Bill and Frank but Ghibli … ish
the last of us
the thing about David is that not only is he evil but also a loser. they’re all in the same apocalypse, in the same winter, but the people in Jackson are fine. the old couple are fine. Ellie managed to find and shoot a deer on her first day in the area, and she’s 14 – but somehow David’s flock are starving and resorting to cannibalism despite having better shots and more experienced hunters.
the point is, for all his preaching about strength and survival he fucking SUCKS as a leader – because he’s not actually trying to make life better for anyone. he’s there for a power trip that was unavailable to him pre-apocalypse and that is why he is terrifying.
it’s about the toxic entitlement of a truly mediocre man who is convinced he’s exceptional. “high value,” if you will.
David is the Elon Musk of the apocalypse
I know I have a few TLOU mutuals at the moment so I’d like to link you to the Bill/Frank fanfic I posted yesterday, How to Transform Something. It contains one headcanon that I really like, the idea that Frank was a teacher pre-apocalypse. I may ramble on about that headcanon later on because I love it so dang much.
Yeah, so I wanna spread the gospel of Frank Was A Teacher! Here is a train of thought.
We know so little about Frank’s life prior to meeting Bill but we do know he’s good with people, calm in stressful situations, and passionate about art. So I really like to think that once upon a time, before the cordeceps, he was an art teacher and an extremely good one. And especially good at handling difficult students and kids with trauma. (He would have been so, so great with Ellie if they’d ever gotten a chance to meet.)
If he was out as a gay man during that period of his life he probably would have found it very difficult. It was legal to fire teachers just for being LGBT back then (and it still was until quite recently, right?) and back in the 00s the “won’t someone think of the children!!1” crowd was somehow even louder. Except, of course, it was teachers like David who posed an actual threat.
(Frank is the anti-David in every single way.)
