What does Qui-Gon have to say in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi? And a charity stream for mental health awareness! — Making Star Wars

Very recently, I met with some crew members of Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Mandalorian 3 and the upcoming Ahsoka series. We got to talking about RPGs and a charity event I will be helping out with. There is a subtext to Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi that really ties into ideas of hope during our darkest times […]

What does Qui-Gon have to say in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi? And a charity stream for mental health awareness! — Making Star Wars

So, I’m really trying not to get my hopes up too high for a Qui-Gon appearance in the Obi-Wan show, not least because Liam Neeson has said he isn’t in it. (He could be lying Andrew Garfield-style, I suppose.) But if this actually happens –

In Chapter Six, after all is said and done, the blue ghost of Qui-Gon Jinn does manifest for Kenobi. As Qui-Gon appears in front of Kenobi, Obi-Wan looks on in amazement, hardly able to believe his own eyes. Qui-Gon Jinn smiles at Kenobi and asks him what took him so long? Qui-Gon then says he’s been there with him the entire time.

-my Phantom Menace/Jedi Apprentice loving self will be SO BEYOND crying tears of joy. I will be sobbing for days.

spotted-newt:

I’m continuing on my quest to find interviews with Lucas so I can chew on what the creator of Star Wars has said about his universe, and boy there are so many interesting gems that I never see fandom talk about. These are from a 1999 interview with Bill Moyers:

BILL MOYERS: Are you going to be prepared for that
moment when your daughter says-~your older daughter is about to go off
already and — and say, ‘This is the way I want to go, Dad.’

GEORGE LUCAS: I think there is a point where, even
though you love your children a great deal, you must let go, which is
actually what “The Phantom Menace” is about.

BILL MOYERS: “The Phantom Menace” is about letting go?

GEORGE LUCAS: It’s about letting go.

BILL MOYERS: In what sense?

GEORGE LUCAS: In the sense that you have this young
boy, who’s 10 years old, who has to leave his mother and go off on his
own and the mother has to let him go because otherwise he would be a
slave the rest of his life.

This is FASCINATING to me because fandom likes to squabble over Anakin and Qui-Gon, and fandom especially likes to get mad over Shmi “getting left behind”, but this scene was actually about Shmi letting go of Anakin. It’s about Shmi letting go of Anakin so that he can live a better life. A parent letting go of their child. Her staying behind is crucial to the message Lucas was trying to send.

GEORGE LUCAS: I make these films for myself more than I make them for anybody else.
I mean, I’m lucky that the things I believe in, and the things that I
enjoy and the things that entertain me entertain a large population.
Sometimes they don’t. I mean, I’ve made a bunch of movies that nobody’s
liked so that doesn’t always hold true. But I certainly wasn’t out to
become successful, it — it happened.

BILL MOYERS: You are financing your own movies.

GEORGE LUCAS: I’m financing my own movies and it
allows me the freedom to have my own — my own vision be accurately
portrayed on the screen, and I will, you know, be successful or
unsuccessful based on how people relate to that vision. But I don’t have
a lot of other people coming and telling me really what to do.

(bold added by me)

This is one of the reasons I personally like the first 6 movies better than the rest of the content floating around. They tell the story that Lucas wanted to tell. Anything made by other folks is going to have different intentions and different biases and different worldviews that aren’t necessarily going to line up with Lucas.’

There are more gems in here, but I’ll leave this at just the two for now xD

Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader in 'Obi-Wan Kenobi'
| Credit: Lucasfilm Ltd.ALT

“I wish I could tell you,” Christensen tells EW with a coy smile on his face [if we see him without the mask]. “I’m sworn to secrecy.”

As for the kind of Dark Lord we’ll see in the series that helps fill in the gap of time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, Christensen is more straightforward: “We’re going to see a very powerful Vader,” promises the actor.

While it sounds like there is a chance we may see Vader unmasked, how much Vader in general will we actually see on the show?

“His shadow is cast across so much of what we do,” series writer Joby Harold teases. “And the degree of his proximity to that shadow is something that we’ll discover. But he is very much a part of the show emotionally for Obi-Wan, and possibly beyond that as well.” (x)

These two quotes fill me with so much excitement and hope, like it seems as if the writer Joby Harold understands the role that Vader will play, and the idea of seeing a powerful Vader is just 🙌

‘Star Wars’ Fans Raise Money for Transgender Youth in Honor of Padmé’s Influence — The Mary Sue

Star Wars is a series that helps to inspire hope among fans. Whether it is through Leia’s determination to lead or Padmé’s willingness to do what she thinks is right, the women of the Skywalker family have inspired children for decades, and we’re just talking about the Skywalkers! That’s not even getting into the rest…

‘Star Wars’ Fans Raise Money for Transgender Youth in Honor of Padmé’s Influence — The Mary Sue

In a week of horrible news, this is a really nice story.

meeting Obi-Wan Kenobi again

Oh wow. I got chills when Duel of the Fates kicked in, it’s still one of the most stunning pieces of music I’ve heard anywhere, not just in Star Wars.

WHAT a day it’s been for prequel fans! I always wondered if it would come. It seemed terribly unlikely in the days where people preferred actors, directors, and teenage fans to kill themselves but it’s nice to know there were always some people out there who wanted to build. My fourteen-year-old self who posted endless fanfiction on theforce.net message boards is SCREAMING right now. (Her username on there was female_obi_wan.)
