Jenny Beavan has spoken about that jacket and she’s officially a fashion hero

Beavan demonstrated grade-A badassery at the 2016 Oscars by accepting her award for Mad Max: Fury Road wearing a custom leather biker jacket. There might have been some raised eyebrows at the unconventional Oscars outfit, but it was all part of her fashion philosophy, the one we plan on reciting every day. She didn’t even give two shits when a bunch of old dudes didn’t clap as she strode down the aisle.

If I see one more disparaging remark about Jenny Beavan’s appearance I am going to crush someone under my collection of costuming texts.

Jenny Beavan wore an outfit that reflected her work on the film that her designs were nominated for. She wore a nice pair of black pants, a matching top, a scarf (which is something of a Thing™ with her wardrobe), and a jacket that directly referenced Fury Road.

I give approximately zero fucks whether people on the internet find her attractive. She’s a talented costume designer who wore clothing she felt comfortable in and a jacket that is at the very least shiny and chrome, communicating her place as the odd one out in a heavily historically-influenced set of nominations. Her work was great, and quite different from the work the Academy generally honors.

Now, can we get back to talking about the Academy’s old-fashioned mentality about… everything? Because that’s something we need to work on.

THIS GOOD LORD THIS

Jesus fucking christ does her fucking work requires for her to be “attractive”? Is it a fucking requirement for a costume designer or any other woman to please your fucking retinas? The answer is NO. She’s an amazing costume designer who wore an outfit that was a homage to her work, and THAT is something worth of respect.

I want that jacket

Mad Max’s Costume Director, Jenny Beavan, is badass in more ways than one

After showing up to the Oscars in a motorcycle jacket, #NoMakeUp, and au naturale hair, she went on stage to accept her award in the most casual way. All in all, she is all of us. “I really don’t do frocks and I absolutely don’t do heels,” Beavan told Refinery29.
