today in “google AI is fucking useless because it hallucinates things that never happened”, i bought a couple CVS thermometers that have both been acting up, tried to search if there had been a problem with the whole product line:
there is no record of this product recall. it did not happen. the date “feb 8 2024” is the date someone listed a thermometer for sale on ebay.
Google’s trying to save you the time spent clicking on a site full of AI-generated SEO garbage by presenting the AI-generated garbage right up front! Such efficiency.
I was under the impression that we did know why: AI isn’t actually a brain and can’t actually think or understand information, so it has no concept of something being true or not, or what markers indicate truth or falsity, or how to synthesize information. It’s putting a bunch of words in a jar, shaking the jar, and then dumping it out, and acting like that means the jar knows how to talk.
Like, in this case, OP asked for information about a recall. The AI knows that, throughout the entire internet, the word “recall” usually is surrounded by information like a date or a number, so it gives you a date and a number. It doesn’t know what a date is or what it’s for or what it means. (It also apparently doesn’t know the difference between “recall” as in “removing a dangerous product from the shelves” and “recall” as in “remembering,” since it smooshes the two together)
what’s that thing again that you can put into ublock that blocks all the ai results from google?
[ID mostly by @homunculusalphonse : A photo of the Google search results for the phrase “cvs thermometers recall”: “On February 8, 2024, CVS Health recalled its rigid tip digital thermometer with memory recall and fever alarm. The thermometers have a memory recall feature that stores the previous temperature. The item number for the recall is 375235991489.” Both the links attached to this text are from eBay and Pinterest. This module does say “AI overviews are experimental”, in much smaller font. /End ID]
The uBlockOrigin AI blocklist above is super helpful y’all.
This is disgusting it’s ableist as fuck and bro. ITS LITERALLY CALLED AN EMERGENCY EXIT YOU NEED IT TO BE FAST
15 seconds is too long in a life-threatening situation. I’m remembering the shooting that occurred on the N train (either last year or 2022?)—if something like that happened in the station itself, 15 seconds is enough time to end a lot of lives. People might not be as lucky as they were on the N. NYC is safer than a lot of non-New Yorkers may think, but that doesn’t mean it can’t ever happen. Again.
That’s not the only example, there’s any number of things that could happen where 15 seconds will make a difference in who lives or dies. This is so dangerous and honestly it feels like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Not to one-up prev who has made many good points but I would go a little further and say that it’s social murder waiting to happen.
The Hollyweed guy is looking at double the jail time that Brock Turner got.
“Hollyweed” didn’t hurt anyone, there is not lasting damage to the sign, all that needs to be done to reverse the prank is to take down four signs. After that, it’s like it never even happened.
Brock Turner, on the other hand, violently assaulted and violated an unconcious woman. That trauma will be with her, possibly for the rest of her life. There is no reversing that. It can never be undone. It will never be as if it never happened.
I guess landmarks are just more important than women’s bodies.
I hate him with every fibre of my being. Indian athletes do not have the privilege of high tech equipment and they are not given funding or support the way athletes in the west do (unless they’re cricketers). Sakshi Malik is the daughter of a bus conductor and had to literally fight her way to the top because she faced opposition from people in her village for taking up sports because she was a girl. She has a 9 to 5 job to support herself when most athletes dedicate their lives to their sport. PV Sindhu had to travel 56 kilometres every day to practice her badminton. And for the first time in my life i saw this country care about something that wasn’t cricket, it was so heartwarming to see everyone cheer on these two girls and be proud of them for their bronze and silver medals. And Piers Morgan’s response to someone sharing India’s celebrations with him is that it is ‘embarrassing’? How can someone be so vile.
Since when was being the 2nd or 3rd best in the world considered “losing”? Piers Morgan should know what an accomplishment that is considering there’s only like 2 or 3 people in this world worse than him. If he tries a little harder, he could easily dethrone Trump and take the gold.
Baltimore Country Police Fatally Shoot a Black Woman and Injure Her 5-Year-Old Child.
23-years-old Korryn Gaines has been shot by Baltimore County police on Monday. Her 5-year-old son was shot in a limb and taken to the hospital. The boy is expected to survive.
Three officers went to Gaines’ apartment in Randallstown at approximately 9:20AM to serve arrest on her and a man for traffic violations.
All the videos Gaines shot before she was shot and all her media are being deleted!
Can anyone tell me since when a 5-year-old child is a threat?!
As of Thursday morning, at least 834 people had been shot and killed by American police officers so far this year.
Six-year-old Jeremy David Mardis is the youngest among them.
The autistic first-grader was sitting in the front passenger seat of a car being driven by his father, Chris Few, in Marksville, La., when city marshals “allegedly” attempted to serve the man a warrant about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night. But when checked with the County Clerks office, no warrant could be found in the database.
Police claim Few fled, eventually turning down a dead-end street. And that Few then attempted to back his vehicle out, striking officers’ cruisers, prompting an exchange of gunfire between the officers and driver that left him hospitalized and his son dead.
However, An official briefed on the shooting said that Few was unarmed when two officers opened fire, shooting between 13 and 18 bullets combined. Five of the officers’ bullets pierced Jeremy’s body, Mayeux said, with the two fatal shots hitting him in the head and chest. That official said it is unclear if the shooting was captured on camera.
After the officers names were released, It didn’t take long for local press to uncover extensive rap sheets for both officers:
Derrick Stafford, the officer indicted for rape, also has five pending civil suits against him for various complaints of excessive force, including breaking the arm of a 14-year-old girl on a school bus as well as assaulting and pepper-spraying a 15-year-old boy at a Fourth of July celebration.
Norris Greenhouse Jr., the other officer implicated in the murder of 6-year-old Jeremy Mardis, is named in several of the same suits for acting in tandem with Stafford.
Louisiana State Police announced on Wednesday that they had launched an investigation into the incident at the request of the Marksville Police Department.
In the USA, it’s 100x cheaper to take an Uber to the hospital instead of an ambulance.
I don’t know if this is true or.. Like, having to pay for an ambulance that is taking you to the hospital? That doesn’t make any sense. What kind of distopian world is that?
It costs thousands of dollars to ride in an ambulance
In America some people with chronic health conditions like epilepsy literally have to wear medical IDs that say “don’t call an ambulance/911”. Some well-meaning person calling an ambulance for you will turn into a thousand (or couple thousand) dollars that YOU are on the hook for, even though you didn’t make the call. So, PSA: if you see someone having a seizure, look for a medical ID! You should only call an ambulance if: the person is elderly, pregnant, or the seizure lasts more than 4 minutes. Otherwise, wait for the seizure to pass, then ask the person if they want an ambulance when they regain consciousness.
wtf
Oh my god what.
Here in Quebec, if you call an ambulance for something they deem non-emergency, you get a bill later for like $180. But if it’s anything like a loss of consciousness, chest pains, labour, whatever, or if you’re in a public place and a a well-meaning samaritan calls 911, it’s paid for by the government.
Seriously, everything about healthcare in the US makes me want to cry.
A couple times a good friend of mine who lived close by called me in the middle of the night for a ride to the hospital because she was super sick but couldn’t drive herself and couldn’t afford the charge for an ambulance. I really do think America wants the poor to die.
to those who aren’t aware – david owen Russell’s recent films are joy, american hustle, and silver linings playbook and I’m stunned at how “"feminists”“/”“artists”“ jennifer lawrence & bradley cooper can keep working with him when amy adams claimed russell made her cry “almost every day” on set
I had no idea that director was like that. This is so freaking horrible.
