All I can think of so far is that, if the episode really *doesn’t* end with Bill getting fixed, there’s gonna be some really worrying subtext
doctor who
Doctor 13
Let’s talk… Kris Marshall.
Now don’t get me wrong, I want a female Doctor, or at the very least a non-white doctor. But if Kris Marshall does turn out to be our new Doctor, yes I will be disappointed, but I wont hate it.
He is a fine actor, I’ve only really seen him in Death in Paradise but just from that I always felt he gave off a very Doctor-ly vibe. Obviously I don’t want the next Doctor to be Humphrey Goodman in space, but he definitely has that quality about him.
The day after World Enough and Time my dad (a Sri Lankan man in his 50′s) and I were watching a re-run of Death in Paradise, and when I told him about him possibly being the next Doctor, right away he agreed that he would suit the role.
But like I said, I do want the next Doctor to be either female or not white, my top two picks would be Hayley Atwell (I know she’s said she doesn’t want to do it but a guy can still dream), and Sacha Dhawan (who not only has already appeared in the Whoniverse in An Adventure in Space and Time, but has also expressed interest in the part).
So if Kris Marshall does end up being the next Doctor, give him a chance, yes it could have been so much better but don’t let that diminish the show for you.
Okay, let’s talk: it will diminish the show for me. I’m not here for the BBC and Chibnall’s lip service to diversity and touting bold and radical changes, only for them to cast Kris Marshall or someone similar. Their chances are up. Kris Marshall is at the top of my list of people that would make me quit the show if cast as Thirteen. I can’t and won’t support that.
No offence to Kris Marshall, who I’m sure is a lovely person, but his casting would honestly feel like a deliberate ‘ha! you really thought the Doctor could be anything other than a white man?’ slap in the face at this point.
Like, sure companions are constantly in danger but lately it’s been. Idk weird. It started last season with the teacher and her damn death wish
Oh, you mean Clara? I (mostly) like the Clara arc, if only because it ends with her being functionally immortal.
But I do think it’s high time the showrunners retired the ‘will the companion DIE’ tease that’s accompanied damn near every season finale so far.
I mean, that’s been a feature since the reboot started. Rose nearly died at the end of S1 and then the whole finale of S2 was all about “this is the story of how I died”. Donna’s ‘death’ was teased for at least two episodes. River started out by dying. I can’t see Chibnall changing the formula that much because it continues to bring in viewers.
True, but… that actually kinda makes me feel even more like it’s probably time to retire it? I guess I’d just kinda like the plots to shift more towards “what will the companion do with her life once she leaves the TARDIS?” and less “what horrible near-death (or actual death) experience will make the companion leave the TARDIS?”
By the way, since I’m browsing spoilers and set reports anyway, if anyone wants to know what the Christmas Special appears to be about –
there seems to be a pretty high chance it’s set during WWI and the Christmas Truce? Also…..and this is the huge spoiler so look away now if you need to… apparently it will also star David Bradley….as the First Doctor!
killing off the black lesbian is 100% something Steven Moffat would do though, so?
Killing off the black lesbian is 100% something Steven Moffat would not do and you’ll see that on Saturday.
I don’t know if anyone’s up for some HUGE SPOILERS!!! but-
Of course, that then shifts the conversation out of “it’s really not okay to kill the first black lesbian on your children’s show” territory and into “Is it really okay to leave fans of the first black lesbian on your children’s show hanging for a week about whether she lives or dies” territory. (And I’d say ‘no’ to that last questions, honestly.)

There are a couple of folks on Gallifrey Base who have seen the episode already, and although they’re obviously sworn to secrecy about what exactly happens, they’re pretty adamant that Bill’s apparent cyber-conversion doesn’t stick.
And even more promisingly, someone’s gotten a picture of Pearl Mackie on the set for the Christmas Special! (I will not link to it as I don’t want to be sued into oblivion by the BBC.) Which admittedly means very little on its own, as it could be a flashback or a dream or who knows what, but considering that a few days ago we didn’t even know if she was in it…
