ableism

I need to be writing my submission for the LHP right now. Now that I got myself off to a good start on a topic I can actually get into. Rather than trying to recombine old tumblr posts creatively.

But I have to…

This makes for hard reading, but I think you should look at it. Because lots of people geniunely do hate the disabled, and yet such behaviour is accepted. And laughed along with! I made a post about this not long ago, mentioning this case that happened near me, where a mother killed herself and her disabled daughter after years of abuse from neighbours. There was a lot of talk about it, but not many people mentioned that the daughter had no choice in the matter at all, and would probably have, you know, preferred not to die.

It isn’t right and it’s terrifying, but…well, before long the evidence starts to speak for itself. The world doesn’t like the disabled. They really don’t. And that’s me (sort of) and half my loved ones right there…

My strong dislike for Frankie Boyle

I know it’s old news, but hearing that the Wales Millenium Center has refused to book Frankie Boyle made me think of it again.

For those who don’t know, back in 2010 the Opinionated, Honest And Controversial ™ comedian Frankie Boyle made various jokes about Harvey Price, Katie ‘Jordan’ Price’s disabled son. To be exact, he said “Jordan and Peter Andre are still fighting each other over custody of Harvey – eventually one of them will lose and have to keep him.” and “I have a theory about the reason Jordan married a cage fighter – she needed a man strong enough to stop Harvey from fucking her.” Mmmm. Harvey Price is eight years old, by the way.

In what universe is it acceptable for an adult male to outright bully a small child? This one, apparently. It’s not just that, either, ableism seems to be all over British comedy these days. Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, they’re all at it, and the disabled are seen as fair game. Boyle did this. Gervais did this.

THIS IS THE SAME FUCKING MENTALITY that drove Fiona Pilkington to kill herself and her disabled daughter after years of harassment. It is stupid and wrong and I loathe it- I loathe Frankie Boyle and his ilk. A proper, deep, nasty loathing that I don’t like- but if he is determined to hurt people, I want to hurt him, too.

So good on the Millenium Center for fighting back. Basically.

Words

The word ‘derp’…where did it come from? I looked and the Internet told me (thank you Internet) that it came from South Park, but as far as I can tell it’s considered a very ableist word? I don’t use it, I don’t like it, but I did wonder where it originated.

The word ‘dumb’…When I was little, my mum told me not to use that word as an insult, but being little I ignored her, and I didn’t realise til I was an adult that it was offensive. I’ve stopped using it now, but do other people see it as offensive? Because I’ve seen people who are otherwise anti-discrimination use it, and although I’ve never seen anyone defend their use of it exactly I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone just figured it was too late to stop it being used offensively, like when ‘spastic’ was stolen as a word and The Spastics Society had to change its name. (See here.)

The word ‘retard’…I’m going to point you to The R Word.
