I know I have a few TLOU mutuals at the moment so I’d like to link you to the Bill/Frank fanfic I posted yesterday, How to Transform Something. It contains one headcanon that I really like, the idea that Frank was a teacher pre-apocalypse. I may ramble on about that headcanon later on because I love it so dang much.
Yeah, so I wanna spread the gospel of Frank Was A Teacher! Here is a train of thought.
We know so little about Frank’s life prior to meeting Bill but we do know he’s good with people, calm in stressful situations, and passionate about art. So I really like to think that once upon a time, before the cordeceps, he was an art teacher and an extremely good one. And especially good at handling difficult students and kids with trauma. (He would have been so, so great with Ellie if they’d ever gotten a chance to meet.)
If he was out as a gay man during that period of his life he probably would have found it very difficult. It was legal to fire teachers just for being LGBT back then (and it still was until quite recently, right?) and back in the 00s the “won’t someone think of the children!!1” crowd was somehow even louder. Except, of course, it was teachers like David who posed an actual threat.

Title: How To Transform Something Fandom: The Last of Us Summary: Bill writes a note. Frank was never supposed to see it. Notes: An attempt to combine the TV show with a certain aspect of the game.
“Frank is attuned to details from the moment he arrives, whether it’s a crack about Arby’s lack of free lunches or the antique piano in Bill’s living room. His paintings, which fill the walls ever more vibrantly as the years pass, are detailed depictions of flowers, of Bill’s eyes, of the world around him. He cultivates plants for joy and pleasure rather than sustenance — flowers and strawberries thrive under Frank’s careful and attentive hand. Frank shows his love for the world, and hangs onto his joyous humanity, by paying attention to its details.”
