You’d think Martha Jones was THE most important character in Doctor Who with the way people have been reacting to my dislike of her.
This is my reaction to mean re-bloggers:
First I’m all
Then I realize this is the internet and then I’m all
To many people, she is the most important character in Doctor Who.
Because she’s the only female Black companion- and likely to remain the only female Black companion for a good few years. Because she did everything right, saved the Doctor and the world several times-
-and yet her Tumblr tag, on any given day, contains far more hate than anyone else’s. (I checked. Nothing negative at all for the first seven pages of Rose’s tag. Same with Donna, Rory, and Jack. Amy goes for about five. Mickey has hate on his second page*.)
If people react so badly to a black woman on television, what does that say about racism in the ‘real world’? Read this article– it does a better job of explaining it than I can.
Martha is important- hugely important. And the way people reacted to her and continue to react to her is important too.
*Now, what do Martha and Mickey have in common?
Anyone remember The Anchor and the Waterfall, my Amy/Rory websitey thing? (I can just about remember the days when people called them ‘shrines’.) It’s been sitting there dormant for about five months now, so I made a blog to go with it. Basically, anything I post on the website, when I do eventually post something on it, I’ll also post it on that tumblr. So…it’s a good way to get pictures, I guess? There will be an awful lot of pictures and scans there. (I LOVE MY SCANNER)
Also, it is the first successful (admittedly minor) customising of a theme I’ve ever done. Yayz!

I made LiveJournal icons. Unfortunately, no-one uses them anymore. Or uses LiveJournal anymore, I suspect. This makes me sad.

Rory Williams character study: I don’t know what he said to you to make you marry him
Brian was a late addition to Rory’s story, but in his very first scene, it’s clear he may be the root of Rory’s Amy-related insecurities (of which there are many.)
We know Brian’s fantastic, obviously, but look at this scene- without even realising it, Brian’s expressing disbelief that Rory could ever get a girl like that to marry him. And Amy, being Amy, plays at being Brian’s favourite. Perfect as ever!
I can imagine similar jokey comments heading Rory’s way whenever the three were together- Brian possibly so impressed by Amy he forgot his own son had achieved a lot in life too. (We know that Brian’s never seen Rory’s nursing skills in action.) We know Brian’s comment and any previous comments he may have made about the Amy-Rory marriage were made in jest, but it’s entirely possible they ate away at Rory. What he took from them was almost certainly, “Even my own father doesn’t think I’m worthy of someone as incredible as Amy.” Which is the sort of thing that would mutate over the years, make you insecure and jealous…but more on that later.

1. Caroline John, aka Liz Shaw, has died. :( It has not been a good couple of years for the wider Who family. I wonder if they'll dedicate any of the new episodes to her.
2. This story will simultaneously deplete and restore one's faith in humanity. You've probably seen it already, but basically some people who were assholes tormented an elderly lady into tears, it was caught on camera, and then some people who weren't assholes started raising money for her to have a holiday, and now her fund is up to eighteen thousand dollars. (I haven't watched the video of her being bullied, I don't know if I will…) So yeah. She can probably afford to retire now, which is nice.
