spoilers

hmmm all the major deaths so far on the show have tied into the concept of family:

Phil dies out of sheer misfortune, but his last words are about his baby

Mike dies of the virus, but his last act is making sure his brother won’t witness it

and Gail dies because she was trying to escape her new family, as her first one was already lost.

(granted 2/3 of these people might not be dead, or might not be dead yet, but. sadness.)

the last man on earth midseason finale

sarah531:

that was the bleakest sad-song montage in a series full of them

that was also the bleakest goddamn episode they’ve probably ever done. if we’re meant to take the ending at face value, holy shit. :(

a few more things:

Some very smart person on AV Club pointed out that Tandy’s behaviour lines up with the symptoms of mania, and has done for some time. Meanwhile Melissa is disassociating to the point of almost getting herself killed, Carol is the most depressed we’ve ever seen her, and when Pat inevitably comes back presumably he’ll still be paranoid. This series is going HARD on the mental health issues, and it hasn’t always done them perfectly but damn. Despite all the jokes and stuff, it seems a very realistic (in some ways) depiction of what people would actually be like at the end of the world.

I don’t know what’s going to happen with the aeroplane plot, but I sort of hope Lewis will attempt to fly to Tokyo, fail (he hasn’t exactly had much practice) but find another survivor or two along the way.

ERICA STILL HAS NOTHING TO DO, though the baby seems to be starting to show now? She was at least a month or two ahead of Carol, surely…

the last man on earth “the open-ended nature of unwitnessed deaths”

WHAT AN EPISODE. things that made me tear up:

  • Gail’s revelation, which I totally called on the TLMOE subreddit yesterday. I wonder what her son died of and how old he was.
  • Lewis breaking down at the pictures of him and Mark. a+ acting from Ken Choi and also :( :( :( I kept wondering if Mark was an actor we knew in the photos (they did the same trick with Jason S) but actually, though I did wonder if it was Zachary Quinto, I don’t think it was
  • aaaaand the Mike question remains unanswered but devastating. I’m not surprised Phil couldn’t go in the room in the end. I wonder what he put in the note, but I suppose the point is that we’ll never know. Maybe the point is that we’ll never actually know if Mike is dead or not, too. This show
is very adamant about the fact that there isn’t always closure.

other things I loved:

  • “And ‘cos I love you.” “I love you too, Carol”. This show does female friendship really well (except when they completely forget about how close Carol and Melissa were, which they have done)
  • Gail and Carol as a mother-daughter pair is a good substitute, though
  • “Kris and Caitlyn Jenner. Double granny whammy there!” And Carol’s whole weird gran scrapbook in fact
  • Phil’s speech about how Carol saved him. I think he meant saved in more ways than one.
  • “You are the most frustrating, annoying lunatic I have ever met!And I was on a boat with PAT!”
  • I love how the Miller family wall is packed with photos celebrating Mike’s achievements, but the ridiculous photo of Phil winning a burrito eating competition is also center stage. Phil’s mum and dad were good parents

other other things:

  • GIVE ERICA SOMETHING TO DO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
  • She dated Mike! She really liked him! Next episode should have her and Phil talking about him FOR SURE, but it probably won’t
  • This episode has done nothing to dissuade my opinion that Phil is bisexual and just remarkably….bad at it
  • Who would’ve thought Melissa (poor Melissa) would be into Shawshank Redemption slash

what. an. episode.

tlmoe 3×01

ahaha Jon Hamm

I wish they had shown more of Phil dealing with Mike’s death but “I should have died instead of him” is a quiet gut-punch, just like this show delivers so well

I really like Louis (Lewis?) despite/because of implications that he may have a terrible secret. Also, hooray that they took this opportunity to diversify the cast and add an Asian character. Also, also, I was trying to work where I’d seen him before, turns out it was The People vs OJ Simpson!

I hope we do get some proper mourning of Mike beyond a few snippets of sadness though.

The Last Man On Earth Season 3 Review

The Last Man On Earth Season 3 Review

With the death of his brother, Mike (Jason Sudeikis) still hitting him
hard, Tandy (Forte) has an entirely new problem, which came cruising up
to the beach of the group’s lavish Malibu home in last year’s closing
shot.

Oh thank god, Mike’s not been forgotten

‘Last Man on Earth’ Season 3 Tease: Is Mr. T Coming to Malibu?

‘Last Man on Earth’ Season 3 Tease: Is Mr. T Coming to Malibu?

Will’s teasers-

1. Gail Klosterman (Mary Steenburgen) becomes a mom.

2. Mr. T comes to Malibu.

3. The world’s population is cut in half.

I really hope they don’t make Erica die in childbirth, leaving Gail to raise her baby. It sounds far-fetched, but the cast did promise ‘more episodes like Silent Night’ and we all know what happened in Silent Night. I’ll just be really annoyed if the show ends up killing both its Black characters. >:(

(Of course, I’m probably overthinking it. Erica probably just has the baby and Gail becomes its second mom. Or Erica and Gail end up together, making Gail the second parent. WHO KNOWS)
