thor ragnarok spoilers

Thor: Ragnarok is a good and smart film, but if I could change one thing about it it would be this:

It would end with Thor giving up his kingship entirely, since the whole Asgardian system of monarchy has pretty much proved itself to be built on bones, and suggesting the Midgard system instead.

Heimdall becomes the new, elected, Asgardian ruler. (Valkyrie plans to run in the next four years.)

after falling down some stairs I saw Thor: Ragnarok today! I liked it a lot (it was funny as heck) but I have some spoilery quibbles:

-Valkyrie doesn’t actually show any signs of being bisexual, alas. Also, I swear she doesn’t technically get a name beyond ‘a Valkyrie’, which is more of a description really, surely she had a ‘civilian’ name before? Is that the case in the comics too?

-Dr Strange is in this film which somehow I managed to avoid completely. First time I’ve ever seen Cumberbatch in the role… and he’s a total miscast charisma vacuum.

-This movie seemed very much setting up Asgard to renounce their entire system of monarchy (and Thor’s royal title, etc) but that didn’t happen in the end. Which is a shame because they could’ve gotten something very interesting out of that.

-I really hate that they killed off the Warriors Three, and with so little fanfare. Also where on earth was Sif? She didn’t even get a mention.

-Speaking of mysteriously written-out women, Jane did get a very brief mention and that sucks. She deserved better. I thought this film was really good, great characters, great action, great everything! But oh man, without whatever happened behind the scenes with Natalie Portman happening, DAMN WHAT A MOVIE IT COULD HAVE BEEN

(The following is not a quibble:)

-MAN Idris Elba looks good in this movie. The Aragorn look really suits him. In fact now I kinda want someone to reboot the entire Lord of the Rings just so he can play Aragorn.
