David Starkey, who has faced mass criticism over his comments that “slavery was not genocide, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many damn Blacks”, may be stripped of his honorary Cambridge fellowship. On June 30, the historian, 75, discussed with gay right-wing pundit Darren Grimes on his YouTube channel Reasoned, whether the Black Lives Matter movement…
Tony McDade, a Black trans man, was shot and killed by what is Florida’s third fatal police shooting in two months. On Wednesday (May 27), Tony McDade was shot and killed by a white police officer in Tallahassee, north Florida. Local news, which along with the Florida Police Department initially misgendered McDade, reported that he…
So I suppose if you’ve been reading even just Twitter you’ll know about the two most-reported-on race-hate incidents that took place over the past few days. One ended in death and one thankfully did not. I’ve held off on writing anything because I’m a) white and b) not American, or have spent much time in America at all. And I really, REALLY do not want to watch the George Floyd video. I know it’s important footage but I can’t bring myself to watch it.
I know what I feel on looking at stills from it, though, which is “If the murderer got the death penalty, maybe the next racist cop would think twice. Plus it’d be hard to argue he didn’t deserve it.” And I’m VERY against the death penalty. But… this creature who is not really deserving of a name suffocated a man to death in broad daylight while people yelled at him to stop. (I read descriptions of the video.) And by all accounts he enjoyed it. And would do it again. And you know what, probably will do it again unless someone intervenes and if that means the death penalty I just… don’t care in that particular case.
Sigh. John Boyega aka Finn really sums the whole thing up.
(annnnnd he got pushback even for tweeting that because OF COURSE he did, sigh.)
So I remember when I reblogged the story about the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, I said something like, I hate knowing that there’ll be another and another just as terrible story right after. And there was.
Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical technician (EMT), was shot eight times when officers entered her apartment in Louisville on 13 March.
They were executing a search warrant as part of a drugs investigation, but no drugs were found in the property.
The lawsuit accuses the officers of wrongful death and excessive force.
It was filed by Ms Taylor’s family last month and says the officers were not looking for her or her partner – but for an unrelated suspect who was already in custody and did not live in the apartment complex.
So yeah, another death at the hands of incompetent, trigger-happy, racist police. Here’s a post I found on Reddit, obviously I have no way of knowing if it’s real, but-
It kinda sums everything up pretty well. She was clearly worth a trillion of any of those cops, is what I feel on reading that. Twenty-six years old! Working with adults with brain injuiries, which is one of the hardest jobs anyone can do! And murdered by people who probably (inevitably) won’t even face much justice.
There is something seriously wrong in this country. No, it isn’t only Donald Trump, though he is a sign, a manifestation of the disease that is destroying this nation. No, the disease isn’t the coronavirus, though perhaps it has brought the other, deeper disease into the public arena. The disease is … what? It has many names, but they all point to one thing just as the saying goes that “all roads lead to Rome”. And that one thing is blind hatred.
I’ve posted twice in the past week about the two white men who brutally murdered a young black man guilty only of being outdoors jogging. The men, father and son, chased him down in their pickup truck and shot him to death.
The murder went unannounced for more than two months, then finally once it became public knowledge, the hue and cry was such that the two were arrested. Most of us, I hope, were appalled by what happened to Ahmaud Arbery and hope the two killers will spend the rest of their lives paying for their actions. However, there is a group that is growing in numbers, who seem to see the killers as ‘heroes’, want to put them on a pedestal and give them kudos.
It began when a group previously called “Christians Against Google” changed their name to “Justice for Gregory and Travis Michael”, the two killers. In the “About” section of their Facebook page, they claim …
“These 2 God-fearing men were only trying to protect their neighborhood. This area has had a string of break-ins and this man fit the description and did not comply with simple commands. Our hearts go out to the McMichael family in their time of need. Amen.”
By “fit the description”, they mean that he was black. If that doesn’t make your blood boil, then I don’t know what will. Worse yet … you may think this group is comprised of only a few “good ol’ boys”, southern whites who haven’t yet realized that this is the 21st century and that skin colour is not a basis for judgment or discrimination. But the fact is that at last count, there were reportedly some 104,000 people signed on for this hateful group.
Pissed. Angry. Distraught. Hopeless. Any of these words describe your feelings these days? Personally, I’ve had them all in the last 24 hours. And then I saw a video of a young African-American male gunned down and slaughtered by a couple of yahoo vigilante white dudes. My head exploded.
Another one murdered—this time apparently for having the nerve to jog down the street in the middle of the day. The nerve of this young man, right? How dare he run while black, in a white neighborhood? Doesn’t he know his place?
For those of you wondering what the story is, perhaps you haven’t seen the video yet. Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man, is seen being chased by two white men in a pickup truck outside the city of Brunswick, Georgia. A confrontation occurs between the younger white man and Arbery, shots were fired, and Arbery is seen falling to…
I know, I don’t live in America. But based on the information I get I thoroughly believe US police should not have guns. They should have full body armour to protect them from being killed, that’s only fair, but no guns. A whole populace is living in fear of the people meant to protect them. It’s insanity.
“I’m shaken. I’m mad. I’m upset. And I feel it’s partly my fault,” Mr Smith told the Star Telegram newspaper about requesting the welfare check. “If I had never dialled the police department, she’d still be alive.”
British police don’t carry guns and yet they rarely get killed on the job. It does happen sometimes but it’s rare. (Yes, I know, I know, generally British criminals don’t have guns either. But the average British police officer does face knives, physical attacks etc on a regular basis and yet they manage okay without firearms. See this, which happened two days ago.)
I’m serious: take the fucking guns away. I can offer absolutely nothing about how to best solve the racism problem, I don’t know anywhere near enough (beyond ‘for the love of god, fire any police officer who makes racist comments, fire them straight away, what is wrong with you?!’) but in the meantime remove firearms from US cops. They’ve proved constantly, over and over again, that they don’t deserve them.
This is not well written. I’m angry. That poor woman had her whole life ahead of her and now it’s gone, all because of some jumpy racist asshole.
