A Farewell to the Under-Appreciated Last Man on Earth
My Last Man on Earth article is up on The Mary Sue! Slowly, I’m coming to terms with losing it. But I’m still sad.

i’ve seen a few other people point this out but can we just talk about the one thing all the shows fox cancelled had in common? can we just talk about the fact that brooklyn 99, last man on earth, lucifer and the exorcist all had LGBT characters in the MAIN cast. in the case of lucifer, the MALE LEAD was OPENLY bisexual. and they ALL got cancelled at the same time?
a petition to save last man on earth, because losing erica/gail to tim fucking allen’s trump show still disgusts me: https://www.change.org/p/save-the-last-man-on-earth-3cb4be73-62d2-490b-acfd-efa9c56af82b

I won’t push my luck after they saved Brooklyn Nine Nine, but I can dream, right?
For the record, NBC and Brooklyn Nine Nine’s production company are owned by the same folks.
But not TLMOE’s, right? :(
No, sorry, owned by Fox.
Buuuuut… Fox also part-owns Hulu, right? Maybe they could pick it up?
*clinging to any desperate hope*
Last Man On Earth
I cannot believe Fox cancelled Last Man On Earth I’m so heartbroken. It never got the credit it deserved, but it’s so unique and smart and incredibly well done. It has so much representation too. The two main characters are autistic, there’s lots of bisexual characters, a gay character, there’s more girl characters than guys, and there’s a polyamorous relationship. It has the best found family story of anything I’ve ever seen.
The relationships between all the characters are so special and unique. It has guy friends platonically cuddling and kissing each other. The main character gets his eyebrows shaved off and he has no problem wearing fake eyebrows for his girlfriend because she has a hard time reading emotions without them. There’s tons of examples of the characters making little changes like that to occomadate each other’s quirks and support each other.
It has an incredibly interesting plot that’s simultaneously heart breaking and absolutely hilarious. I’ve never seen a show that makes me go from crying to laughing so quickly and so frequently. It has the best redemption arc for a character that I’ve ever seen. There’s no show quite like it and I don’t think there ever will be. It will be so devestating if we never get to see how this story wraps up.
I’m not sure what to do to help it get picked up by another channel but the more people protest it the better chance they have. Please support this fantastic show.

Alright, the worst happened and Last Man on Earth is gone. (Brooklyn 99 is also gone. It’s been that sort of week.)
But, just like the heroes of the show, we shouldn’t give up hope just yet! Fan campaigns can save shows, that’s what almost certainly gonna happen with B99! So here’s some ideas to for what you can do to help resurrect TLMOE for at least long enough to give everyone (both characters AND actors!) the ending and closure they deserve:
- Leave a message for Hulu! (You need an account I think, but-) Lots of fans for both cancelled Fox shows are doing the same! Vote and comment!
- Apparently you can even call Hulu directly if you’re into phone calls?
- Cover two bases and leave a message for Netflix too, again urging them to pick up the show!
- It goes without saying that you can also tweet to Hulu and Netflix
- There’s a petition going around
- Actually there’s two petitions going around!
It’s not quite over! C’mon everyone!
The Last Man on Earth Ended Perfectly, Even With a Cliffhanger
In the moments right before the finale cliffhanger, the gang is on their way to Cancun when Tandy sees an actual living dog in the distance — they hadn’t seen one in years — inspiring him to stop their train on wheels. He makes a plea to the gang: They should stay where they are. Who cares if it’s in the middle of nowhere? Wherever they go will just be another beachfront covered in dead bodies. All these characters have grown over the time of the show, but in that moment, they find inside themselves the most difficult thing of all — acceptance. True acceptance that this is their life. It’s a life filled with love and impending menace, where nothing lasts. Not resources or good times or life or TV shows. All you can do is appreciate them while they’re here.
See, I do in a way agree with this. “Good news, bad news, who can say? It all depends on where the story ends.” The swift cancellation makes Last Man on Earth’s ending into almost a Lady and the Tiger-esque one: is the gasmask army good or bad? Depends what you actually believe about good and bad. But all the same –
– there’s still so many loose ends, like Mike’s happiness and the two pregnancies and even little character details like Gail’s son. It could’ve ended so much worse, but it could also have ended so much better.
