One theory that I liked is the reason Yondu has a Southern accent is because Peter sees him as a father figure and thus his translator added the accent like his mom had.

Plus it’s adorable to imagine this gruff, mean, killer biker being taken care of by sassy, but sweet (but also mama bear) Missouri born little mother and watching said biker interact with a toddler is also too fucking cute okay!
