ableism

bitterautistic:

Ableism is alive and real despite people claiming to be more aware and understanding. In day to day conversations, activities, and public places ableism is everywhere and unavoidable. Whether it’s a teacher sighing loudly every time an autistic student asks for clarification, the girl sitting next to you complaining about a “special needs” student in her other class, or the lack of things like elevators and ramps, ableism is everywhere. While some instances and occurrences are more subtle than others ableism is apparent and ingrained in society negatively affecting so many disabled people especially those who are further marginalized.

Environments where disability is treated as a bad thing and accommodations are a waste of time and money are not safe and are in no means progressive. Preaching disability positivity and acceptance but not following up with matching attitudes and actions is pointless and flat out offensive. Disability exists and isn’t going anywhere. Instead of ignoring people’s needs and making things inaccessible we need people to start actually making changes beyond pseudo acceptance. Positivity let alone the fake positivity people spew in order look better isn’t going to build ramps, elevators, or advocate for disabled children. Positivity is important but it isn’t going to change people’s ableist assumptions and mindsets if the abled/neurotypical people preaching it aren’t following through with matching actions.

also DUDES, MY DUDES

please stop with the “Making an IDIOT Disney’s first gay character is SO OFFENSIVE!” It’s obviously not being said in relation to the character being a (minor) villain but in relation to him being of perceived low intelligence, and – having a low IQ isn’t a bad thing, guys, you know this.

They are not saying this about a character with low intelligence, they are saying this about a character that is called The Fool who is designed for the audience to look down on for his complete lack of dignity. Their choice of words may be ableist, but you must appreciate this is an archetype in storytelling.

I know that/this post sounds like I’m being terribly holier-than-thou, but – considering the archetypal idea of the fool is also rooted in ableism (hell, in a way, a grown person behaving with a lack of dignity and this being bad, even that has roots in ableism I think…)

…..people could probably have handled it better. Just that aspect of it. They were awfully quick to bring up the word ‘idiot’ and…. there’s just this feeling I get, people are so keen to denounce the concept of intelligence and how it’s presented, yet when a wider issue of representation comes up it’s always the first thing to be used as a battering ram. How dare you associate X with a lack of intelligence? You know…. ? It seems to happen so much these days.

Anyway fangoriousfae also had some good thoughts

So this happened …

Take this as your daily reminder to STOP LEAVING DISABLED & CHRONICALLY ILL PEOPLE OUT OF YOUR ACTIVISM. Republicans are literally arguing that we are lost causes who deserve to DIE rather than have access to the healthcare & medication that keeps us alive

Like I hate that manic pixie dream girl is like…. It can be legit feminist critique on a good day but honestly it’s just ableist bs most of the time??

This is SO REAL like 90% of ~Feminist Media Analysis has this problem.

interesting only tenuously related bit of trivia- Zooey Deschanel has ADHD. I read that yesterday fact fans

I have been writing on how ableist feminist posts on MPDGs tend to be since at least April now. Especially when the entire criticism or joke is “this person cannot function like a ‘normal’ adult.”

I’m happy to see other people are noticing this as well.

As a person with adhd I was very happy to see the mpdg as an accepted way to be …. basically myself. To not surpress my symptoms, but to see them as loveable.
As a feminist I want to distinguish between mpdgs as people (very okay!) and the way they tend to be portrayed as only a thing to further the development of a male character (not good!).

Anyone remember that video about an inpatient facility for MPDGs where the whole punchline was the R-word?

Instead of MPDG being a criticism of men for not seeing that women are always whole people with our own needs and agendas, even when we’re quirky or emotionally intuitive?
