RNLI & a disgrace

Today the Daily Mail, that last bastion of patriotism, decided it would be a great idea to slag off the RNLI because – gasp – sometimes they assist and save people who aren’t British. Who aren’t even white!! is the Daily Heil’s very strong implication. Luckily, I finally got a little taste of how it feels to be actually proud of your country when people fought back:

I donated some money and you can too! And on some personal notes:

One: A few years ago I wrote a “Thunderbirds” satire about International Rescue being taken to task for rescuing refugees and asylum seekers. I took some of the dialogue from real newspaper headlines. Maybe it needs an update.

Two: I never lived in a seaside town but my dad did, and my grandmother still does. Usually whenever we visit we can see the lifeboat station at work. Here’s some of the things they did recently.

I’ll donate again next time I’m there.

This story made me SO angry

From the UK:

But arguably the worst part is the pub’s backhanded, victim-blaming “apology”:

Staff expressed that if this had been known beforehand, or an explanation given sooner, the situation could have been avoided.

Ah yes, she should have EXPLAINED THE DEEPLY PERSONAL MATTER to complete strangers before BEING ALLOWED TO USE THE BATHROOM. What does Wetherspoons require of customers who simply have the runs (probably from eating their food)? Do they insist on every shit being declared to them beforehand? She did not owe anyone an explanation for using a bathroom. This is a godawful apology, if you can call it that, and I sincerely hope that before too long they have to issue an apology for the apology.

Fuck Wetherspoons, and fuck the ableist culture which leads to these things happening on a regular basis. That poor girl. I’m so mad.

Pictures from the Leicester anti-prorogation protest, 29/08/19

The second of two protests I’ve attended in the past two months.

Whether this sign refers to the Game of Thrones Jon Snow or the left-wing TV presenter Jon Snow, I know nothing.

This protest was MUCH better attended than the last one. I was pleasantly surprised.

Boris is indeed a dick.

This picture came out blurry, but that sign in the middle is a picture of Emperor Palpatine and the words “I am the senate.” Because democracy is still dying in thunderous applause.

A Bit of Banter

It goes without saying there are a lot of anger-making stories in the news right now, but this one particularly stood out to me.

This man’s defence was that the cardboard figures he had inside the cardboard “Grenfell Tower” effigy he burned were supposed to be him and his friends. I absolutely cannot get my head around this. His defence is that he thought it would be funny to imagine all his friends burning to death, apparently. Sorry for all the italics but that is the most pathetic, piss-poor excuse I’ve ever heard for anything.

Anyway, he got off.

Other excuses Paul Bussetti dished out: One of the figures he burned was supposed to be a person in a ninja costume, rather than a caricature of a Muslim person. Everyone at the party thought it was funny (to see figures apparently supposed to be themselves burn up). Despite the fact people uncovered a history of him making racist remarks, it absolutely was not racist. It was, in his words “just banter” except of course that normal damn people don’t banter about multitudes of people dying in a horrible, preventable tragedy.

Well. There’s only a couple of months to go until Bonfire Night. I hear people like burning effigys then, too, Paul.

#NotMyPM

#NotMyPM. I’m frightened because I have seen what Johnson thinks of the NHS, and the NHS is vitally, inanely, incomprehensibly important to this country. Most people I know rely on it. I rely on it. Without the NHS my loved ones who are very severely disabled will very possibly die, as that is simply what happens to disabled folks who live in places which value profit above people.

Please reassure me we’re going to fight for it tooth and nail.

Bad and bizarre news has been absolutely crashing down on Britain these past few days obviously, but here’s something that stood out to me while reading it yesterday. ISIS member Jack Letts (British/Canadian) wasn’t deprived of British citizenship. ISIS member Shamima Begum (British/Bangladeshi) was.

Equal crimes but only one newborn baby is dead.
