James Gunn keeps reiterating that the Awesome Mixes 1 and 2 are Meredith “communicating” with Peter even after his death, and I really love that. I love how in certain moments, Meredith’s song choices frame her as a sort of narrator or Greek Chorus from beyond the grave. And also I keep looking at the actual lyrics of those songs, and…
…so many of them are about men taking advantage of women, or treating them badly. Brandy is obviously the centerpiece here, but loads of the others also sound like men like Ego would nod approvingly along with them-
Fooled Around And Fell In Love perfectly sums up the Meredith/Ego relationship:
I must have been through about a million girls I’d love ‘em then I’d leave ’em alone I didn’t care how much they cried, no sir Their tears left me cold as a stone But then I fooled around and fell in love
(…and the ‘a million’ is absolutely literal in this case…)
I’m Not In Love sounds almost like what Ego, intent on his planet-destroying mission, must have been thinking after he met Meredith:
I like to see you But then again That doesn’t mean you mean that much to me
Wham Bam Shang-a-Lang could almost be Ego justifying leaving Meredith to himself:
But careful now don’t get caught in your dreams
Look out baby this is not what it seems
(No kidding)
Come A Little Bit Closer, that fabulous murdersong, is about a woman who ‘belongs’ to an apparently dangerous man:
In a little café just the other side of the border She was just sitting there givin’ me looks that made my mouth water So I started walking her way She belonged to bad man, José
Escape (The Pina Colada Song) is about a man cheating on his wife (although granted she was cheating on him too)
I was tired of my lady, we’d been together too long Like a worn out recording of a favorite song
Brandy, well, the whole of GOTG2 deconstructs Brandy, but I like this lyric:
Brandy wears a braided chain Made of finest silver from the North of Spain A locket that bears the name Of the man that Brandy loves
Because it ties in so well to this bit from The Chain:
And if you don’t love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain
Speaking of The Chain, I know you can’t hear this bit in the actual movie, but it sounds just like Meredith condemning and raging at her ex-lover, the man who killed her:
Running in the shadows Damn your love, damn your lies
…Of course, when Meredith was making the Awesome Mixes, she didn’t know what Ego really was. She dies thinking he’ll come back for Peter and everything will be fine. But you sort of wonder… maybe somewhere really deep down, she suspected something wasn’t right. Maybe her communications were, of sorts, a warning.
honestly……… no more clara references……… that’s enough……………
And he could have literally reminisced about the fact that he did that to donna. it hurt him a lot a you know. Just for one second he realised how wiping Bill’s memories would affect him – can you imagine him having to go through all that again? I swear to shit when Bill told him to think about how he would feel, he literally thought about this exchange
“Donna I was just going”
“Yeah. see ya.”
i mean knowing moffat, he simply refuses make references to things that he didn’t create, so
but honestly that would’ve been a great Donna flashback.
Bill keeps begging him to not wipe her memory, and all of a sudden we flash to black and white, back to that moment between Donna and Ten, with no audio other than Bill’s pleads as the scene of Donna’s own pleads plays out.
we flash back to our current moment, and the Doctor quickly pulls his hands back. “get out”, he says quietly, trying not to let it known that his voice is quavering.
to be fair, the line was “imagine how you’d feel if someone did this to you”, as in if you had your memory wiped, so honestly clara’s theme did fit better than donna’s moment
im also convinced that for him to have considered wiping bill’s memory in the first place he had to have been blocking donna or something
actually, it doesn’t fit the situation better.
if my memory serves correct, twelves memory wipe was consensual, while donna’s was not. twelve wanted to wipe bill’s memory, and she begged him not to, much like how donna begged the doctor not to do the same.
and even when she says, “imagine how you’d feel if someone did this to you”, he CAN’T remember his own memory wipe, he DOESN’T remember it. so that moment was just to tug at the heartstrings of the viewers, and he doesn’t have the memory of clara and his own memory wipe in order to use that experience in order to decide not to wipe her memory. it JUST BARELY makes sense, if that moment truly makes sense at all.
it would have made much more sense if bill had continued to beg him to not wipe her memory, and the doctor had remembered how donna had begged the same, and how badly wiping her memory hurt him, which would make him decide against wiping bill’s memory.
so it’s an example of the situation not truly fitting, moffat refusing to callback to anything that isn’t 100% of his creation and/or design, and moffat not really making any sense.
12 does remember that his memory was wiped.
When something goes missing, you can always recreate it by the hole it left. I know her name was Clara. I know we travelled together. I know that there was an Ice Warrior on a submarine and a mummy on the Orient Express. I know we sat together in the Cloisters and she told me something very important, but I have no idea what she said. Or what she looked like. Or how she talked. Or laughed. There’s nothing there. Just nothing.
He knows what it feels like to be missing something.
Whereas if he’d been comparing the situation to Journey’s End, he would’ve wiped her mind anyway then found some rain to feel sorry for himself in.
“Moffat refuses to reference things he didn’t create” is a really fucking weird thing to say about an episode that prominently features a photograph of Susan
I’d say it’s not even a fucking weird thing to say. I’d just go all in and say it’s fucking idiotic.
look he knows his memory was wiped but he doesn’t remember it
re: clara references: i really just did not like her as a companion but the ghost of rose did linger for a really long time so it’s not unprecedented … i do agree donna would have been the better reference there though and like i don’t fucking know why after donna the doctor who force mind wipe someone so i’m blaming moffat
and for the record moffat does entirely ignore cannon his doesn’t create. even cannon he does create lmao okay like susan is there fucking sure because she’s not new who honestly catch him references anything from new who he didn’t create ever? no. besides, he wasn’t the one that brought sarah jane back. moffat has his head so far up his own ass and that sentence is true as shit not only does he not reference things he doens’t create he borderline refuses to admit they even happened or held any source of narrative importance (an example here, if we are being petty, could be the doctor on mind wiping and donna) and sometimes just writes them as though they didn’t happen (literally countless examples)
References from specifically RTD’s Doctor Who that featured in Moffat’s series (With images and gifs this time, as I have them with me and I’m bored)-
Holograms of all the past Doctors, including Nine and Ten, in The Eleventh Hour:
Magpie Electricals seen in The Beast Below:
Nine and Ten (and Rose too, apparently, though I haven’t got a shot of her) seen (briefly) in flashback in The Lodger:
A ton of past villains, including RTD’s Judoon, in The Pandorica Opens:
RTD-era TARDIS featured very prominently in The Doctor’s Wife:
Holograms of Rose, Martha and Donna in Let’s Kill Hitler, there to give the Doctor guilt and remind him what he’s capable of doing to his companions:
Rose and Jack both mentioned in The Wedding of River Song as reasons the Doctor doesn’t want to die:
(who made those original gifs?)
Ten, RTD’s creation, written by Moffat in Day of the Doctor. Keeps his last words “I don’t want to go” as the last words ever said by him on screen:
A wall of past companions and friends, including some pretty obscure RTD-era ones like Erina Magambo:
The relationship between the Doctor and Elizabeth I, something RTD created back in “The Shakespeare Code” and Moffat carried on (now we know why she hated him so much in TSC. He never went back for her!)
Clara views some past companions in a Moffat-written minisode:
The references to where the Twelfth Doctor got his face:
Reference to Rose and Martha in Before the Flood:
Flashback to Donna in The Girl Who Died, inspiring the Doctor to save Ashildr (this was not a small part of the episode):
(You want a Donna reference that works really well? There it is. After thinking of her, he saves another woman to make himself feel better, dooming her to a life she doesn’t want. He never learns.)
Reference to Jack Harkness (co-created by RTD with Moffat himself, but still) in The Girl Who Died:
And finally we’re due for the return of John Simm’s Master, as seen in the trailer:
Soo… there’s that. (Sorry for the long post). But one other thing I haven’t seen mentioned? Doctor Who is for children. I bring this up a lot because everyone constantly forgets it. The audience Moffat has been writing for for the past couple of years were not actually alive yet when “Rose” aired. They probably have, at best, a passing familiarity with Donna. To them, Nine is just another Doctor. Rose is just a random pretty lady with sparkly eyes.
That all these references to RTD’s era are in there anyway says rather a lot I think.
It’s here! The official Thunderbirds Are Go: Season 2 trailer.
Catch the new season this October on ITV and CITV.
wait i’m sorry did i see an ACTUAL LIVE EFFECTS SHOT IN THERE TOWARDS THE END
I think all the Thunderbirds (as in, the machines) are live models now, and all the explosions and scenery etc are real? It’s just the characters that’re CGI as far as I know…
huh. alright.
may give this a watch
Here’s some behind-the-scenes shots to swing ya! Weta Workshop are awesome
Paris-based artist Dorota Pankowskawas inspired by the twitter logo construction, which was made from 13 circles. She challenged herself to create figures of 13 animals with the geometric shape.
Pankowska confesses: “Only 13 circles? I doubt most of the animals will even be recognizable…” but surprisingly, I was pretty happy with what turned out. Sometimes I was even happy before I hit 13 circles, and I would “cheat” a little by adding the remaining circles on a sharp corner to simply round it out a little, instead of being forced to change the shape of the animal. But hey. :)
So you guys have probably known, that I mention the movie, “Star Wars”, many times on my posts.
That was used to just to mention that name for comparison and to tell you guys how much I love that movie.
So I started to think about ideas for my next few posts, and this one came to mind.
So I thought of making this post, because I love the talented guy that I’m gonna talk about, and spread the word as to why he’s very influential.
So today, here are reasons why George Lucas is one of the most influential people of all time!!!
1. He Created “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars”.
Yes, this is the most obvious.
This guy
created “Star Wars”
and “Indiana Jones”.
When it comes to these movies, you would probably here about George Lucas, who is the one that created these unforgettable franchises.
Many thought “Star Wars” would flop, but Lucas made sure that his vision for the film was good, and in the end… It was great!
No one believed in that movie, George made his film, and was also scared.
But it was a huge hit!
It has space adventure, fun, romance, humor, friendship, family, and so on!
It has all of that in one fantastic movie trilogy!
“Indiana Jones” was also fantastic!
It has everything that “Star Wars” has, but also with treasure hunting and mystery.
Now these films are so memorable because of the characters, settings, and stories.
It is simple, but sweet and effective!
2. George Lucas inspired many film directors/writers to create memorable blockbusters!
George Lucas created a huge, immersive universe!
And with that, because of how fantastic and memorable “Star Wars” is, he inspired many filmmakers to make memorable big blockbuster movies.
Movies that are blockbusters and the ones that all of us love and remember!
Memorable blockbusters such as
“Toy Story”
“Independence Day”
“The Dark Knight Rises”.
And many more!
These movies not only made a lot of money, but are also loved by many for their stories and characters.
It shows a chain reaction of effect, one amazing movie, made other amazing movies get made!
And speaking of “Toy Story”.
3. He basically founded the company Pixar.
Yes, George Lucas founded PIxar.
Yes!
This Pixar!
Back in 1979, Mr. Lucas hired Ed Catmull, from The New York Institution of Technology, to be the head of Lucas’s computer division.
Then in 1983, he hired future Pixar Chief Creative Officer, John Lasster, to help animate visual effects for movies, and to develop state of the art technology for animated shorts.
Then in 1986, a man named Steve Jobs bought the division for $5 million, thus renaming it to Pixar.
At first they were making shorts, but then during the early 90′s. they were developing “Toy Story”, and of course became a huge hit and is now a classic!
4. George Lucas created one of the biggest and most innovative companies ever!
So you guys know George Lucas the filmmaker.
But do you know George Lucas the businessman?
Well just in case you guys didn’t know, Mr. Lucas started a film and TV production company called Lucasfilm.
Which have produced memorable movies and television shows such as every single “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” film.
Also producing the hit animated TV series, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”.
But that’s not all!
He also started the innovative visual effects company, Industrial Light and Magic.
This company is still innovative for creating groundbreaking visual effects for memorable blockbusters!
Blockbusters such as “T2: Judgement Day”, “Jurassic Park”, “The Avengers”, and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.
Those are just to name a few!
He also created the company, Skywalker Sound.
A post-production sound mixing/editing and music scoring company.
That gives iconic sounds such as Darth Vader’s breathing, and the sound of Wall-E.
They have done so much sound work for many movies, that their sounds are unique and innovative.
And finally, there’s Lucasarts.
The then video game developer, now video game publisher and licensor.
The company behind “Lego Star Wars”, “Star Wars: Battlefront”, and “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed”.
They have immersed us into video games and we all still have fun playing these fun and enjoyable video games!
5. George Lucas is very charitable.
So he is a passionate filmmaker and businessman.
But he is also willing to give to others.
He had donated millions and millions of dollars to multiple charity organizations.
He said that he was going to use most of the $4.5 billion that he was paid by Disney, after they bought his company.
He is also gonna open the, “Lucas Museum of Narrative Art”, sometime in the near future.
George Lucas has made mistakes and is been criticized on multiple occasions, but he still does good things for people, and inspires filmmakers to always have an imagination.
I love this guy so much, that in school, I did a visual presentation on how he made a huge impact on pop culture.
it’s VERY difficult to find anything on amazon, it’s either OT, ST or Clone Wars
and I get that clone wars is prequel era but… uh… what about the three films that came out?
I mean come on guys, people liked the fucking prequels, you don’t have to be afraid to also cater to those people.
There is much less prequel merch than OT merch but there is some! Here’s what I see when hangin’ round my favourite nerd shops talking to the people there*
*I mean, people who I actually know, or people who strike up conversations with me, don’t worry
Lego
Prequel-era lego seems to be everywhere in toy stores, just hidden behind all the new sets? They’re definitely in there though, I’m sure, just grab ‘em and move ‘em to the front
get ‘em online: Walmart(scroll down a couple of rows) Toys R Us (ditto)
Episode I Tsum Tsums
LOOK HOW FUCKIN CUTE THEY ARE? Also cheap which is good. FUN FACT: talked to a retail lady about them once and she told me they’d all sold out in one day and jar jar was sold out first
get ‘em online: should be on the Disney Store website, but aren’t? Apparently are just in stores? Thanks, Disney. Are on Amazon though…and more expensive…I have no idea what’s going on with these
Action figures
I keep seeing Prequel action figures in Forbidden Planet, but my local Forbidden Planet is awesomer than most. Vintage toy stores also seem to have them, because 1999-2005ish is vintage now (I feel old)
get ‘em online:
Try Hasbro? Or Dorkside Toys? Probably best to go after specific characters on Ebay though
Funko Pops
I LOVE THESE THINGS SO MUCH.
….Admittedly, though, there’s not many prequel ones. In fact, I can count them on my fingers: Queen Amidala, Darth Maul, Holographic Darth Maul, Jar Jar, Kit Fisto and Plo Koon. (Plus the Yoda is holding a lightsaber, so I guess that makes him prequel-era too) My constant attempts to petition the offical Funko Pops Twitter with demands for a Qui-Gon have so far gone unregarded
get ‘em online: I have NO IDEA where to buy them in the US? You might be best off searching for specific characters on Ebay again
Mugs
Found this Maul Mug in the Disney store the other week. I didn’t buy it because I don’t drink hot drinks (don’t ask) but he’s pretty cool right? Also available in duck form
ALSO DON’T FORGET: The Star Wars Shakespeare series! All six movies (presumably TFA will be along later) done in the style of Shakespeare! ALSO ALSO DON’T FORGET: The Anakin and Obi-Wan comic series, which I dunno if you can get online but you can get in comic stores!
