(Incidentally, just because this genuinely surprised the hell out of me: none of the news articles about this referred to her as “George Lucas’s wife”)
The George Lucas Family Foundation have donated a further $10m to USC’s School Of Cinematic Arts bring their total donation to $20m…
The fund is designed to help underrepresented communities qualify for financial support and gain access to undergrad and graduate programs at USC. The successful students are known as either George Lucas Scholars of Melody Hobson Scholars.
Michael Renov, the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs said –
“We are grateful that Mellody Hobson and George Lucas continue to provide visionary leadership on issues of diversity in our field. This endowed fund allows us to recruit storytellers whose voices are underrepresented in cinematic media, and whose inclusion benefits all of us.” – Michael Renov
I know this isn’t exactly Star Wars news, but I wanted to reming everyone that the guy that gave us this thing we love, is an incredibly generous individual who does a tremendous amount to good work with the resources Star Wars has afforded him.
janellemonaeTHE FORCE IS WITH #HiddenFigures🚀 Last night my hero and shero hosted a private screening of HiddenFigures🚀 . I can’t quite describe to you in words how it felt to hear the creator of Star Wars (a huge inspiration to me and my work) and Ms. Force herself genuinely gosh about this film and its’ importance. Thank you George Lucas, Mellody Hobson, and Jeffrey Katzenberg (who is nothing short of amazing for hosting as well) for being champions of this film and these brilliant hidden figures! I will forever cherish last night. 🔲🖤 #HiddenFigures🚀 is out everywhere Friday JAN 6th !! Let’s make it number 1 over Star Wars ;-)
Early one morning during the crisis, global markets were plunging. Hobson doesn’t usually focus on day-to-day fluctuations, but this day she was staring at the TV, hyperventilating. She and Lucas always talk at 7:30 A.M. Chicago time when they’re in different cities. “George said, ‘What do you know better than anyone else because you live in Chicago?’ ” she recalls. “I said, ‘George, I have no idea. I’m not interested in mind games.’ He said, ‘The one thing you have in Chicago is snowstorms. What do you know about snowstorms? In a snowstorm, when you’re trying to get from one place to another place, you never look up at the storm. You watch your feet. If you look up at the storm you will fall.’ ” Hobson says, “I went to work, and thought, We must stay focused and watch our feet. We must just do the work.”
As my husband [and Yoda] says, ‘Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering’ and so I don’t want to be on that dark side. I want to search for the light. I feel sad, deeply sad, about this rhetoric and deeply disappointed. There was a political correctness within our society but now people just say anything. I believe in civility, inclusion and diversity. I believe that everybody can contribute. I don’t believe in labelling and stereotypes. These things are the antithesis of what I believe in and go against everything I love in America. And I do love America.
