Star Wars can write more personality into a robot that talks in beeps than Doctor Who can write into a female character.

BB-8: super cute, trusting?, dutiful???

River Song: freedom incarnate, intelligent, adventurous, powerful, impossible to restrain, damaged and healing, witty, brave, likes wine, dramatic, always reckless but more responsible as she ages, gains power from trust, openly emotional in youth but hides her pain later, technologically savvy, historically knowledgeable, learns compassion, ruthless in need, wreathed in stories, wise.

Amy Pond: full of faith, fear of abandonment, brittle and abrasive young, commitment issues, bravado, learns how to live an ordinary life, learns social skills, artistic, snarky, enjoys history, violent until she decides to not be, devoted in love, decent cook, defines her reality by her memories, psychically powerful, perceptive, difficulty functioning under extreme emotional stress, fairy-tale to story-teller.

Clara Oswald: adorable, terrifying, good with kids, sentimental, thirst for travel initially buried under sensible responsibility, strengthening impulsivity, eventually embraces her bossy-control-freak abilities, fantastic liar, lies to project normality while afraid of her adventure-addiction, eventually embraces adventure-addiction, strong conventional streak young, likes tea, aspiring story-book heroine, successfully rewrites herself as heroine.

um ok

Rose: allowed to be deeply selfish, for better or for worse, in a way that female characters often aren’t; immature but loving; wears her emotions on her sleeve, gains a love of adventure and danger; is always compassionate to those she meets who are of lower social status (see: Raffolo, Gwyneth, the Ood) because she knows how that feels; warm and friendly

Martha: very intelligent and dedicated; gives a lot of herself even in situations where this is unhealthy for her; is the glue that holds her family together; is far more forgiving than she needs to be (Joan did not deserve her magnanimity); is not afraid to call people out on racism; learns to take control of her life

Donna: puts on a mask of bravado but has no self-esteem whatsoever due to her emotionally abusive mother; shouts at the world and at herself; hates injustice and cruelty; is not afraid to tell people what she thinks; loves her grandfather and even her mother; takes up space

My Experience with Doctor Who and Why Martha Jones is the Best

blackscifimatters:

My first episode of Doctor Who was “Bad Wolf”. It was on the Sci-Fi Channel and I only caught the beginning when Crosbie is voted out of the house. I was intrigued because here were these white people crying over the departure of a black woman. I forgot about it for a long time until I saw “Gridlock”. I can write an entire post about that episode. I then went searching for season 3 and fell in love with Martha Jones.

Martha Jones is the best companion of the new era because she was the most human. All of the other companions lost their humanity in some way but not Martha Jones. Martha Jones who saved the universe by walking through a dying Earth. Martha Jones whose first introduction to the Doctor was random and written off as unimportant (the tie). Martha Jones who had to get a job in order to support the Doctor when the weeping angels got to them. Martha Jones whose family is the only family to really suffer the effects of being associated with the Doctor. Martha Jones who was capable yet trusted the Doctor to save the day. Martha Jones who is the only companion who faces real-world consequences if she travels to the wrong time period. Martha Jones who walked away as a better person.

All the other companions had these huge conspiracies around them. Rose and Bad Wolf. Donn and Doctor/Donna. Amy and at least the Pandorica and River. Clare and her entire life. But the way in which the Doctor’s enemies used Martha was the most human and the most long-lasting. Martha had the weight of the universe on her shoulders but the Master had her family and that was all that mattered.

And we sometimes got to see how Martha Jones tried to piece her life back together. (I enjoyed her time on Torchwood better than series 4 Doctor Who) Martha Jones is the companion who decided to live her life.

THIS IS A WOMAN

I love this scene so much.

Because until this scene, Martha has very much pushed her family away and kept quiet to them about what she was actually doing to travel with the Doctor. She has ignored attempts of her mother to talk to her about it and actively lied to her family. The Doctor never outright told her to do so, but it was still clear to her that she shouldn’t.

And now it’s turning back on her family, it’s actively endangering them and Martha knows and she is furious. So when the Doctor tells her to keep quiet, when he shows that he is willing to sacrifice her family’s safety for their safety, Martha very much tells him to fuck off. She’s putting her family’s safety first, she’s actively choosing them over the Doctor and I love it.
