Last Man on Earth: How Jason Sudeikis Made His Return

tlmoedaily:

The writer’s room interview for 4×12 – 4×15 is here and it’s a doozy! My fave bits:

On families:

Out of necessity our characters are creating their own types of specific
bonds in order to have the lives they want, i.e., Todd having a baby
with Erica but staying with Melissa who doesn’t really want to be
involved beyond just being happy for Todd. So, the way this all plays
out could touch on lots of questions about families and the attachments
we form.

On Mike’s return:

When it came up, the room started pitching ideas as to what his return might entail, and with Will on board, it was decided
that Mike would return around episode 14 or 15.  We kept that in mind
as the season came together, and as the season unfolds to its finale, I
think he’s utilized in an interesting way. Hopefully people who were
Team Mike’s Dead will be glad he’s not by the end.

On not doing a Gail/Erica/Mike love triangle:

Ultimately, we all felt like Erica and Gail are in love, and that’s not
going to change because some person Erica kissed one time (through a
medical bubble) came back.  Pranks aside, Mike can usually be trusted to
act like an adult when it comes to interpersonal stuff.

On the prospect of another Mike standalone episode:

We all love the stand-alone flashback episodes. But they’re pricey to
do, and in this case it didn’t really seem necessary – at least right
now.

On those parallel shots that everyone noticed:

Payman [Benz] and I thought it would be cool to mimic the shots of Mike
looking out into space when he was in the space station. Thanks for
noticing! Loneliness is definitely something he’s dealing with, even now
when he’s among people again.

On whether Mike’s prank story was true or not:

That story was a lot longer than what ended up in the final cut, and I
want every part of it to be true. But it’s not. Or is it???? For real, I
can’t tell you.

I love these looks into the writers room, and I especially love that they respect the Gail/Erica relationship as much as we all do. (It’s a weight off my mind, yeah?)

Some vague theories about where TLMOE may be going (please someone talk about this show with me)

  • I think half of Mike’s story in the promo clip actually is true and he might well have actually run into some scientists and ended up experimented on. He also has a fancy science-y van with him so where did he get that from?
  • In the episode after next “a thermal heat detector (the one in the van I guess) reveals a potential sign of life” so is this a whole lotta people? But “Tandy doesn’t want the group to split up to go investigate” and there must be a good reason for that because why wouldn’t you investigate? Because he’s learned from Mike that these people have ill intent?
  • The press release for 4×17 is really cagey but
“morbid discoveries” definitely doesn’t point to anything good
  • Is “what they actually find” a bigger group of people, scientists, doctors, all the people they actually need to restart the world properly, but they’re ruthless Mike-experimenters-upon?

I do wonder – you’re gonna have to bear with me here I’m on a roll – if the season finale (possibly the series finale) might come down to “what would you rather have, a world that’s outwardly ideal but hiding hidden rot, or a world filled with flawed, gross and messy people who happen to be your family?” And that’s possibly my favourite trope ever (just look at my love for GOTG 2!) so…

I don’t know. I know TLMOE is a comedy first and foremost (and a gleefully, relentlessly, surprisingly non-offensively lowbrow one) and I suspect if I was foolish enough to post this on Reddit I’d be bombarded with a hundred Lol It’s Not That Deep comments, but it… sometimes is that deep, right? I mean, this is a comedy built on a million bodybags. Anyway, I suppose I’ll wait it out. (Please someone talk about this show with me)

Hm

I have absolutely no idea about anything anymore beyond 1) the bunker people are not carrying guns but they look creepy 2) Mike is exhibiting signs of what almost appears to be PTSD* and 3) Will Forte did like my tweet about Mike’s original story being true after all, so

(*brief fistbump of solidarity)

last man on earth

I knew as soon as the official Facebook page posted this-

…that a vault full of people would be involved. Clever! (s’ Fallout!)

That last shot was MAGNIFICENTLY creepy, and I kinda suspect I’m barking up the wrong tree at this point but: Mike told that possibly-fake story about a hatch, and here’s a hatch. Here’s people, too! Lots of people! And this isn’t even the season finale! I love this show so much, and I am so desperate for it to not be cancelled, it clearly has a lot more stories to tell
