A female character is being lied to in the grossest way possible, and is in a position where she’s unwittingly having sex with someone she would never have consented to have sex with if she knew the truth?

BUT WE’RE GROSS PERVERTS IF WE THINK THAT’S RAPE

So, I went from being upset about things in the latest Spider-Man comics, to being furious at the response from editorial.

Spoilers everywhere in the linked piece.

Also, be aware that the things I’ve tagged here are triggers for the piece I’ve written.
Please don’t go if it may upset you.

Amazing Spider-Man 700, Avenging Spider-Man 15.1, and the handling of sexual consent in comics.

Jesus Christ, someone actually said that? And believed it?

That’s almost as bad as the ol’ “I’m not racist, you’re racist for bringing it up!” argument.

“Rating women on their attractiveness is wrong, but the internet is all about having fun so I’m going to do it anyway. Shailene Woodley is a 6, she’s not as pretty as Emma Stone, and Kristen Stewart doesn’t smile even though she’s rich, what’s with that.

Shailene Woodley, who hasn’t even appeared in costume yet, clearly isn’t suitable for this role no-one has seen her play.”

Well, that’s unsettling.

One good thing about One More Day (the one good thing about One More Day) is it means JMS’s terrible erotic fanfic is no longer canon. On the other hand, blaming Gwen for that spectactularly out of character moment and saying she’s “tainted” is kind of misogynistic. I mean, would anyone describe Peter as “tainted” because he sold his marriage to the Devil? (As opposed to calling the series tainted, which is absolutely true.)

Unfortunately, I think it is still canon, because Gwen and Norman’s kids are still around. I heard someone behind the scenes at Marvel attempted to de-canon it but no go…

(It’s so misogynistic, I like to think that little ‘No’ in the corner is the image itself being appalled at that viewpoint.)
