spiderman

I did actually see Spider-Man: Homecoming today! There are a lot of things I really liked about it. I frickin love that it has a more diverse cast than any MCU movie released so far, and that you can see Jewish kids!! and Muslim kids!!! just randomly chilling out in the background like how they don’t generally on screen. And I loved Ned. That kid is awesome. He even made a fedora adorable. What?

BUT I guess…I can’t quite get over how they translated the female characters to screen. Okay, you’ve got a lovely, sweet Liz Allen, she’s perfect. You’ve got Betty Brant with… with the exact iconic Gwen Stacy look, blonde hair and black hairband, okay I’ll go with that I guess? And then you’ve got Zendaya, the perfect casting choice for Mary Jane Watson, playing someone who has the nickname MJ but is not technically Mary Jane Watson? Okay….? And the message I got from all that is that Peter’s main love interests throughout the years – Liz, Betty, Gwen and Mary Jane – are interchangable in the eyes of these filmmakers, and that really and truly bums me out. Add to that that Aunt May never really gets her due either, and…

Basically, it is a really, really good superhero movie it’s just not a very good Spider-Man movie? I mean… there’s not a single mention of Uncle Ben in there. A Spider-Man film!? That doesn’t mention Uncle Ben!? Come on!

So hey even though Kevin Feige is kinda covering his ass on the whole Michelle/MJ thing, writer Jon Francis Daley said he fully intended for her to be the new Mary Jane when he was putting the script together, and has lamented that ultimately it’s not his call. Outside the whole he-said-he-said publicity nonsense the film 100% plays as though Michelle is supposed to be MJ. -wackd

Ya know what, I still haven’t seen it yet, but I’m gonna ROLL WITH THAT and assume she’s Mary Jane who just changed her name (but still likes the MJ nickname.)

(Of course a sequel may still ruin that but…. still.)

“We took all the credit for casting a black actress as a beloved white character, and then pulled the rug out from under everyone.”

ugh the moment in the first sam raimi spider-man movie when harry is criticizing mary jane for not wearing back because his father likes black, and she’s like, “maybe he’ll be impressed no matter what”–that must’ve been so hard for someone with low self confidence i’m so proud of her

I love Harry but a good boyfriend he was not, and she was right to ditch him

Stan Lee’s meeting with his wife Joan as retold in ‘Amazing Fantastic Incredible: A Marvelous Memoir’

Bonus :

This gets better when you realize Peter Parker was both Stan’s favourite personal creation and that he saw him as a stand in for himself.

Reposting in memory of Joan Lee

Just a reminder that in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, Mary Jane Watson is a lonely girl who seems happy on the outside but suffers abuse at home that shapes her perception of herself for years to come, as each and every let down seems like a direct result of her own failure as a woman and a person, We see her fight for what she wants, stand up for herself, grow empathetic and forgiving and generous with her heart, be flawed and selfish and angry and human, chase after her dreams, and continue to fight every day through the mundane cycle of life because by the end she finally knows she deserves to be happy. And that is a hell of a character arc. And I’m still grateful we got it.
