This is fabulous, fabulous, fabulous, all Harry Potter fans must read. Or something.
I went to see They Might Be Giants in London last night. It was awesome, but the awesomeness was marred by having a cold. (Whenever I have anything I have tickets for, something I can’t get out of, I always have a cold.) Anyhoo.
Have been away from LJ for, um, probably about a month now. We’ve moved house, you see, and now have a lovely new apartment. So that took up quite a bit of time.
Oh man, I watched Torchwood…
I expected Jack’s grandchild to get back up, you know. I really honestly couldn’t believe that the show which serves as companion to Doctor Who, probably the best family show in the world, could do something so, well, horrible. And then before the end, when Jack’s daughter stood opposite Jack in the corridor, I again pretty much expected the little kid to come through the door, better again. And he didn’t. Huh.
I can’t quite hate Jack. Don’t know why.
This was Russell T. Davies’s doing, wasn’t it? Between the cruel ending of Season Four and this, I’m kinda wondering if he’s working out issues or something. Because it was cruel. I don’t think it was bad writing, though, not really, because look what it’s done- everyone’s talking about it. No-one in my family likes Torchwood and yet they were talking about it. My dad told me he saw bits of it and read about it and it scared him, and I laughed (probably shouldn’t have done that) but he’s sort of right. He said it was ‘bleak’ and he’s right again. He didn’t really elaborate on what bit scared him, and I didn’t ask, but it scared me too, actually, I reckon. And here I am talking about it, and…
…you know, basically I’m just really really glad Torchwood is fiction. And that’s all I got on the subject for now.

Rose and her new Doctor end up discussing what became of Donna Noble. The voices are down perfectly, and oh, it’s so sad. Lovely but sad, and makes you hurt for the Doctor even when he’s done such questionable things.
Realization hits her like a bucket of cold water and she raises her eyebrows. “Oh, my God – she’s not even going to have a choice, is she?”

Donna post-Series Four. Something lovely and uplifting after Journey’s End, featuring some characters you’d expect to see and one you might not. Gets Donna down perfectly too; her memories are gone but she’s still her. And she deserves a happy ending.
Donna Noble,” he says, still laughing. “Good for you, Donna. Good for you.”

I haven’t the words to describe how much I love this: it’s a Torchwood/Narnia crossover and not only does it work but it works beautifully. I’m not much of a Narnia fan but I’ve always been fascinated with the problem of Susan, and here she takes center stage and a whole new twist is put on her actions.
Susan frowns at him, as their waitress brings them salads to begin. “You’re not from around here either,” she says firmly. “You’re not from America. I don’t know where you’re from. Maybe not even this planet.”
One more thing about Torchwood: this is only a rumour, but if true it’s so awesome it deserves it’s own post.
It has been speculated that at the end of Series 4, Martha and Mickey leave with Jack, and they become the new Torchwood employees. My two favourite characters, not only interacting, but they get their own show!
Good god, that was a bloodbath. RIP Tosh (it’s always my favourite characters who get it) and RIP Owen, even if you were a wanker, at least you went out pretty well.
Jack will need to hire some new staff for Season 3. I wonder what that ad would look like. (I also suggest Rhys gets upgraded to Torchwood staff…)
I have one plot bunny after that episode, but I bet loads of other people will write it to…
One thing I was never quite able to fathom about the Torchwood finale: did Abadon/the end of days actually happen or was it reset? It was reset for Rhys (i.e. he wasn’t dead anymore) but what about the people killed by Abadon? I should probably watch that episode again. Meh.
But I realised- if it did definately happen in the Whoniverse, and if it’s true that in Earth time Martha’s only with the Doctor for four days or so (it is according to RTD, I think), then the Whoniverse experiences…
-The end of days -Abadon -The Royal Hope hospital being transported to the moon -The Lazarus monster -Saxon’s rise to power
…..in less than a week. I imagine by Series Four, people will barely look up from their papers when an alien invades. :p
We have the Doctor as God, Jack as Jesus (being raised on the third day and all), the TARDIS vortex as a sort of holy spirit which brings people back to life, Sarah Jane quoting the Bible, Preachers, Popes, Satan himself…
…and we quite sure RTD’s a athiest? ;)
Anyway, once I finally bothered to download it, I liked it quite a lot. :) Episode 12 more than Episode 13, though, although that one had it’s moments. Some points:
-Toshiko is now my favourite character. I think I’ll make myself a Tosh icon.
-I reaaally want to know if, when Jack killed Abadon, everyone came back to life and forgot everything like Rhys did. Because if not, I’d love to see how the government covered that up.
-Speaking of which, I do sort of wish for consequences, dammit. Earth so far in the Whoniverse has suffered (in the new series alone) at least four major alien invasions, several minor ones, and still there are people expressing disbelief in aliens. So when I saw Abadon stalking the Cardiff streets, I honestly thought, “Eh. Next series it’ll all be forgotten.”
-Gwen’s reaction to Rhys’s death was terrific, I have to say. Eve Myles did really well…but I have to admit I’d have been more affected had she given more of a hint, previously, that she even cared much about him. So far she’s cheated on him, lied to him, tasered him and locked him up without a proper explanation. Actually, I rather hope he leaves her.
Well, I’ll be darned. I haven’t given much thought to Torchwood for ages…I haven’t even seen episode 9 yet…but that? Was one of the best bits of television I’ve seen for months.
(Annnnnnnnnd…next week is the Noel Clarke episode!)
