!!! Here’s the last of Padme’s (and Sabe’s) Phantom Menace costumes reimagined in the 1940′s!!!
I’ll take a break before I move on to AotC, which will move us into ’56! If you’ve been enjoying these, give my patreon a look! This month’s postcards will be from the 1940′s-50′s Star Wars prequels project! Join at the $5 level for all three of the below, or special this March, at the $1 level for a single, random postcard.
Okay, so I love Shuri and I can’t wait for her to meet Peter, but you know who else I’m hoping she meets in Infinity War? Mantis. I just want these two rays of sunshine to be in the same room, because Shuri will be so curious about how Mantis’ powers work, and their optimism will create a positive feedback loop that will save the world.
I’m currently rewatching all the star wars movies with my parents. So far we’ve managed TPM and AotC. Here are some things I appreciate:
TPM:
Shmi
Shmi telling Anakin that he must let go and that change cannot be stopped
Qui-Gon Jinn
My mom looking at me and grinning every time Jar Jar Binks is on screen because kid me loved him
My mom calling Palpatine “that traitor”
Darth Maul is introduced, my mom, immediately afterwards: “WAIT, who’s that???”
Qui-Gon Jinn touching people’s shoulders and being a soft gentle giant of a man
Quiggles towering over everyone else
Shmi Skywalker
it being the one movie where Obi-Wan actually flashes the smallest hints of skin in the form of a bit of his collar bones
Mace Windu and Yoda sharing a look that says “this bitch” when Qui-Gon is talking in the council chamber
Mace’s resigned “bring him here” when Quiggles want Anakin tested
Obi-Wan Kenobi’s little snarl when facing down Darth Maul while Qui-Gon lies dying
AotC:
My mom’s utterly amazing confusion
Who are the good guys and the bad guys?
The amount of times the Jedi speak about their feelings
“He’s the best!” my mom when she sees Yoda
both my parents laughing at C3PO
My mom’s continued complete confusion, to the point where we paused the movie and I tried to give her a short rundown of the sociopolitical situation in SW and also the clone wars
Obi-Wan being surrounded by much taller friends
my mom calling Palpatine “the traitor”
My mom being SUPER SURPRISED when I said Palpatine was Sidious
the tension between Obi-Wan and Jango Fett, could be cut with a knife for sure
The Jedi talking about trusting their feelings
Dooku looking fucking sad when talking about Qui-Gon
my dad pretending he knows what’s going on but actually being close to as confused as my mom
finally managing to get a proper run down of Palpatine = Sidious = The Emperor = Vader’s Master but ALSO Palpatine = Chancellor of the Republic, Master of Dooku who’s the leader of the separatists
my mom having a better grasp of what happens when I said that the PT is about the fall of the Republic and birth of the Empire, and that the Emperor is in charge of the Empire which Luke Skywalker rebels against and that’s about 25 years into the future from where we’re currently at
both my parents being fucking confused about the clones because ??? stormtroopers???
so who ARE the good guys?
Is Dooku a good guy? He seemed like a good guy…
Who is fighting who?
My parents finally (probably?) understanding the politics of SW
every time my parents said that they really didn’t remember this movie. have they really seen this movie before? they don’t remember this movie at all.
that one Jedi that GIVES IT HIS ALL and tries to go for Dooku, but fails to reflect three blasts in a row from Fett and dies. YOU TRIED IT, RANDOM JEDI
my parents nodding sagely (dad: “exactly”) when Anakin concedes the point that Padmé would do her fucking duty
my parents laughing along with me when Yoda immediately after having jumped around like a bouncing ball on speed while fighting Dooku picks up his cane and starts hobbling over to Anakin and Obi-Wan
Padmé running up to Anakin and kissing him right in front of everyone as they’re the most subtle of people ever
