Thanks to the ever-astounding @finniestoncrane, I will be sharing with y’all some of my favorite pieces of cinema in no particular order. And yes, they are cinema.

Rules: post 10 of your favorite movies and tag 10 people.

Captain Marvel (2019) – The film that made me realize why guys like to watch superhero movies so much. I’ve never felt more powerful.

Curious George (2006) – For the era in which it was made, this movie has some of the best animation I’ve ever seen. Also, Jack Johnson popped off on the album for the film.

The Batman (2022) – I feel as though I’m contractually obligated to include this one. It’s my current comfort movie, and, unlike most films, I can watch it over and over.

Happy Feet (2006) – I already know I’m going to get clowned for this one, but I don’t care. I don’t even like musicals, but I like penguins, stories of self-discovery, and Boogie Wonderland.

The Adventures of Tintin (2011) – This was the first movie I watched, not as a child, but as a partially fully sentient being all my own, and thought “that was a whole ass movie”.

Lilo and Stitch (2002) – This one never gets old. Like, I could watch this movie for the rest of my life and still find joy in it. That opening song, He Mele No Lilo, it inspires something in my heart.

The Avengers (2012) – A classic. Whenever I see that it’s on, I stop, smile, and think fondly on the joy that was. Interpret that as you will.

Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) – One of my first Ghibli films, and my favorite one without a doubt. It never ceases to amaze and makes me cry when I go back and watch it.

Doctor Strange (2016) – This movie was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Also, I love wizards.

The Secret of Kells (2009) – I found this movie on accident, but I was never the same afterwards. Like I can’t describe it. Something inside me changed.

@rallazarthemagnificent @eagleflightdraws @hallowsden @heartsick-honeybee @vellamare @fallingpapersnow @finzphoenix @sillysamta

As always, no pressure to participate. Just thought it would be fun šŸ’™

Top 10 movies, hm? I can do that! Can’t say the same for tagging 10 people though… Also, apologies for cursing ahead of time. Idk how to translate my thoughts of the movies without cursing, tbh.

  1. Pokemon: The Rise of Darkrai – I fucking love this movie! I watched it multiple times growing up and have always loved it each time. I remember crying so hard the first time around and whenever I hear Oracion play, I will start bawling. Just- this movie will always have a special place in my heart (I would also like to say thank you, Ash Ketchum, for giving me the childhood memories I have now. Gonna miss you and Pikachu.)
  2. Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse – FUCKING LOVE THE DESIGN, AESTHETICS, AND GRAPHICS- JUST- HOLY SHIT MAN! DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE PLOT AND ALL THE DYNAMICS- AND THE MEMES! Definitely looking forward to watching the sequel!
  3. Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of The Sith – ESPECIALLY AFTER SEEING WHAT HAPPENED IN THE CLONE WARS TV SHOW- THE BETRAYAL OF THE CLONES HURT- BUT THE BATTLE BETWEEN ANAKIN AND OBI-WAN? MAN, THAT WAS GREAT YET HEART-WRENCHING! (Also, sequel trilogy? What are you talking about? All I know is the Prequels and the originals- not to mention the shows-)
  4. James Cameron Avatar – I only just watched it a few months ago (Still haven’t watched Way of Water yet-) and DEAR GOODNESS, EVERYTHING’S BEAUTIFUL- just- the fact that it was made in 2009 especially is surprising! The world-building is what made me fall in love with the movie, in all honesty.
  5. Harry Potter: The Goblet of Fire – I hate JK Rowling and do not support her whatsoever. But I do remember watching the Harry Potter movies and enjoying it, which lead to me reading the books (and fanfics… So much fanfics…), but out of all the movies, it was the Goblet of Fire that ended up being my favorite. A sort of clear transition to how things are getting even more sirius (I had to ok-) and that this isn’t a mere fairytale fantasy adventure anymore of sorts. Idk, I just loved Goblet of Fire a lot.
  6. John Wick – Do I really need to explain why I love this movie?
  7. Train to Busan – ONE OF THE BEST ZOMBIE MOVIES OUT THERE- THE ENDING MADE ME CRY EVERYTIME I WATCHED IT (I watched the original with subtitles. Hits more then the dub) Definitely managed to give a new twist to Zombie Movies imo
  8. House of Wax (2005) – Look, idk why I love this movie- well, ok, that’s a lie. The Sinclair Brothers I find rather compelling. Leaving it at that, tbh
  9. Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero – Aside from Scarecrow and Riddler, Mr. Freeze is one of my favorite rogues. Man needs all the hugs. Enough said.
  10. Can… Can I put The Owl House Season 3 on this list? Or at the very least Gravity Falls Weirdmageddon episodes? No? Well, TOO BAD! I CONSIDER THEM MOVIES AND THEY ARE AMAZING AND JUST- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA XD

… Hope you don’t mind (Also, apologies for the ping-)

These are in no particular order because I can’t chose besides narrowing it down to 10

  1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (The Extended Edition) – The Hobbit movies are my go to movies when I’m looking for something to watch, and the first one is my favorite. Bilbo when the dwarves invade his house is the biggest mood.
  2. The Batman – I saw this 4(?) times in theaters and fell in love. I’ve watched it countless times since then, and I have 3 of the posters from my local theater. I was so hyped for this movie because Riddler is my favorite rogue and it did not disappoint.
  3. Tangled – My favorite Disney movie. The Kingdom Dance is the best part of the movie hands down. My first proper cosplay was Rapunzel.
  4. Barbie as The Princess And The Pauper – I watched this all the time as a kid; I was Erika and my sister was Anneliese. I’m actually making Erika’s dress right now. This movie means so much to me. I’ve enjoyed introducing my little sister (3 y/o) to it.
  5. Ponyo – A movie I saw trailers for countless times as a kid but only got around to watching it last summer. I like the English dub best because Liam Neeson as Fujimoto is šŸ˜™šŸ‘Œ.
  6. Spider-Man: No Way Home – Saw this in theaters. I’d never seen The Amazing Spider-Man movies so I got so excited when the Lizard showed up because I loved him in Spider-Man TAS. The interaction between Doc Ock and Peter 2 makes me cry every time I watch it. I want a Batman movie like this; not with the multiverse shenanigans necessarily, but a movie where he’s allowed to actually help some of the Rogues.
  7. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – Like The Hobbit, LotR is a comfort series and the beginning of the journey is my favorite.
  8. Newsies (1992) – From Jack’s dance break in “Santa Fe” to Davey trying to do the choreography in “Seize The Day” this movie makes my heart happy. And Davey and Jack are so in love. Also “High Times, Hard Times” is a bop and did not deserve to be nominated for Worst Song.
  9. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish – I’ve only seen it once, but I loved it so much.
  10. Kiki’s Delivery Service – I’d marry Osono. Also it’s just a cute movie.

A Movie Meme

(image from here)

I found this prompt meme at coffee, classics, & craziness and I’m joining in! Yay!

Rules:

#1 Use a different movie for each prompt
#2 Add photos and/or explanations of how your choices fit the prompts
#3 Tag a few friends to play along

Let’s see what we got.

1. A Partridge in a Pear Tree ā€” movie that involves agriculture

OH NO. Okay… Hmm. WAIT! My husband just HANDED ME the most obvious answer. The Martian, a space movie which I love, all about a guy who survives on Mars by growing potatoes. (It’s much, much more interesting than I make it sound there.)

Home to a really good line about humanity and the world:

“Every human being has a basic instinct: to help each other out. If a hiker gets lost in the mountains, people will coordinate a search. If a train crashes, people will line up to give blood. If an earthquake levels a city, people all over the world will send emergency supplies. This is so fundamentally human that it’s found in every culture without exception. Yes, there are assholes who just don’t care, but they’re massively outnumbered by the people who do.”

2. Turtledoves ā€” movie about a long-lasting relationship

Back in 2007 this movie ripped my heart out, stamped on it, put it back in, then kicked it upwards through my brain and out my head.

I speak of course of Atonement, the tale of a doomed romance and some beautiful, beautiful dresses. In the end, Robbie and Cecilia can’t survive World War II or the British class system. (Yeah, the British class system, not Briony, is the villain of this story.) But Briony ensures via her writing that they have a long-lasting relationship anyway, and I cry.

3. French Hens ā€” movie that takes place in France

Okay, it’s a toss-up between two movies here, both based on works by Victor Hugo: Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables. And… despite the fact that it has virtually nothing at all to do with the book… I think Hunchback juuuust takes it, because it’s a gorgeous, interesting, progressive-for-Disney film, and I love it.

I can’t even choose one shot from this movie so just have the opening one. And hey! The titular church didn’t burn down this year! It’s still there!

4. Calling Birds ā€” movie where people talk on the phone

Okay, I’m gonna stretch the definition of “phone” a bit here and show you something from The Phantom Menace:

Qui-Gon’s space phone (commlink, sorry) is actually a Gillette Ladies Sensor Excel Razor, or a close approximation of. THIS MOVIE COST 115 MILLION DOLLARS. I love it.

5. Golden Rings ā€” movie with multiple romances

There could only ever be one choice here.

I’m sorry I knoooooow Love Actually probably isn’t really all that great as a movie and it’s so cheesy and corny and up-itself but I love it. It’s like a warm Christmas hug. (And I don’t even really like Christmas, so…)

6. Geese A-laying ā€” movie with a birth or that features babies

So before there was Baby Yoda, there was this equally adorable fella:

And I think his presence is enough to qualify Guardians of the Galaxy 2 as a film that features babies. No births though, unless you count the birth of a god or the birthing chamber stuff on the gold planet or various “rebirths” of characters. Wait… GOTG2 is surprisingly birth-metaphors-heavy actually. Who knew.

7. Swans A-swimming ā€” movie where someone goes swimming

Okay, so maybe this isn’t so much “someone goes swimming” as it is “someone tries to swim and nearly drowns” but…

I can still remember the music from that bit in Fellowship of the Ring after all this time. My god, the last quarter of that movie kicks all kind of ass and tramples on my feelings, I love it so.

ā€œI made a promise, Mr. Frodo. A promise. Donā€™t you leave him, Samwise Gamgee. And I donā€™t mean to. I donā€™t mean to.ā€

8. Maids A-milking ā€” movie with cows

Okay, this can only be Children of Men. (A film that I very nearly put at #6.) Why? At the film’s pivotal moment we get this beautiful, striking scene featuring a whole lotta cows.

I think it’s meant to be reminiscent of Mary in the manger. And I love it so much. Please watch Children of Men, it’s so harrowing but so good, it’s amazing, I promise.

9. Ladies Dancing ā€” movie with a dance scene

AM I GONNA DO IT? YEAH I’M GONNA DO IT. I’m gonna put Spider-Man 3 in here. Yes, that one.

But not for that dance scene… or even that one. You know the much-derided ones I mean. The one I like is this one:

Harry Osborn (in his various incarnations) is my Second Favourite Fictional Character Of All Time, and Mary Jane is pretty high up the list as well, so it was nice to see them have a moment of happiness before one of them dies. Honestly, that’s it. (I unapologetically love Spider-Man 3, even if only for Harry. I admit it. I’m sorry. No wait, no I’m not.)

10. Lords A-leaping ā€” movie about athletes

Aw dang… I’m not good at this genre. But I do really like Noel Clarke’s Fast Girls and no-one else seems to have seen it, so I’m putting it here. I really need to watch it again actually. It suffers from Unnecessary Forced Heterosexual Romance In An Almost All-Woman Film Syndrome but eh, what doesn’t.

(Yeah, the Noel Clarke from Doctor Who. And yes, that is a pre-mega-fame Lily James.)

11. Pipers Piping ā€” movie with someone playing a musical instrument

Wait, NOW I can get Les Miserables in here. During the very start of the “Drink With Me” scene Grantaire (my First Favourite Fictional Character of all time) starts running his hands over a broken piano.

It doesn’t make any sound of course, but that’s so much more poignant than if it had.

12. Drummers Drumming ā€” movie with characters in the military

I don’t really get to go to the cinema much these days but one film I did see this year was Tolkien, which kinda delves in a little into how Tolkien’s experiences in the First World War inspired his writings.

It didn’t get very good reviews, to my surprise, and I suppose the dispute with Tolkien’s descendants definitely didn’t help, but I liked it. It definitely didn’t shy away when depicting the horrors of World War I.

And that’s that…

You should definitely do this meme if you want to! In fact, please do!

@xingshining challenged me to list my ten favourite movies as gifs! But alas the tumblr gif system Does Not Work for me, it doesnā€™t load properly no matter what I do. So here are ten favourite movies as gifs that I myself made!

(And I tag anyone who wants to do it!)

tagged by @starklinqs a couplea days ago to list
6 films You Can Watch Anytime! (Which strikes me as significantly different to 6 *favourite* films, but OH MAN THIS IS STILL HARD TO NARROW DOWN)

1) The Producers (1968) aka ā€œthis is how you ACTUALLY do satireā€. Its sexism is problematic – actually itā€™s a total pain – but itā€™s still my favourite film of all time I think.

2) The Emperorā€™s New Groove, which hopefully needs no explanation, I put it on whenever I need a good laugh

3) Apollo 13, there is pretty much nothing I donā€™t love about this movie

4) Ghostbusters (2016) what a god damn awesome movie full of funny ladies

5) Mad Max Fury Road, god itā€™s a feast for the eyes ON TOP OF all the other amazing things about it

I tag whoever wants to do it! :)

@taiey tagged me to list 10 favourite female characters! Okay, here goes, in no order!

  1. Amy Pond (Doctor Who)
  2. Martha Jones (Doctor Who)
  3. Mary Jane Watson (Spider-Man)
  4. Ursula Ditkovich (Spider-Man Trilogy)
  5. Briony Tallis (Atonement)
  6. Eowyn (The Lord of the Rings)
  7. Amy Santiago (Brooklyn 99)
  8. Sansa Stark (Game of Thrones)
  9. Beru Lars (Star Wars)
  10. Marceline (Adventure Time)

I tag anyone who wants to do it!

Ooh, I was tagged by youngbelle!

1. Ninjas or robots? ROBOTS please

2. Describe your happy place. Somewhere with my friends and family around that also had ice cream, chocolate and sun. Disneyworld maybe. Letā€™s say Disneyworld

3. Coffee or tea? I hate both. I am a bad Brit

4. Would you go to the movies alone? ABSOLUTELY, I donā€™t understand the stigma against it

5. What superpower would you have? The ability to stop time would be great for a while but I suspect itā€™d drive you mad. Iā€™ll take force-fields! That covers invisibility and phasing and flying and all sorts, that sounds fun.

I need to work on my Photoshop colouring so Iā€™m going to make my own little meme, yay. I reckon Iā€™m gonna make picspams/gifsets ooooof: (note that ā€˜showā€™ covers movies as well)

-Show/character/ship/episode + emotions
-Show/character/ship/episode + negative space
-Show/character/ship/episode + rainbow
-Show/character/ship/episode + faceless
-Show/character/ship/episode + eight favourite caps
-Show/character/ship/episode + all one colour (give me a colour!)
-Character + favourite oufits
-Character + best moments
-Show + underappreciated character or characters
-Show + scenery and objects

Give me suggestions if you would! My askbox is here! Otherwise I will just think up my own stuff, but thatā€™s not as fun
