as someone who was in an abusive relationship for four years i cannot express to you how many self proclaimed progressives just straight up consider themselves morally superior to me when i tell them i was abused. because they think it could never happen to them, they’re too smart, too strong, too perceptive, they’d never let it happen to them. they think i saw the red flags right away and just chose to keep dating him, when in actuality people like him hide those red flags and introduce them slowly to see how far they can push your boundaries. toward the end of the relationship, i knew i was being abused. i said it out loud. i said it to my best friend, who responded “when you’re ready to leave, i’ll be here”. but when i tried to talk to other progressive people about what i was going through, their response was always something along the lines of either “what did you expect when you chose to date a man?” or “and you’re choosing to stay with him?????” or even “you staying with him even though you know he’s a Bad Abusive Person means you’re clearly a Bad Abusive Person too.” it made it SO much harder to actually leave because that messaging paired with my abuser telling me i’d never find anyone else who would “put up with” me had me believing that being abused was what i deserved. because i’d chosen to date a man, because i’d chosen to date someone who wasn’t a good person, because i’d chosen to be abused. every day i hope the people who said those things to me never have to find out firsthand that no one is immune to manipulation and abuse. no amount of wokeness or moral purity will save you. the only thing that will save you is compassion and community.
this is such a horrendous dogshit mindset, so much of emotional abuse is about cutting off outside support, I’d either be dead or as good as if i hadn’t had the like two whole people who knew what was going on & were still there for me

15 seconds is too long in a life-threatening situation. I’m remembering the shooting that occurred on the N train (either last year or 2022?)—if something like that happened in the station itself, 15 seconds is enough time to end a lot of lives. People might not be as lucky as they were on the N. NYC is safer than a lot of non-New Yorkers may think, but that doesn’t mean it can’t ever happen. Again.
That’s not the only example, there’s any number of things that could happen where 15 seconds will make a difference in who lives or dies. This is so dangerous and honestly it feels like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Not to one-up prev who has made many good points but I would go a little further and say that it’s social murder waiting to happen.

Since I’m reading many people disheartened at the lack of ordering a ceasefire by the ICJ, here’s some info:
The ruling was BIG and far more than many expected. I, for one, certainly did not expect that the German judge ruled in favor of all of the provisional measures, nor that the Israeli judge would rule in favor of some of them. That is absolutely ground-breaking.
This ruling, whilst not final, will change the course of how the international community is going to act towards Israel, because now they are all going to be very careful not to be complicit in what potentially might be ruled as an actual genocide in the merits case (which will likely take years, but that’s how it goes).
Governments and individuals have a face to lose, and the ICJ ruling is one more nail in the coffin of their complicity.

Went back to reread the ruling in light of this. As the threshold for urgency has been met Israel has been ordered to cease to do the following things immediately, and to stop its military from doing so too:
"(a) killing members of the group [Palestinians];
b) causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical
destruction in whole or in part; and (d) imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;"
Despite understanding that it's a genocide, not a war, many of us have been pulled into the dominant rhetoric of a ceasefire which presumes that the victims of the genocide are parties to mutual hostility. I was guilty of this too.
Neither Hamas, nor any other force in Gaza, were parties to the case, so a 'ceasefire' could never have been in the ruling. Instead they have ruled that Israel must suspend its genocide against Palestinians.
