You know…sometimes I get the feeling the series works better if you watch it from Jackie and Mickey’s POV rather than Rose’s. Overall, I mean. Because throughout both series, they change for the better and get a happy ending. Jackie’s husband comes back from the dead, almost, and saves her daughter- and then she gets a lovely house*, a complete family, and a new baby. Everything she’s ever wanted, just about. And Mickey gets to be a hero, and gains Jake and a gang of rebels, and his grandmother back and then Rose and Jackie too. Awesome for the both of them.

And then there’s Rose, and to be honest, I really don’t know what to make of her last scenes. About the ‘I’m never gonna leave you’ thing- yes, it was her decision, yes, she deserves to be able to make her own decisions- but Jackie would stay behind in Pete’s universe for her entire life and she’d never know if Rose was alive or dead or happy or what- her daughter would be as good as dead. She’d be unhappy for the rest of her life, and Rose could have prevented it- but she loves the Doctor and she wanted to stay with him, and she was right when she said everyone leaves home in the end. But…I don’t know. I really don’t know. And it would have been one seriously depressing tragedy if Rose had actually died.

Or, if she’d been able to carry on with the Doctor and eventually, say, he regenerated- but this time into someone she didn’t like. Or the Time Lords came back and he had to leave her for them, or something. Where we she go then? Nowhere, because she’d seperated herself from everybody. And she’d have had to leave the Doctor someday.

Everyone leaves home in the end.

So, the ending. I don’t know. What I really wanted was for her to realise that she had to grow up. Like Sarah Jane did, walking away. I wanted her to realise that the life she’s living is impossible, and that she can make a difference on Earth, or something- but she didn’t. There’s still hope that she’ll learn, on alt-earth, that she was lucky- but we’ll probably not see it. Unless she shows up again. Which I hope she does.

Sigh.

It depends which way you look at it?

Anyway. What do you think Jackie and Pete will call their new baby?

*I love the Tyler’s new house. I want to live there. Except not in the alt-verse (too many zeppelins).

Doctor Who: Doomsday

Typing this while watching Confidential:

When Rose was saved from the void by Pete, I applauded. Applauded madly and my hands still hurt. It felt so right, you know? So perfect.

I also cried, nearly, at the Last Goodbye scene. Honestly, I can’t find anything to say about that, because I know others will have done it better.

And I also admit that when Rose said ‘I’m never gonna leave you.’, even if it meant never seeing her mother again, I shouted ‘YOU IDIOT’ at the screen. Sigh. I also shouted ‘SHE HAS ABANDONED HER MOTHER TO A LIFE OF DESPAIR!’ which sounds hilarious, but there’s probably a grain of truth of it, because there would be a mother who could never see her daughter again…and if that’s not a tragedy, what is?

I grinned widly at pregnant!Jackie. Oh, I’m so so glad she didn’t die. She deserved her happy ending.

Also loved the Jackie/Pete reunion, and the way their hug mirrored the Rose/Doctor hug from The Satan Pit.

Mickey was awesome. Didn’t have much to do, but still was awesome. Leading on to…

The Doctor kissed him! Ha! I predict that will be on a thousand icons by the end of today, and possibly mine as well.

You know…I wonder what will become of Mickey and Rose’s relationship. I imagine it’ll settle into merely a good friendship, but…maybe it’ll evolve into something else, on the grounds that a) she’s already had a relationship with him and b) he’s a time traveller now, just like her.

One last thing? I loved that Rose was wearing a leather jacket at the end. Sigh.

I kind of do hope she comes back for one episode, somehow, in a few series’ time. Maybe the TARDIS does another crash-landing on alt-Earth, and the Doctor immediately goes to find Rose, causing much angst for Martha Jones.

Oh, there’s so much fanfic I want to write. I’ll see y’all later.

Lesser Angels- world’s first Mickey/Reinette fic

Title: Lesser Angels
Author: sarah531
Rating: PG13, probably
Characters: Mickey, Reinette, Ten, Rose, Jackie
Pairing: Mickey/Reinette
Summary: Reinette clutched his hand, held it tightly.
“The Doctor is worth the monsters,” she said, and it sounded like a epitaph.

Author’s note: I suppose if you squint, you can see a hint of Mickey/Reinette/Ten/Rose. Whoa. But for all intents and purposes, let’s call it Mickey/Reinette. ;)

Doctor Who: The Age Of Steel

In bullet-point format, for bullet-point format is good.

-I utterly refuse to believe that Mickey won’t be coming back again ever. There’s been various reports and stuff on the spoiler forums at OG…a great percentage of them probably aren’t true, but I bet at least one of them is.

-I really like Jake, and figure Mickey/Jake is probably inevitable, even if it doesn’t last long

-Mrs Moore/Angela Price was good too. Pity she had to die.

-This was probably the most disturbing thing I’ve seen on pre-watershed TV. (did I say that last week, too?) I think it was that shot of someone walking right into the ovens that did it this time.

-Did I mention I refuse to believe Mickey won’t be back? Heck, if Jack gets Torchwood, give Mickey and Jake their own series too!

-‘Rose, I’m coming to get you.’ is now offically my favourite line in series 2. Parallels, don’tcha know. I love Mickey being a Doctor figure in his own right.

There Is No Christmas On Mars has been jossed ever so slightly. Teh woes. I’m gonna write another one of those, though, because a) Trisha is virtually my self-insert and b) it’s all the Mickey-as-someone’s-Doctor-figure idea again anyway, yo.

-Oh, and…there is one other reason I didn’t want Mickey to stay in the alt-verse: it’s because of Jackie! She’s got no-one now. *sighs* I honestly did very nearly ship those two.

-I loved that Pete just walked away at the end. And as I again might have said before, I bet any money that the conclusion to Rose’s story will be her having to choose between her father and the Doctor.

-HE’LL BE BACK DANGNABBIT.

Fandom stuff

Not, of course, that this journal ever has anything but fandom stuff in it. :) Although, just to break the trend- I had my first exam today. ICT. I’m glad it’s out of the way and done with, that’s all I can say. XD

More thoughts on Rise of the Cybermen, and Doctor Who in general-

-Mickey’s pretty much become the Neville Longbottom of DW fandom, hasn’t he? Right down to the living-with-his-gran part. (I suppose that makes Rose Harry? Heh.) You know- the sort of secondary hero who is actually a hero in his own right. *suddenly has urge to do DW/HP crossover*

-Has anyone noticed a minor increase of people singing In The Jungle recently? ‘Cos I have. And it SCARES ME TO PIECES, because that scene is the freakiest thing I’ve ever seen on pre-watershed TV. (So much for humans never killing humans, eh, RTD? ;) )

-Five episodes and one very long fanfic in and I’m still not quite sure what to make of Rose this series. I mean…it’s like her character evolution has been, from the very beginning: ‘Teenage girl’ –> ‘Teenage girl WITH POWER’. Oh, I dunno. But her character arc has the potential to be incredibly interesting, all the same. (Personally, I have a suspicion she’ll be faced with An Ultimate Choice- the Doctor or her father. I claim gloating rights if this happens. ;) )

-A wallpaper wot I made for my fic series Turn Of The Earth, That Which I Talk About Too Much. I’m rather amazed by how well this came out, as it started off looking slightly crap.

On to Star Wars fandom, which I miss terribly:

-I reeeeally want to make an Anakin/Padme fanmix, but I only have two songs so far. One of them is U2’s City Of Blinding Lights, which has always been my A/P song for some reason.

-I wish I could write at least one Star Wars fic without giving up halfway through. In my head since ROTS: a genfic featuring Obi-Wan and Beru; a weird AU Anakin and Obi-Wan thing; and a very weird barely-even-a-fanfic thing about a certain controversial scene from AOTC.

-Dude, on Saturday it’ll be one year since ROTS. I might go see The Da Vinci Code (have moviemakers now decided that May 19th is a lucky date to release a blockbuster? ;) ) but I think after that I shall watch ROTS. Because I love it so. *uses ROTS icon*

Doctor Who: Rise of the Cybermen

Oh my god, Mickey. This is going to be his couple of episodes, you can tell…and we learned so much about him and my heart just bloody broke.

So *that’s* where it all stems from…all the insistance that he’s probably useless, all the fake self-confidence we saw in Rose and all the rest. His gran brought him up, and Mickey didn’t fix the carpet and she tripped and broke her neck. Blimey.

And his mother ‘couldn’t cope’- what did Rose mean by that? We came to her in mid-sentence, so there could have been anything there. Maybe she couldn’t cope because she never wanted a kid, or she couldn’t cope because Mickey had a brother or sister who died, or something. And his Dad left (which, I am slightly proud to say, is one detail in my fanfics I got right, ha) and then his gran died. And in the parallel ‘verse she’s alive, so Mickey’s essentially facing the same choice Rose is- if you found a world where your dead loved ones still lived, what would you do?

And his dad was called Jackson Smith and worked in a key shop. *notes that down for future fic*

Slight spoilers/speculation for future episodes now: scroll down to read:

-There’s been lots of talk (although, I think, nothing concrete) about Mickey choosing to stay on alt-Earth, and although I hated the idea first (what about Jackie? The real Jackie?) I can buy it now. Although what I’d love the most would be Mickey going back to the estate and living with Jackie (I’m not what you’d call a shipper, but I love the relationship between those two) or Mickey opting to stay for a bit and asking the Doctor to pick him up later. Although it doesn’t look like that’s possible. Sigh.

Real spoiler now, but if you were alright reading the above you’ll probably be alright reading this too: Noel Clarke’s in episodes 12 and 13 too, according to OG. So at least no matter what happens, it won’t be quite the end. Whew.

Oh, and the Cybermen? They were pretty good too. ;)

Doctor Who: The Girl In The Fireplace

Hmmm…I have mixed feelings about this one.

The good:

-Mickey- of course. ‘Mickey Smith, meet the universe. See anything you like?’ I love him and his normality and saying dumb things. ‘It looks so realistic!’ Now if only he had had more to do…but I suspect that comes along next week.

-Rose being nice. As in…not being jealous, not being bitchy…being actually concerned about Reinette, and then about the Doctor at the end. I love this Rose, and hope she stays.

Maybe it was School Reunion that brought this on? She knows there’ll always be others, and while he may love her, he loves them too?

-Oh, and I love that Madame du Pompadour has a first name we can use for her now.

-Drunk Doctor.

The bad:

So…he jumped through the mirror and trapped Rose and Mickey on the other side, and himself on Reinette’s side. I do think the two of them probably could have got back without him…there must be some ‘Doctor has done something stupid’ emergency program in there somewhere. But still. And Rose probably knew, somehow, that he’d be coming back, and he did, but all the same he didn’t know he’d be coming back…he essentially abandoned her in a spur-of-the-moment decision. Oh please, RTD, or whoever’s writing the next lot of episodes, let this have consequences. Did Rose even know that by jumping through the mirror he was leaving her – did she know that once he did that the portal would close, or did she assume he’d be able to get back anyway? Will she one day go back and find Sarah Jane and say ‘He abandoned me once, too?’

…hold it there! I want to write that.

So, yes, writers, let this have consequences! Like what you didn’t do with the whole Adam thing. Please please please? Then it wouldn’t bug me nearly so much.

I do think they’re setting things up for Rose’s departure, now. She may love him, and he may love her, but he’s an alien. I bet by next week, he’ll have forgotten Reinette as well.

Off the subject of that episode: I miss Jackie. I adore Jackie- the thing I love about this series is how it contrasts the extraodinary with the ordinary. Rose may be off meeting dead French people and getting captured by monsters and welding big space guns, but Jackie’s got to tidy the flat and pay the electricity bill and stuff. That’s why I love the episodes set on the Powell Estate so much…I can’t quite explain. I hope she’s back next week, anyway.

Was at a party a few hours ago; got talking about Doctor Who. People liked it, yay.

One very random thing: Y’see this picture-

mickeycafe

-a screencap (from here) of last night’s DW episode? That’s Mickey in the cybercafe, and there’s a random girl next to him, and random girl looks like Trisha from Turn of the Earth- brown curly hair and everything. Duuuuude.

(I really will stop randomly bringing this stuff up eventually, I swear. It can’t be normal to keep going on about a fic series months after it finished.)

EDIT: I say this now, of course, but it goes up on ff.net soon, soon as I get off my arse.

EDIT MANY HOURS LATER: People are saying it’s Sarah in the picture, and it probably is, but that doesn’t fit with the rest of episode. Although it would make hugely interesting fanfic. *ponders writing Mickey/Sarah Jane -Mr and Mrs Smith. Heh.*
