tumblr is naturally dominated by american politics at the moment but this is a reminder for all eligible voters in the UK:

you need to register to vote by the end of May in order to be able to vote in the EU referendum which is taking place on June 23rd

there are a number of ways you can vote: if you are able, you can vote in person at a local polling station between 7am and 10pm on the day, but if you are not then you can apply for a postal vote (you need to register for a postal vote by June 8th) or vote by proxy (you can nominate someone else to vote on your behalf – you need to register for this by June 15th)

it’s also important to note that if you are a student, you can be registered in two separate places (although you will, of course, only have one vote)

the EU referendum is extremely important (here and here are some summaries) and so voting is absolutely vital

Also a very important reminder for Scottish voters that you need to register to vote by the 18th of April to be able to vote in the upcoming 2016 Scottish Parliament election on the 5th of May.

To do this, use the links provided above.

So 7 guys have been convicted of carrying out The Hatton Garden Robbery in London and I just cannot get over the ridiculous details of this crime:

  • All of them are pensioners
  • They have a combined age of over 500
  • One dude used his bus pass to get to the robbery
  • The nicknames are amazing
  • Seriously one dude is known as Billy the Fish
  • Another was “The Guv’nor”
  • One of them buried his stash in 2 separate graves, told the police about the smaller one and then they found the grave with the larger stash and asked him about it he said “Oh that one was for my own personal use”
  • They had a very serious discussion about what the heist movie that will inevitably get made about the robbery (it’s the biggest robbery in British history) should be called. The police got the whole conversation on tape, the extracts released to the press are glorious

No but guys, google this and watch the video of how they got in.

Pensioners shimmying through a tiny hole in a wall.  PENSIONERS!  Like how did their backs not go out?

I know right? How tiny was that hole in the wall?

Apparently the trick is to Superman it, you put one arm up ahead of you and keep the other by your side and that gets your shoulders at the right angle to get through and then once your upper body is in you can drag yourself through. But even when the guy from Newsnight did it he struggled to get through and he was early 40s and quite skinny.

This post was just a list of stuff off the top of my head but when you actually look into it the whole thing is just insane. It’s like a movie.

holy fuck.

Can’t trust those pensioners….

Katie Hopkins calls Adam Johnson’s child sex abuse victim a ‘sl*g’

Honestly, I’ve given up being angry at the crap Katie Hopkins puts out. She’s not worth it. She’s a gruesome, greedy professional troll who enjoys nothing more than people’s anger, so I’m not going to give it to her.

No, what makes me angry about this is the amount of people I’ve seen on Facebook agreeing with her. Happy International Women’s Day?

for over ten years, michael marten travelled to different parts of the british coast (click for location) to photograph identical views at high and low tide, revealing how the twice daily rhythm of ebb and flood can dramatically transform the landscape.

combining coastal maps and charts with tide tables, marten plotted out locations where, and times when, he could witness the greatest tidal differences – like at high spring tides, occurring around the full and new moons, and low neap tides, when the moon is on the wax or wane.

he also refined his own methods as a photographer to devised intricate means of ensuring that his camera was placed in precisely the same posture at both high and low tides, all to document what is the gravitational and centrifugal effects of the sun and the moon on the earth as spins on its axis.

as marten notes, “i hope these photographs will stimulate people’s awareness of natural change, of landscape as dynamic process rather than static image. attending to earth’s rhythms can help us to reconnect with the fundamentals of our planet, which we ignore at our peril.”

he adds, “[these photos] are also comments on climate change. the tide floods in and quickly recedes again, but rising sea levels will flood our shores and not recede for thousands or millions of years. many of the views in these pictures may have disappeared in 100 years’ time.”

A black British woman named Sarah Reed was found unresponsive in her cell (north London – HM Prison Holloway) last month and died shortly after prison staff performed CPR. Police told her family that she had strangled herself while on her bed.

Prior to being imprisoned, Reed was the victim of police brutality when she was violently dragged by her hair and punched multiple times by a former Police Constable James Kiddie in November 2012. This horrific scene was caught on CCTV camera and resulted in the dismissal of PC Kiddie who was only slapped with 150 hours of community service and a fine. Kiddie was previously investigated by the police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission, for deploying tear gas during protests in Oxford Street in January 2011.

Sarah reed had been suffering from severe mental health issues ever since the loss of her newborn baby in 2003, and had recently been detained under section 3 of the mental health act. Family have said that Reed was a victim of an attempted rape in Maudsley (psychiatric hospital in south London) and when she fought off her attacker, injuring him, staff called police. Only Sarah reed was arrested. During her stay in prison, family have said she was denied medical attention. They said they also weren’t allowed to see her body during a visit to the prison (after her death) and believe this arrest was in retaliation to Sarah challenging the racist and violent officer who attacked her several years ago.

This is a case of negligence, the disregard of mental health issues, institutional racism and sexual violence. The family just wants the truth and ultimately justice, everyone needs to know what happened.
