Spider-Man 2.1 – MJ and Louise shoe shopping deleted scene
Here we learn how really emotionally abusive MJ’s home life was, and her motivations for marrying John. It’s a quiet little scene, so I can see why they cut it, but oh, poor MJ.
I don’t have this edition of the DVD, so I’d never seen this before — thanks for sharing it!
Yeah, as a whole, the scene doesn’t tell us anything we’re not already shown in other parts of the movie, so the decision not to include it was probably a good one. On the other hand, it would’ve been nice to see more of MJ’s social life, and it would have been really, really nice if only Raimi could’ve kept this exchange:
LOUISE: What about that perfect kiss you said you had once, that guy you believed in?
MARY JANE: That was a fantasy. That’s all he is.which makes it explicit that MJ knows her crush on Spider-Man was just that, a crush, and she’s moved on. Though she’s speaking from disillusionment, she’s not wrong, either: the Spider-Man she knows at this point is just a fantasy, and so for that matter is Peter, her endlessly flaky BFF. It’s a self-aware reflection of what’s going on at Peter’s end, too. Though he clearly cares about MJ as a person — that’s why they’re close friends in the first place — he persists in keeping her on a pedestal and at emotional arms’ length. They can’t work as a couple until he lets her see who he really is and make her own decision.
Now that I’ve put that down in words I’ve just realized Peter and MJ’s split in Spider-Man 3 makes a lot more sense than I’ve thought in the past, as it comes down to Peter having problems letting MJ off her pedestal and MJ having problems figuring out where the fantastic elements of Peter’s life fits into her reality. (There’s still waaaay too much plot-mandated lack of common sense going on in that movie, though.)
I feel sort of bad for continually reblogging people’s MJ posts with this much tl;dr lately…
Oh god, don’t feel bad, this is brilliant!

Ursula ships it.
The boy she spent a movie madly crushing on now has a girlfriend and she’s not jealous she’s happy and encouraging (and I think we can assume she likes Mary Jane, too.) Oh Ursula, my lovely mature sweet underappreciated baby.
(You did your female characters REALLY well, Spider-Man trilogy. I’ll never stop loving you for that.)
I had a sudden realization after watching all the Spiderman movies that starred Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.. Mary Jane Watson is a slut. I mean like, on Spider 3; when she got all prissy on Peter Parker for doing “their kiss” with some other chick? She did the same with that astronaut dude she was suppose to marry then left at the alter for Parker. Quite an envious bitch. Way to be unconditional. In addition, she flirted with Parker back when she was still in a relationship with Harry Osborn and shit. I did notice how she likes to just dodge the guys in her life around and joggles them as she please. Harry’s dad was totally right about her not being worth his time. Harry did deserve better and he should’ve listened. She makes a classic bitch for breaking such a great friendship apart like that between Harry and Peter. And I never really appreciated her purpose in the movie in the first place, to be honest.
Yes. I’m that affected by this.
I too am affected by this.
Because none of it is true. And one’s worth as a character, one’s worth as a person, is not dictated by how many guys you sleep with. Let’s go through all this:
Mary Jane Watson is a slut.
The Spider-Man movies take place over roughly three years, and in that time MJ has four relationships- Flash, Harry, John and Peter. And you know what? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with trying to find the right guy- nothing wrong with a woman having sex, even! An amazing concept, I know, but true.
I mean like, on Spider 3; when she got all prissy on Peter Parker for doing “their kiss” with some other chick? She did the same with that astronaut dude she was suppose to marry then left at the alter for Parker.
Apart from the fact that Peter was in a relationship with MJ when he kissed Gwen. MJ wasn’t in a relationship with Peter when she kissed John. Doesn’t matter what sort of kiss it was.
In addition, she flirted with Parker back when she was still in a relationship with Harry Osborn and shit.
No she didn’t. She only ever treated Peter like a friend. She kissed Spider-Man, true, and she probably shouldn’t have done that even though she was having doubts about Harry at that point- but one snog in the heat of the moment does not a ‘slut’ make.
Harry’s dad was totally right about her not being worth his time.
Harry’s dad called his own wife, Harry’s mother, a gold-digger! And, you know…implied to Peter that he was going to rape his girlfriend.
So. Yeah.
Harry did deserve better and he should’ve listened.
Well he didn’t think so, since he risked his life to save her and asked her to stay with him when he was dying.
She makes a classic bitch for breaking such a great friendship apart like that between Harry and Peter.
WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT?
Harry and Peter were doing a perfectly good job of breaking their friendship apart in the first place- she didn’t even know what was going on til halfway through the last movie! Then Harry used her as a pawn to get to Peter, she complied because she thought she was saving his life and…that’s pretty much it. She had nothing to do with it, she wanted them to be friends! She probably shouldn’t have kissed Harry, but she was in despair because she thought her life and relationship was falling apart, and she ran away as soon as she realised what she’d done.
Anyway, look at what we know about movie!MJ. Men have let her down all her life. Her father calls her ‘trash’ to her face! Then she goes out with Flash, who’s a bullying jerk, then she goes out with Harry whose father loudly implies in front of everyone that she’s a slut- it’s a miracle she doesn’t have more difficulties with relationships.
But you know what? The films themselves don’t condemn her for any of that. If you go into the Spider-Man films and come out agreeing with the supervillain-style misogyny we’re meant to be repulsed by, something’s gone very wrong somewhere…

sudden realisation that Spider-Man was TEN YEARS AGO
The ladies of the Spider-Man movie trilogy appreciation post:
Mary Jane Watson: Already looked at her in some depth here!
May Parker: Is the main (well, the only) reason I can’t get behind the ‘Steve and Tony are Peter’s parents!’ thing that fandom has going on. Because Peter still has a living parent: her! And while she could have easily been nothing but a featureless advice dispenser in these films, she actually had some depth to her- the scene where she shouts at Peter to take his birthday money from her even though she’s broke, that’s such a parent thing, it’s happened to us all, I loved it.
Gwen Stacy: I probably do prefer Emma Stone’s version of her, just because we got to know her better. But I love Bryce Dallas Howard’s interpretation too, she was just so nice. I like to think her and MJ became friends in this ‘verse too, sometime in the future.
Betty Brant: Her role amounted basically to a cameo in every movie, but it was still good to see her. I loved the couple of moments she did get with Peter. Also, I love Elizabeth Banks.
Ursula Ditkovich: I’ve thought for a long time that she (and her father sometimes, too) are basically the audience surrogates in Spider-Man 2 and 3- Ursula’s constantly rooting for Peter, and picking him up when he’s down. Plus, she’s named after Steve Ditko, one of Spidey’s creators. In other news, I love her to tiny pieces and might do an in-depth post about her, too, if there’s any interest. Or even if there’s not.
Rosie Octavius: We didn’t get much of a chance to know her, but her relationship with her husband was one of my favourite things about Spider-Man 2. I know that she’s really more of a device to humanize Doctor Octopus than a character in her own right, but I still liked her a lot. The novelisation expands a bit on her, actually, which is nice.
