This is the best example of how to avoid racial stereotypes while having a black man play a “man ape” character
I was expecting them to do something like this. Man-Ape always was an uncomfortable character for me because, well, he’s a black man named Man-Ape and dresses like a gorilla.
Just using his actual name M’akbu is such an easy way to get around that.

This is one time when changing the source material isn’t just an improvement it’s also REALLY NECESSARY because it would be unbeleivably gross to have a black character in an ape costume literally called “Man Ape”
I’m glad they sensibly decided to just go with having the character go by his real name rather than his supervillain one in the movie and with the changes they made to his costume too
