the last man on earth midseason finale

sarah531:

that was the bleakest sad-song montage in a series full of them

that was also the bleakest goddamn episode they’ve probably ever done. if we’re meant to take the ending at face value, holy shit. :(

a few more things:

Some very smart person on AV Club pointed out that Tandy’s behaviour lines up with the symptoms of mania, and has done for some time. Meanwhile Melissa is disassociating to the point of almost getting herself killed, Carol is the most depressed we’ve ever seen her, and when Pat inevitably comes back presumably he’ll still be paranoid. This series is going HARD on the mental health issues, and it hasn’t always done them perfectly but damn. Despite all the jokes and stuff, it seems a very realistic (in some ways) depiction of what people would actually be like at the end of the world.

I don’t know what’s going to happen with the aeroplane plot, but I sort of hope Lewis will attempt to fly to Tokyo, fail (he hasn’t exactly had much practice) but find another survivor or two along the way.

ERICA STILL HAS NOTHING TO DO, though the baby seems to be starting to show now? She was at least a month or two ahead of Carol, surely…

the last man on earth 3×08

That was funny despite the subject matter, which really is VERY bleak, even bleaker than usual-

I like that Erica and Lewis appear to be becoming friends. They probably hang out together and complain about the white people. (Well, complain about Tandy, Carol, Melissa and Gail. Todd is actually Latino and also surely no-one would actually want to complain about him)

Speaking of Todd his angry breakdown this episode was done very well, and served as a good reminder of how very decent a person (probably quite literally the nicest person on earth) he’s been the rest of the time.

I still think Tandy (yeah, I’ve given up calling him Phil. No-one’s called him Phil for ages now) is bisexual as hell and I would love it if that headcanon became reality, but I doubt it will. In the meantime here he is casually admiring another guy’s penis.

I can’t believe the Carol/Melissa friendship was tossed aside (by the writers) so easily. I’m pretty disappointed about that. :( I mean I can definitely buy that Carol began keeping her distance after Melissa nearly shot her (not to mention all her other reckless/ruthless actions) but there should have been a scene between them at some point this season and there wasn’t. There probably won’t be now either.

the last man on earth 3×07

Gail is going to die, whenever a character says “you’ll miss me when I’m gone” they’re totally gonna die

good episode for showing just how far Tandy has come, honestly this might be the first proper conversation he’s ever had with Melissa where he wasn’t angling to get in her pants, too bad that…yeah

poor Melissa

still Erica has nothing to do although I’m hoping the reason she had scenes with Lewis is that that two of them will bond over their dead romantic partners

I can’t believe how quickly the Carol/Melissa relationship was forgotten about, I loved it. That’s really annoying. Unless something happens with regards to it next episode

no gary the volleyball?

I still miss Mike

WHAT AN EPISODE. things that made me tear up:

  • Gail’s revelation, which I totally called on the TLMOE subreddit yesterday. I wonder what her son died of and how old he was.
  • Lewis
breaking down at the pictures of him and Mark. a+ acting from Ken Choi
and also :( :( :( I kept wondering if Mark was an actor we knew in the
photos (they did the same trick with Jason S) but actually, though I did
wonder if it was Zachary Quinto, I don’t think it was
  • aaaaand
the Mike question remains unanswered but devastating. I’m not surprised
Phil couldn’t go in the room in the end. I wonder what he put in the
note, but I suppose the point is that we’ll never know. Maybe the point
is that we’ll never actually know if Mike is dead or not, too. This show
is very adamant about the fact that there isn’t always closure.

other things I loved:

  • “And
‘cos I love you.” “I love you too, Carol”. This show does female
friendship really well (except when they completely forget about how
close Carol and Melissa were, which they have done)
  • Gail and Carol as a mother-daughter pair is a good substitute, though
  • “Kris and Caitlyn Jenner.

Double granny whammy there!” And Carol’s whole weird gran scrapbook in fact

  • Phil’s speech about how Carol saved him. I think he meant saved in more ways than one.
  • “You are the most frustrating, annoying lunatic I have ever met!And I was on a boat with PAT!”
  • I love how the Miller family wall is packed with photos celebrating Mike’s achievements, but the ridiculous photo of Phil winning a burrito eating competition is also center stage. Phil’s mum and dad were good parents

other other things:

  • GIVE ERICA SOMETHING TO DO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
  • She dated Mike! She really liked him! Next episode should have her and Phil talking about him FOR SURE, but it probably won’t
  • This episode has done nothing to dissuade my opinion that Phil is bisexual and just remarkably….bad at it
  • Who would’ve thought Melissa (poor Melissa) would be into Shawshank Redemption slash

what. an. episode.

The Shawshank thing was another season one callback, I thought?

Oh it was, but I did not expect Melissa-as-Andy to try and sex up Todd-as-Red. (nor did I expect the tunnel, come to think of it….)

PS I love how the Shawshank Redemption bit, in its own way, tied into the theme of the episode. “hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”

what. an. episode.

a final tlmoe thought: In amongst all the Jon Hamm-murdering chaos of that episode, was it ever confirmed that it really was Pat and co who had been sending the drones? Because it would be a real left-field twist if it turned out to be someone else, like these ‘bunker people’ who keep coming up

shenanigaining:

sarah531:

Honestly, I’m kinda suspecting that Mike may be alive after all, because you’ve got this all of a sudden –

Speaking of Jason Sudeikis and Mike, what odds would you give that we will see him at one point or another this season?
Very, very low odds. But we love making low-odds choices from time to time.

And this interview where Will Forte confirms that the sports balls, last seen with Mike, will be back in a ‘very emotional moment’. So either Mike is alive or Phil will, I dunno, prise them from his skeleton. (Which, in this show, wouldn’t actually be surprising, but still.)

Also the ‘previously on’ recap didn’t mention Mike was dead, just that he went away. HE’S ALIVE, HE’S STILL ALIVE, POSSIBLY

The ‘previously on’ really did raise a lot of suspicion…it’s possible they just didn’t have lots of time to edit in more footage to clarify that Mike was on his way to death, but it was odd enough that I’m Hopeful

ME TOO

Omg I’m so torn though. Because if he *is* alive, Jason Sudeikis is far too busy to be a regular on a TV show, so…what happens next?! Does he die again For Real? Do we never find out what really happened? I want closure, dammit. Also for the show to NOT BE CANCELLED until we find out
