Doctor Who: Partners In Crime

First off (since I figure this is what everyone’s gonna be on about first) I actually kind of like that Rose is back early. I dunno, I think I sort of have the potential to like her, if only the production team would quit going on about how great she is and ignoring how awfully she treated Mickey and how randomly bitchy she could be. I like her as a sort of Archtypical-Hero-type (much like the Doctor), the one who everyone half wants to be but knows that being like that would in truth just destroy you. Which is pretty much how she was written in Turn of the Earth. Anyway…

I like Donna. She’s not my favourite but I like her. And I like her grandfather, he was great. Disappointed that no-one made reference to the fact that her dad obviously isn’t around anymore (since Howard Attfield died).

I also liked Penny (her name is a reference to the companion they would have written in if they couldn’t get Catherine Tate, isn’t it?) and thought she was good Companion material…until they went and ruined it at the end with her limping off tied to a chair. (Very funny, ha ha.) I have to say I hate that they’re always doing that- knocking down one person to make the companion seem more special. With Rose it was Mickey and Jackie, with Martha it was her friend Julia, and now with Donna it’s Penny. It just strikes me as really awkward, because it’s like RTD saying “Come on! Be a companion! You don’t want to be one of those ordinary folk who perfectly understandably crack in a stressful situation, just like most human beings would, do you?” Either ordinary is special or ordinary is bad, Russell! You can’t have it both ways! Or maybe I’m just one of those ‘everyone is special!’ freaks, I dunno.

God, I wish I was more eloquent. That’s a part of Doctor Who that really bugs me.

Anyway! That’s about it. I loved the bit with the Doctor talking to himself in his TARDIS and I loved loved loved that he not only admitted treating Martha badly, but said she was brilliant and that she’d changed him. Yay!

And that’s it. See ya next week. :p

So, looking at this icon, I got to wondering (not for the first time) what houses the Doctor Who characters would end up in should they end up, somehow, at Hogwarts.

Mickey, as the icon states, is a Hufflepuff (loyal and underrated…), Rose is a Gryffindor to the core, Martha probably a Ravenclaw (and I reckon her sister would be a Slytherin), Donna…I dunno. Ten is houseless because he’s that cool.

What do you all reckon?

Doctor Who: Voyage Of The Damned

(spoilers, obviously)

Rose: blonde and in another universe
Reinette: blonde and dead
Astrid: blonde and dead in faintly silly way

He’s not got a good track record going there…

Overall, it was alright. It kept me entertained, which is the important part. Basically it was Doctor Who does The Poiseidon Adventure.

Kylie was alright, the rest of the cast was alright (the Black Guy Dies First, although I can’t tell if this is RTD giving a nod to the cliche or just not noticing/caring) the plot is pretty standard, and I, like everyone else, was convinced Davros would be the villain when those wheels squeaked into view.

Oh, and the Series Four trailer was the best part. It has giant wasps!

I dunno what to think, really. It could work if they do it right, and I really hope they do. And Martha will finally get to meet Rose, which will be…interesting. As long as the first thing they do isn’t have a catfight. Although I fear it will be.

The best thing, though, is that presumably Mickey and Jackie will be back too?

Time Crash!

-Five has met LINDA! How and when and why and can someone write about it?

-Time paradoxes for the win. They seem to be popular this year…

-Peter Davison’s name in the credits! Oh, that was good to see.

-‘I know who you are…you’re a fan.’

-‘You were my Doctor.’ Okay, that’s probably Steven Moffat (or, er, David Tennant) talking there.

I shall never again trust a word Russell T ‘no multi-Doctor stories’ Davies says ever again.

Two Who-related links

A lovely interview with Elisabeth Sladen. Some interesting stuff there, I wonder what the ‘down ending’ of School Reunion would have been…

An interesting article about black British actors, making mention of Martha. It’s interesting, and makes some points I’ve never thought about before…I can just about name five British black actors, but I really have to think about it, and virtually all of the ones I can think of were in Who

A Doctor Who/Torchwood related thought

One thing I was never quite able to fathom about the Torchwood finale: did Abadon/the end of days actually happen or was it reset? It was reset for Rhys (i.e. he wasn’t dead anymore) but what about the people killed by Abadon? I should probably watch that episode again. Meh.

But I realised- if it did definately happen in the Whoniverse, and if it’s true that in Earth time Martha’s only with the Doctor for four days or so (it is according to RTD, I think), then the Whoniverse experiences…

-The end of days
-Abadon
-The Royal Hope hospital being transported to the moon
-The Lazarus monster
-Saxon’s rise to power

…..in less than a week. I imagine by Series Four, people will barely look up from their papers when an alien invades. :p

#9: You know that would be awesome.
#11: If anyone wants the original manip for this, it’s lying around somewhere. It’s a bit rubbish, though…
#17: The unseen caption for this icon is ‘Does Francine have to choke a bitch?’
