So the most interesting thing in this TASM commentary to me so far is that we get told what Gwen’s mother does for a living? Apparently, she’s a big-name lawyer, which explains why the Stacys live in such a fancy apartment.
That reminds me of when that doorman viral scene came out and people were making a big deal of how a police officer could afford a place in that area, and now that I think about it, at no point did anyone consider that maybe it was Helen Stacy who was the one behind why they’d live there.
Interesting.
…Okay, I really like that, especially as Gwen’s mother is never even named in the comics (…right?) let alone given a career!
I just really like the extended Stacy family and want to write about them, so thanks for this tidbit. :D
You know, the thing about the “Gwen fell in love with Peter while Mary Jane fell in love with Spider-Man” quote…It doesn’t make any sense! Because Peter is Spider-Man, they’re the same person!
So what I like to think it really means is, “Gwen loved everything about Peter but what she loved the most was his kind nature and intelligence. Mary Jane loved everything about Peter but what she loved the most was his selfless nature and bravery.”
In other words, they both loved him the exact same amount, for slightly different reasons that had nothing to do with how powerful/famous Peter was and everything to do with what sort of people Gwen and MJ were.
okay, i think what i’ve been having trouble articulating lately is that lois lane and mary jane watson were fucking formative to me
because they weren’t just ‘super hero girlfriends’ and while wonder woman was amazing and i loved supergirl, i couldn’t picture myself as a super hero, because the…
What the fuck? I think you mean Gwen Stacy. Gwen Stacy loved Peter Parker and MJ loved Spider-Man. MJ did nothing but screw around on Pete. Gwen was loyal, devoted and smart.
Gwen didn’t need to resort to wearing skanky outfits to get Peter’s attention, unlike Mary Jane.
Gwen should be classed with the likes of Lois Lane.
^I’m assuming the above is a joke, because I don’t want to think anyone’s mean enough to see a post about how a character was formative to another person, improved her life even, and then instantly respond with ‘that character you love is a skank’.
It’s been more or less confirmed now that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will use “The Death Of Gwen Stacy” as its storyline, and it has been confirmed that Shailene Woodley is going to play Mary Jane. As is par for the course when a woman is cast in a well-known role, her Tumblr tag and discussion elsewhere is full of “But she’s just not pretty enough!”, as well as what I’m starting to call the “Oh my god, only one woman per franchise!” style of misogyny…
But enough of that. I wonder how they’re going to do it. As a completely wild guess, I’d say Peter will meet MJ first as Harry’s girlfriend, meet Norman through Harry, and be having quite a nice time (sucker!) with his new friends when the inevitable happens. MJ will break up with Harry -although he probably won’t have a drug problem in this one- and go to comfort Peter after Gwen’s death, setting things up for their romance in the second sequel.
I’ll also bet my entire collection of hats that they’ll go the Ultimate Spider-Man route with the Green Goblin and have him just transform into a huge green demon thing, rather than attempting to do something new with a costume that probably won’t ever not look silly on the big screen…
Anyway, poor Gwen- we just met her and there’s already plans for her death. Ironically, the thing that saddens me most about that is the fact that she has a family in this one- a still-living mother and some kid brothers. (Whose addition I really love, incidentally.) They’ll barely be over the death of their father before their sister goes too. I don’t think this is going to be a fun movie!
And, of course, Gwen’s only seventeen in this one. I hope they set the sequel a good few years after the first movie, because I don’t think many people will be able to handle a summer blockbuster centering around the brutal killing of a teenage girl…
(Also on the topic of Gwen’s role in the Spider-Man movies: This.)
This one is for the folks on Tumblr- I’ve met a whole bunch of Spider-Man fans on there and they’re all really nice.
Anyone reading this journal knows what we’re all going to be talking about tomorrow, so there’s a chance this might get lost in the shuffle- but I really wanted to post it today. Hope no-one minds. Here we go-
Title: Safe Hands Author: Rating: PG13, I think Warnings: References to child abuse Summary: Harry meets Gwen in the afterlife.
The ladies of the Spider-Man movie trilogy appreciation post:
Mary Jane Watson: Already looked at her in some depth here!
May Parker: Is the main (well, the only) reason I can’t get behind the ‘Steve and Tony are Peter’s parents!’ thing that fandom has going on. Because Peter still has a living parent: her! And while she could have easily been nothing but a featureless advice dispenser in these films, she actually had some depth to her- the scene where she shouts at Peter to take his birthday money from her even though she’s broke, that’s such a parent thing, it’s happened to us all, I loved it.
Gwen Stacy: I probably do prefer Emma Stone’s version of her, just because we got to know her better. But I love Bryce Dallas Howard’s interpretation too, she was just so nice. I like to think her and MJ became friends in this ‘verse too, sometime in the future.
Betty Brant: Her role amounted basically to a cameo in every movie, but it was still good to see her. I loved the couple of moments she did get with Peter. Also, I love Elizabeth Banks.
Ursula Ditkovich: I’ve thought for a long time that she (and her father sometimes, too) are basically the audience surrogates in Spider-Man 2 and 3- Ursula’s constantly rooting for Peter, and picking him up when he’s down. Plus, she’s named after Steve Ditko, one of Spidey’s creators. In other news, I love her to tiny pieces and might do an in-depth post about her, too, if there’s any interest. Or even if there’s not.
Rosie Octavius: We didn’t get much of a chance to know her, but her relationship with her husband was one of my favourite things about Spider-Man 2. I know that she’s really more of a device to humanize Doctor Octopus than a character in her own right, but I still liked her a lot. The novelisation expands a bit on her, actually, which is nice.
There is a lot of AVENGERS on my dash now, and that’s only right, because it’s bloody good. But all that has served to remind me of my favourite superhero franchise of all time- the Spider-Man films. The Sam Raimi ones! I loved them, and no-one talks about them anymore. So have some picspammed love.
Title: Faith In Humanity Author: sarah531 Rating: PG13 bordering on R Fandom: Spider-Man movieverse Author’s Notes: A while back I attempted a Spider-Man movieverse fanfic called Everyone Has A Choice, and I never finished it. This is that fic mashed down and rebuilt. It has something bordering on a plot now. :p Summary: After the Queensboro Bridge incident, everyone involved struggles through the aftermath. Ursula Ditkovich was not involved, but she struggles through the aftermath nonetheless. And an unhappy middle-aged woman, after taking a job at the Osborn manor, suddenly finds herself an unwilling participant in the battle for a young man’s soul.
