Farewell, farewell, O warrior brave,
Nobody can from Death thee save.

It’s broken, that one. It doesn’t have a gun (Steven Moffat, “Listen” Doctor who) // All the soldiers looked exactly alike except one. He looked a little different as he had been cast last of all. (Hans Christian Andersen, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, tr. by Jean Hersholt)

Danny Pink was the man who tried to be the Steadfast Tin Soldier in a world that didn’t believe in fairy tales anymore. He was the silent vigil in a child’s world, crippled, not in his flesh but in his heart; the spoon he was made of was childhood-brittle and war-corroded. He was the timid lover of a paper doll, a girl made of books and rustling steps, and the stubborn and cool antagonist of the Jack in-the-box, of all trade, reluctant puppet master. He was the brave castaway in an ocean of strangeness, where an alien guarded his school and London was flooded with trees and howling. Always, he stood steadfast, unwavering in his love for the paper doll, for home, for children, and iron-clad in his need for truth and good. Danny was not a soldier when did all those things, not anymore.

But a tin heart he got in the end.

Danny died for no reason at all, just like the Tin Soldier from the story. Probably put to it by the Jack, a cruel child, instead of throwing him into the stove, put him in a box of metal, a metal suit, with a metal weapon and a metal heart. Soldiers keep the whole world safe. So Danny burnt in flames a soldier to keep the world safe from him. But Danny was not a soldier when he loved the paper doll, cared for the children and came back from death’s belly. He was iron-clad in his need for trust and promises. He burnt in flames for Clara.

And here’s where this is not a fairy tale: the paper doll didn’t burn with him.

I wandered into the Danny Pink tag and as I suspected, there’s a lot of hate there. (Same at GB.) And I do know that there are reasons to dislike Danny – he accidentally killed a child, after all. But the fact that he has reasons to geniunely dislike him is sort of…why I like him? He’s careless (or he was) and he’s socially awkward and inflexible and he might well have been lying to Clara as much as she was lying to him (depending on whether she knew about the dead child or not), which also makes him a hypocrite, and…

…he’s just so damn interesting, alright? Because he’s also caring and charismatic and tormented over his actions, and good with kids and a natural leader and he obviously really loved Clara. (I don’t think their relationship would have lasted without both of them making serious changes, however. Which just makes it sadder.) I’m so sad to see him go, I loved him to bits, and I really want to see lots of meta about him.

I dislike Danny because of the way he mischaracterizes the relationship between Clara and the Doctor. He sees them together a few times and suddenly he has the whole dynamic worked out, and he is so sure the Doctor is bad for Clara. Even after learning that the Doctor is her best friend he still tries to get Clara to see the Doctor in a negative light. They never bothered to get to know each other, they’re both working off of preconceptions based on the others role, and its frustrating. -Anonymous

But in that case, doesn’t Twelve equally deserve criticism? Even after hearing Danny died, he says to Clara “And?” Which can obviously be interpreted several ways, but I don’t think he was particularly pro-Danny/Clara…

Plus, I can kind of forgive Danny for seeing the Doctor completely in a negative light: Danny only really knows him as “that spaceman who keeps showing up, putting everyone in danger, insulting me and making my girlfriend upset and angry”. Maybe things would have changed if Danny had lived, but….

I am so not ok right now. This final broke my heart more than I thought it did (Clara’s theme song makes me cry now). I’ve been wanting to draw that scene all day and came back home to see that someone already did an amazing painting of it. But I still went with it because I have feels to evacuate. I’ll be the unoriginal one~

On another note, it’s officially been a year since I joined the Doctor Who fandom, with this little doodle. The comment makes me laugh… good times~
