jack harkness

The Big Thing (Doctor Who spoilers)

So, uh… I was right on one count? But then. But THEN! The appearance of Captain Jack frickin’ Harkness turned out to be merely a red herring for the REAL plot of the episode. My god! There was a past Doctor our Doctor doesn’t even know about. And she was a black woman. This episode is arguably the most important episode Doctor Who has ever produced, and I’m so glad I got to see it live. I’d never even heard of Jo Martin before this episode, but seeing “Jo Martin as The Doctor” in the end credits blew my mind. How’d they keep all this under wraps?! Wow.

Jack’s appearance amounted to little more than a cameo in the end, but I was so thrilled to see him. I think lots of people were. And it was heavily implied that he would be back! Looks like a lot of pieces are moving into place for ONE HELL OF A season finale.

It’s a whole new era for Doctor Who now. A more experimental, more progressive, more diverse (SPACE FOR ALL!!!) era. I haven’t been this excited about the show in ages.

[Also, it’s strange – the first ever episode of Doctor Who was marred by the assassination of JFK. This mini-reboot of sorts is right now marred by the unexpected death of Kobe Bryant. History repeats itself.]

Last minute Who predictions

Twitter is ablaze in speculation about what the Big Thing in this episode is gonna be. Man I haven’t been this excited about a DW episode in ages! So here’s my guesses for returning character:

AMY! Based on that picture I reblogged a few ago. Who knows if it’s even legit? But that’s the one I want the most.

MARTHA! The Judoon are back for this episode and they debuted alongside Martha, so I figure it’s a reasonable guess.

JACK! A lot of people seem to think it might be Jack. I dunno why, but hey! Maybe it’s him.

RIVER! Well, she’s connected to Amy and there’s still that photo to take into consideration… and I really want Thirteen to meet her, and I think lots of other people do too.

Man! This is even more intense than The Masked Singer.

I just needed to reblog this again.

Because jfc, you don’t understand how important this scene is to me.

Or maybe you do!

Because it has Jack openly showing his affection and admiration for two people of different gender in the exact same way, making no difference at all, and neither do Rose nor the Doctor. Zilch. No hesitating, no flinching, no comic relief.

I wish it could be like this more often.

That scene up there is doing everything right, end of story. And while Jack’s sexuality is often made out to be something to smile at, it’s also shown as very natural and Nine was just cool with that, no reason not to be.

Acceptance: You’re doing it right.

This is one of my favorite Jack scenes.  And I love how Rose is more surprised by the kiss than Nine is.

This scene in particular (but all the stuff with Jack and Rose and Nine – OT3 of my heart! – in general) was vitally important to me and how I viewed my own bisexuality. More importantly it was vitally important to my mum, the many many conversations we had about sexuality through the medium of Jack taught her more about the subject in a positive circumstances than anything else did. It laid so much of the vital groundwork that made coming out to my mother much easier than it otherwise would have been. Whatever other flaws the writing of Jack might have had, this stuff will always be precious to me.

Honestly, I’m not sure I’ve been angrier in my fandom life than when someone called this scene, written by and starring a gay man, airing before the watershed at prime time on the BBC “queerbaiting”.

Moffat’s the reason Captain Jack isn’t back

So John Barrowman said that it’s ‘certain egos’ stopping Torchwood coming back. He’s talking about Steven Moffat who thankfully is leaving. Good riddance.

Other stuff John has said:

-around 17:00
-this may change when somebody leaves and someone new and wonderful comes in’

https://youtu.be/knp5sf0rluA
-around 20:40
-‘as long as Steven Moffat is involved, Jack will not be back.
-Then mentioned about Chris Chibnall taking over and taking him for dinner.

Moffat has never had anything to do with Torchwood. Torchwood is RTD’s baby so if it’s not the BBC’s lack of interest in Torchwood why Torchwood hasn’t come back (or Starz) he’s a more likely candidate for why than Moffat.

Why is Moffat often seen as this all powerful figure who just needs to snap his fingers and the BBC does whatever he wants? He doesn’t even have complete creative control over DW, there are many producers and execs above him that things will need to be cleared with. If the BBC wanted to make more Torchwood there is nothing Moffat can say that would stop them. Showrunners just don’t have that kind of power.
