What do you think of… River? -taiey

I think a lot of River!

I admit I didn’t always. Back when she had only one appearance to her name in 2008-ish, my thoughts on her were basically “…she’s cool, I guess?” I didn’t really have much of an opinion on her. But then she came back to the show, which I assumed would never happen! And they developed her and her backstory, which I also assumed would never happen!

River is a very flawed (interestingly flawed) person but we see her learn and grow a lot – we just see it in the wrong order due to time travel – and it infuriates me when people say she’s just the love interest, just there for the male audience to wank over etc*, because she has her own arc and own personality and she’s basically a female Jack Harkness? Who everyone (rightly) loves? But anyway. I’m looking really really forward to seeing her at Christmas.

*This is extra galling because Doctor Who is a children’s show and River is, despite the occasional flirty line, a children’s character

s’like, a lot of the dialogue is bland at best (apart from the handful of REALLY GOOD lines in there) but as a story told through visuals and music the prequels are incredible. I know that’s a really unpopular opinion, but…meep. And I love that the visuals tie into the OT so well, with shots being mirrored constantly. I keep meaning to do a nice long gifset series about that…

ANYWAY I JUST LOVE STAR WARS SO MUCH, EVERY LAST BIT OF IT, it’s like this gorgeous modern mythology/sandbox and people are constantly adapting it and expanding on it (Star Wars Shakespeare is a thing!) and I love that too, I hope that in the far future scholars will fiercely be debating questions like “did Padme die of her broken heart or did Anakin’s force choke her?” or “were Jedi Padawans basically just trained child soldiers?” that sort of thing, just like we discuss old myths now

Can the fourth Doctor Who colour also have Martha in it maybe? -taiey

She’s in Orange! But not in Blue, which is the next one. I’ve been trying to get in more of the characters who weren’t in the Top Six Companions (Donna, Rose…) because I do like them even if they’re not The Faves

taiey replied to your post: Why I don’t like the Sexy Lamp Test

(Doesn’t one of them kill Joe? And they do the human shield thing, and even just reloading the guns… anyway.)

Nah, Furiosa kills Joe. I did forget about the human shield bit, but I’d argue that’s more of a character beat than a plot one…

This isn’t meant to slight the Wives, though! Just to point out that characters can be almost entirely acted upon throughout their stories rather than actually act and still be great, important characters.

taiey replied to your post: still got it

I’ve never played anything like that, have you sincerely still got it or sarcastically?

Slightly sarcastically, in that getting a gem on the first level is not that much of an achievement, but it’s still nice to be able to play it!
