WHAT AN EPISODE. things that made me tear up:
- Gail’s revelation, which I totally called on the TLMOE subreddit yesterday. I wonder what her son died of and how old he was.
- Lewis
breaking down at the pictures of him and Mark. a+ acting from Ken Choi
and also :( :( :( I kept wondering if Mark was an actor we knew in the
photos (they did the same trick with Jason S) but actually, though I did
wonder if it was Zachary Quinto, I don’t think it was- aaaaand
the Mike question remains unanswered but devastating. I’m not surprised
Phil couldn’t go in the room in the end. I wonder what he put in the
note, but I suppose the point is that we’ll never know. Maybe the point
is that we’ll never actually know if Mike is dead or not, too. This show
is very adamant about the fact that there isn’t always closure.other things I loved:
- “And
‘cos I love you.” “I love you too, Carol”. This show does female
friendship really well (except when they completely forget about how
close Carol and Melissa were, which they have done)- Gail and Carol as a mother-daughter pair is a good substitute, though
- “Kris and Caitlyn Jenner.
Double granny whammy there!” And Carol’s whole weird gran scrapbook in fact
- Phil’s speech about how Carol saved him. I think he meant saved in more ways than one.
- “You are the most frustrating, annoying lunatic I have ever met!And I was on a boat with PAT!”
- I love how the Miller family wall is packed with photos celebrating Mike’s achievements, but the ridiculous photo of Phil winning a burrito eating competition is also center stage. Phil’s mum and dad were good parents

- GIVE ERICA SOMETHING TO DO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
- She dated Mike! She really liked him! Next episode should have her and Phil talking about him FOR SURE, but it probably won’t
- This episode has done nothing to dissuade my opinion that Phil is bisexual and just remarkably….bad at it
- Who would’ve thought Melissa (poor Melissa) would be into Shawshank Redemption slash

The Shawshank thing was another season one callback, I thought?
Oh it was, but I did not expect Melissa-as-Andy to try and sex up Todd-as-Red. (nor did I expect the tunnel, come to think of it….)
PS I love how the Shawshank Redemption bit, in its own way, tied into the theme of the episode. “hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”
“last man on earth” is such a good show; i wish it got more fandom attention!
#it is one of my faves but i never really talk about it#but i just love how it has this weird and often unflinchingly sad energy that’s so unique#and it’s very cool to have sort of a utopian/dystopian/postapocalyptic half hour comedy of all things#i am not necessarily loving the melissa stuff though#mostly because it feels weird to me that carol wouldn’t be more concerned about her#did the show forget they were best friends???

Of *course* Lewis’s lost loved one is called Mark, a name just a few letters away from Mike
Also I really, really wish I would stop hearing people say “I’m glad Melissa is interesting now, she was such a BITCH in season 1!” Because… no she wasn’t? She hated the guy who was creeping on her all the time and let him know how awful she thought he was. If the criteria for “bitch” is “rejects and dislikes the man who won’t take no for an answer” that says a lot about what people think about real-life women who dare to give a clear “no” to men. >:(
That was very much a filler episode (although the Phil/Carol bits were nice) but I’m pretty sure we’re actually finally going somewhere with The Mike Question next episode. Based on the promo and episode synopsis I’m guessing Phil and Lewis will be going to Seattle to determine the fate of the partner Lewis mentioned, and Phil will tell Lewis everything about Mike and they’ll end up taking a detour to Tuscon. Or something. Mike will be involved, anyway. DAMMIT JUST REVEAL WHAT HAPPENED TO MIKE ALREADY.
Also, I really wish they’d give Erica something to do. She’s had nothing for ages. :(
