the last man on earth

Man I really am so disappointed about that. I know what sort of show this is, and I know Kenneth Choi probably never planned to stick around for long anyway (what with the MCU and a new pilot* on his plate) but killing off one of television’s very few gay Asian men just to drive a point home about the lack of hope, it’s just…. not good. And every awkward joke at his funeral scene just fell terribly flat for me.

It’s not cool when Walking Dead does it and it’s not cool when TLMOE does it! What happened to my soft apocalypse? The only silver lining is that he was fridged in favour of Erica, I suppose.

*pun not intended, sigh

I’m disappointed in The Last Man On Earth for killing Lewis, and not just because he was the only LGBT character. I’m not quite sure how to say this without sounding dumb, but I know that this is a show about the apocalypse, but I just don’t want every single episode to have something depressing happen. Also, I think it represents a missed opportunity. Lewis could have caught a glimpse of Kristen Wiig’s character while flying and kickstarted a new story arc.

I too am intensely disappointed. :(

(Though I’m not sure he’s the only LGBT character, Erica and Gail are implied to be bi.)

Is it time for Lewis to leave ‘Last Man on Earth’ behind? (EXCLUSIVE)

I’ll be okay with Lewis leaving (the role of ‘seventh person in the group’ has a pretty high turnover rate, and I heard Kenneth Choi was meant to be filming something else around now anyway) as long as he doesn’t die. I’m not sure I can handle any more of the Bury Your Gays Trope in the world of TV. Just have him fly off into the sunset or something, hm?

(Also, there’s a new clip at the source! Hooray!)

Oh. Well, I was wrong about that and now extremely disappointed.

Still thinking about that episode. What was phenomenal but could go overlooked to the average viewer, is how subversive that political subplot was. Even though Trump himself was never mentioned, which was brilliant on their part, it was highly implied that the outbreak of the virus was a result of the failing administration. Whether it was the intention of the show or not, they just illustrated what a world would look like when federal funds are stripped from scientific research. That may have been my favorite part of what was already a superb episode.
