I was just rewatching the first Iron Man movie and something stood out to me

When Tony wakes up in the cave and the terrorists come in to tell him to build the Jericho missile, Tony’s immediate response was “I refuse.”

No hesitation at all. It was clear and steadfast refusal. And even after they WATERBOARDED him multiple times, he still wasn’t willing to do it.

People say Tony Stark was just an arrogant womanizing jerk before he was Iron Man, yet even before he was the man in the armor, when faced with threats to his survival, Tony refused to build weapons that would be used by terrorists to hurt people.

Yes perhaps Tony was ignorant and naive to the reality of what his weapons could be used for or fall into the wrong hands, but his weapons manufacturing was never about the desire to hurt people but rather the desire to protect. His father built weapons for the government to help end wars and save lives, and here he is trying to continue that legacy of smarter and better weapons that would strike out enemy targets that don’t end up with collateral damage.

He had no idea that the man who helped raised him, a man he trusted, had all this time been double dealing behind his back and using him – he had no idea Obadiah was making deals with terrorists – yet the moment Tony found out his weapons were falling into the wrong hands, he put an immediate stop to it with no care about how it would effect his wealth or the fact that they were now suddenly a weapons manufacturing company that makes no weapons. What mattered more was not allowing his weapons to harm any more innocent lives.

“I saw young Americans killed by the very weapons I designed to protect them.”

The real tragedy of Tony Stark is that he cares, he cares so much, yet that care and desire to protect can also be the thing that drives him to the extreme that allows something like Ultron to come into being.

Ultron wasn’t just born out of Tony’s fear, it was also born out of Tony’s desire to save and protect lives, which is incredibly sad and tragic, that someone who has so much care and love for people, who tries so hard to protect lives, always end up creating the things that did more harm than protection.

Even in Civil War, in trying to protect the team, in trying to keep them all safe and together, the harder he tried, the more the team crumbled and broke.

Tony Stark has always wanted to save lives, to protect people, yet it almost always never goes his way, it almost always fall apart and he’s left standing in the wreckage tying to rebuild and try again because that’s all he knows how to do.

So I was thinking, related to this post about what happened to Sam on the Raft:

How much does the rest of the world know what is going on here? How much does Sam’s family know?

What if Sam’s mom takes it upon herself to camp out in front of Stark Tower at first, to demand transparency from the only Avenger left publicly standing, to ask Tony Stark where is her son? What if, as the days since she’d last heard from him start to stretch, as it becomes obvious that the ‘controversy’ over the Accords was much bigger than they’re letting on, she gathers a whole following, she reminds everyone that the Avengers are people too, that they are citizens, and that their families deserve to know what happened? What if she learns (through some deliberate tip-off by Natasha or someone) that Stark isn’t the only one responsible, that Ross is the one she really needs to talk to, and she harnesses the media spotlight to start a march from New York to Washington, asking all the while, Where is my son?

What if, when Sam is finally out of the Raft, when Sam is finally safe in Wakanda (for a few moments, at least), he turns on the TV to find his mom, his family, his co-workers, and holy shit that is a lot of other people ranged behind her, all of them asking the same question:

Where is Falcon?

Just like that, Sam’s knees won’t hold him anymore and he collapses with a hard stop on the coffee table. She’s right there, in her five-foot-nothin’ glory and best Sunday dress, in a spot in Central Park that Sam recognizes is not far from Stark Tower. Her voice is that same stern-resounding tone that he grew up with, and Sam suddenly misses her so hard his chest hurts.

It takes a long moment for him to register what, exactly, she’s so stern about, for the scrolling words at the bottom of the screen to make sense. When they do, though, Sam’s heart hurts anew: Mama Wilson, his sisters, all those people, they’re looking for him. They don’t know why he helped Steve or refused to sign the Accords, they’re not even sure he’s alive. The more he listens, the more he realizes that they’ve been stonewalled at every turn but his family has been trying to get him a lawyer, a message, anything.

Sam takes a long, shaky breath and lets himself cry for a while, listening to his mother’s voice, letting her faith in him soothe over the places he let break to keep Steve safe.

When he’s done, though, he knows what he needs to do, knows Steve will help him ask for the resources he needs to make a statement to the press without giving himself away.

Sam won’t let his mama get all the way to DC without knowing whether or not he’s alive. And he’s done keeping the US Government’s secrets.

Marvel? Can that count as a fandom? Whichever part of Marvel you want lol, movies, tv show, etc. -starklinqs

Let’s do the MCU!

who i will protect at all costs: Natasha, Sam, and Jane Foster
who deserves better: Poor, poor Wanda. I hope we check in on her at some point before the next Avengers movie just to see if she’s okay
who was killed off too early: QUICKSILVER. I mean, it’s sort of obvious why I suppose – the Marvel Studios folks didn’t want their Quicksilver to have to compete with the X-Men Quicksilver….but still. And he didn’t even get a mention in Civil War. >:(
who i used to hate but now i love: I used to be ‘meh’ on Hawkeye…he was just there…but I love him now. I’m a massive sucker for Fictional Dads
who i used to love but now i hate: Not hate, but Tony slid down in my estimation after the whole ‘let’s throw this untrained teenager into a war zone!’ thing.
who needs to be killed off asap: The MCU is getting so crowded that they’re going to have to start killing off major characters eventually (especially since I’m sure a lot of the actors are getting to the end of their contracts), but I have no idea who
who is unfairly hated: JANE FOSTER, who has committed no crime beyond being a passionate and intelligent woman
who is unfairly loved: …..I don’t know
who needs to sort out their priorities: Goddamn Tony
who needs a hug: After CACW, almost everyone. But, Wanda. Poor Wanda. If she’d even let me hug her…
who needs to get out of their current relationship: The characters seem to be doing a good job of that themselves, heh.
who the writers love: Captain America. Which is good because hopefully they WON’T MAKE HIM HYDRA, MARVEL
who needs a better storyline: I wish Jane was coming back and getting a storyline. :( Also, I want a Black Widow movie and a Falcon movie, neither of which we seem to be getting
who has an amazing redemption arc: Almost Loki
who is hot af: Everyone. All of them. They’re all hot
who belongs in jail: ……..Tony, sorry Tony, but…..
who needs to be revived from the dead: It’s probably a bit late to revive Quicksilver now. But it would be worth it to make Wanda happy!
