I think I want to say it a little bit with respect to George Lucas: Give the guy a break. You know? He took real risks in the prequels. He thought really hard. They’re very ambitious movies. If you watch the first one, The Phantom Menace, a little bit with the feel of being a kid, I can’t say it’s a great movie, but it has greatness in it. Again, Lucas did some amazing things visually.

I mean it’s not like you know…he made most of it or anything? It’s not like he made himself ill working on the original movie because he wanted everything to be just right, it’s not like he threw aspects of his personal life and his politics into the scripts, it’s not like he worked long and hard on the visuals, it’s not like he’s thought long and hard about Anakin, Darth Vader and redemption and has probably the best words on the subject –
It’s not like he ended up hiring one of his most vocal critics to ensure that the Jar Jar Binks debacle didn’t happen again, because god, he’s so stupid, right? And it’s not like we’re talking here about a guy who threw himself into philanthropy as soon as he got rich and with his wife donated a lot of money to genuinely good causes. Or a guy who, after years of being called a fucking rapist by Star Wars dudebros who can’t tell the difference between movies and violent acts, is still pretty chill about people disliking the prequels…
Like, he’s not perfect or anything – no-one in Hollywood is, no-one anywhere is – but the shit Star Wars fans give him, especially since he’s quite obviously according to all accounts terribly bad at interacting with people and at expressing himself verbally. (Neither of those things are character flaws, incidentally.) God, if that’s what gets you called a dumbass these days…
