Fire Lord Ozai

Turns out Daniel Dae Kim has been cast as Ozai in the Avatar live-action series, and that served to remind me of one of my favourite things about the original show. (I have a lot of favourite things about that show, but anyway.) For two whole seasons we don’t see Ozai’s face, only this shadowy figure, and he’s built up and up as this terrible thing and then we finally see him-

-and he’s not a monster at all. In fact he looks noble, wise, attractive even. Heck, he looks more like the archetype of “wise teacher” than even Iroh does really. We the audience know Ozai’s done all these terrible things but it doesn’t show on his face at all. The first time I watched Avatar that completely threw me, I still think it was such a smart way to design a villainous character.

I hope they can pull off a similar thing in live action!

AVATAR Creators No Longer Involved in Live-Action Series — Nerdist

Netflix announced some exciting news in September 2018: the development of a reimagined, live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series. And at the time of the announcement, … 684 more words

AVATAR Creators No Longer Involved in Live-Action Series — Nerdist

So this is VERY disappointing. I was sort of looking forward to this, in a nervous sort of way, but…

Well, this changes things a lot. I hope we find out at some point exactly what’s gone on here.

I suppose now is a good time to post a link to this really good (as far as I know, I don’t actually know of most these folks) fancast I saw on Reddit. In terms of looks alone I love it… (I do think Gemma Chan would make a better Kyoshi than anyone else though. I dunno why.)

Katara – Full Moon Waterbending

Oooh this is great!

danvoltzart:

So, like a lot of you, we’ve been watching some Avatar: The Last Airbender in this house. We powered through all three seasons of the show. And, having never seen every episode before, I can report: it’s very good.

The show is so good, in fact, that I was inspired to create some fan art. (Isn’t that always the measure of how “good” a show is? Okay, maybe not….) Anyway, I hope you enjoy this painting of Katara waterbending.

AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Comes to ANIMAL CROSSING — Nerdist

It’s one of the most iconic opening sequences of all time. “Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother…

AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Comes to ANIMAL CROSSING — Nerdist

I’m a relative newcomer to both Animal Crossing and Avatar, and I have seen this video go around loads of times today, and I have played it each time because IT IS VERY GOOD.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Eyyyy, obviously it’s been years upon years since Avatar first came out (season one was released in TWO THOUSAND AND FIVE, wow) but during lockdown I have finally seen it. The whole thing! And it’s really good. Full of wonderful character development and not-talking-down-to-children and some of the most beautiful animation I’ve ever seen.

I loved Zuko’s redemption arc (I already knew that it was considered one of the best of TV history) but I think my favourite character was Sokka. When he took a level in badass I practically cheered.

I’m watching Legend of Korra now but it’s not quite as engrossing, I have high hopes it will get that way soon though. (I do love that we get to meet everyone’s children, and I also love that it transpires Aang was a flawed parent.)

It’s a good thing there was never a live-action movie! Imagine what they might do to it!
