Rory Williams character study: I don’t know what he said to you to make you marry him

Brian was a late addition to Rory’s story, but in his very first scene, it’s clear he may be the root of Rory’s Amy-related insecurities (of which there are many.)

We know Brian’s fantastic, obviously, but look at this scene- without even realising it, Brian’s expressing disbelief that Rory could ever get a girl like that to marry him. And Amy, being Amy, plays at being Brian’s favourite. Perfect as ever!

I can imagine similar jokey comments heading Rory’s way whenever the three were together- Brian possibly so impressed by Amy he forgot his own son had achieved a lot in life too. (We know that Brian’s never seen Rory’s nursing skills in action.) We know Brian’s comment and any previous comments he may have made about the Amy-Rory marriage were made in jest, but it’s entirely possible they ate away at Rory. What he took from them was almost certainly, “Even my own father doesn’t think I’m worthy of someone as incredible as Amy.” Which is the sort of thing that would mutate over the years, make you insecure and jealous…but more on that later.

Ponds and Parting

Talk of the Pond’s potential almost-divorce in the first episode of Series Seven has come up again. So I thought…while I obviously don’t like said spoiler, it is plausible, and here’s why…

Everything that can shake even the strongest of marriages…has happened to them. They lost a baby, under terrible circumstances. Amy is still (I assume) dealing with at least a little guilt over killing a woman in cold blood, and possibly feeling angry that the Doctor doesn’t drop by much/lied to her about his death. (Can I just drop to my knees and plead that this actually be addressed, next series?) Plus both have careers now- Amy is a model and Rory is a nurse- which probably means they don’t even see as much of each other as before.

Add all that together and it’s a recipe for disaster. But…some people really aren’t meant to be apart, no matter how bad and complicated things get, and I think the Ponds are some of those people. Unless of course it’s a dream, a vision, Dalek manipulation, a plot to foil something or other, GANGERS, TESSALECTAS…well, you know, considering the track record so far.

Also, there’ll be a fanfic about this later.

Summary: Rory’s song for Amy.

Whovengers

Fury = The Doctor: Both look after their bands of misfits, and defend the Earth.
Tony = Jack: International/intergalactic playboys willing to die for the greater good. Many times over in Jack’s case.
Steve = Martha: Underdogs who became heroes, fighting tyrants for freedom and justice.
Bruce = Donna: Both forced to embrace a personality they didn’t want. The only difference is, Donna no longer remembers what it was like to be fully her.
Natasha = Amy: Both badass redheads with pasts they tend to run from.
Clint = Rory: Soldier types who always come as a package deal with their badass redhead.
Phil = Mickey: Both The Man In Havana, both eventually drawn to Big Fucking Guns.
Maria = River: The capable second-in-command.
Thor = Rose: Both channel godlike powers (that they had to prove themselves worthy of.) Also, both blonde.
Loki = The Master: These two would get on like a house on fire…no survivors.

bowties-are—cool:

I feel really sorry for Rory sometimes.

Because it’s obvious to me that he’s kind of CUT OUT for being a father – all the way through Series Five absolutely nothing throws him. Hell, he’s even okay with the dying-and-suddenly-being-Roman thing.

And then through Series Six, he just becomes so muchmore, but he’s still really calm about everything and you can just tell he’d be a perfect father.

And then he never even gets to see his real baby daughter – he only sees her when she’s Flesh, I think. I know he grows up with her, but it isn’t the same because he didn’t know he had a daughter all that time up until Berlin.

Yet he’s STILL fazed by nothing, and he still loves River.

I don’t know, I’m just having Rory feels today.

And then I feel sorry for River for the exact same reason – she’s obviously such a daddy’s girl (I imagine she’d have been pretty close to him as Mels), but she can’t show it when he doesn’t even know who she is to the Doctor, never mind to him, and there’s always far too much going on in their lives for them to have some actual TIME with each other.

But I think Rory would have been so, so brilliant as a father and I’m really sad they haven’t had more time together.

Feels.

So. Much. SAD. :(

Remember that scene in Amy’s Choice, where he walks up to the baby’s cot and gently touches the mobile? That scene is a sucker-punch, after Season Six.
