You know I never actually bothered to read the divorce papers Carol serves to Phil before?
“This petition states that both parties that the husband in said marriage was a terrible spouse.”
“___ hope the divorce makes you a better person and that you will stop harassing the people around you with lice” [?]
“Please do not take this document lightly. By signing this document you will ensure that you never have physical contact with Ms Pilbasian, other than the following: Hugs, High Fives, Hand Shakes, Pats, accidental bumping and or group hugs”
Character: Phil “Tandy” Miller Appears in: The Last Man on Earth Commonly interpreted as: Straight
But really: Though Phil is first shown as an almost aggressively heterosexual dude, and though he eventually ends up in a loving relationship with a woman, there’s a couple of scenes and lines that could possibly hint towards his being bi. Firstly, when Melissa says to him in episode 01×04 “I would saw off my right arm to make out with a dude,” Phil responds with “I would, too. It’s natural,” and doesn’t correct himself, even though it would been more in character for him – at that point in the show a seriously obnoxious guy only interested in sleeping with beautiful women – to do so immediately.
Secondly, when the more attractive other Phil shows up at the survivors’ home base, there’s a brief scene where Phil observes New Phil taking off his shirt, and he stares (as the camera slow-pans down New Phil’s pecs) before getting flustered and starting to knock things over. Whilst this could be read as Phil freaking out that New Phil is so much better looking (and therefore a threat to his own romantic entanglements with women) it doesn’t necessarily have to read that way.
Thirdly, and probably most tellingly, Phil’s brother later tells the group that Phil once had “a real boner for” a male football player, and was “obsessed” with him to the point he spied on him with binoculars. Phil seems pretty uncomfortable with this being brought up, but doesn’t deny it. Whilst it’s very probable the writers didn’t intend for a Phil-as-bisexual reading, it’s definitely a plausible one.
Pat’s come for us like a bloodthirsty rat to his pied piper. But Tandy will save us. Be careful, my love!Tandy approaches. Pat is sadistically calm. Tandy suggests a truce. Diplomacy fails.
