attention to her. It only took what, ten years after the movie?
  • Obviously Hayden Christensen back as Anakin is the big exciting news!! for me, but the other Star Wars stuff looks good too. It’ll be nice to have a Lando show. (I was kind of hoping it’d be Old Lando looking for his daughter rather than Young Lando though.)
  • I wonder if they can sneak Hayden into the new Ahsoka show as well.

Note that all these announcements happened around 1am my time.

Disneyland’s Splash Mountain To Be Reimagined With ‘Princess And The Frog’ Theme — Deadline

Splash Mountain, one of the mainstay rides at Disneyland whose theme was based on the Uncle Remus Br’er Rabbit story from Disney’s controversial 1946 film Song of the South, will be reimagined based on the animated film The Princess and the Frog. The news comes amid growing calls to change the ride’s theme in the…

Disneyland’s Splash Mountain To Be Reimagined With ‘Princess And The Frog’ Theme — Deadline

Eyyy! I have never actually been on Splash Mountain, only viewed it from a distance, but I’m really happy Disney is doing this. Tiana and TPATF have long been ignored by the theme park people.

I know from just a quick glance online that people are already complaining about this and I view their motives with extreme suspicion, as I have seen the original ride on a video and apart from the drop at the end it is utterly, utterly boring.

As many of you know, I’m a long-suffering Tiana fan. When I say ‘suffering’ I mean to say that I suffer because Tiana has barely any merchandise. Finding anything with her on it is rare. Right now, the only stuff I can find is on the BoxLunch website. There’s a shirt, a figure and two bags you can buy. She also has two Funko Pops and a shirt on Tee-Turtle but that’s it.

This is the same issue I see with Finn. Finn has some merchandise that is aimed towards kids but if you’re an adult and want a Finn T-shirt, you are shit outta luck. Why? Like finding a shirt with just him on it seems impossible and whether people want to admit him, he’s one of the main leads. Kylo is not the male lead of Star Wars, Finn is. And people adore John Boyega. He gives people heart eyes so why not make merchandise with him on it?

And before people come in here to say, “Disney/LF will only make merchandise for popular characters” the Porgs have an abundance of merch and I haven’t met a single person who was clamoring for porg merchandise. You’re also talking about Disney that released two films this year that have reached the highest grossing movie list. There is no excuse to push aside two black characters and ignore them.

When I was at Disneyland Paris I kept a look out for Tiana, because she was high up on the list of characters I wanted to meet. The princesses who don’t show up anywhere else (Jasmine shows up in Agrabah, for example) you can meet at the Princess Pavilion, but I checked back there all the time and she was never there. It was all Snow White, Cinderella and Rapunzel. It’s so maddening how they downplay her.

Seems like only yesterday we were both little girls wishing our fairy tale dreams…and tonight they’re finally coming true!

I love Charlotte and Tiana so much (and Charlotte’s dad, honestly) because very rarely could a mixed-race friendship like this work back then, even with small children, much less carry over into adulthood. The fact that Charlotte’s dad not only let Charlotte be friends with the daughter of someone who worked for him, a girl from a relatively poor family, but a black girl, and never taught Charlotte to hide her love for Tiana is amazing to me. And Charlotte, as spoiled as she is, never hesitates to put Tiana first.

And sharing clothes with Tiana??? Doing so publicly, at a party, knowing everyone would know the blue dress Tiana was wearing belonged to Charlotte? Huge deal. HUGE. People would be making snide comments about Charlotte and no doubt her dad for months after that in real life. But Charlotte didn’t care. She didn’t care that she went to a predominantly black neighborhood and was visibly affectionate with her working-class black friend in front of everybody, she didn’t care about sharing clothes with her, or hugging her at the end, even though it could’ve ruined her social standing.

Charlotte loves Tiana. And I’ve always liked that because too often the privileged, popular friend makes the choice to snub their less-popular, less-privileged friend at some point. Charlotte never does. And she probably put up with a lot of s***, too.

Yeah, I was waiting for the heel turn till the end of the third act to be honest, but it never came.
