Been a pretty good week for my fandoms, hasn’t it? ;)
I loved Nancy. She’s terrific, and would have made a good companion. :)
I loved the gas-mask-taking-over-the-face bit…it was horrific but just the right side of unbelievable, y’know?
I loved, loved, loved the Doctor and the homeless kids. Especially him just taking the chicken and everyone gasping.
I loved the Doctor’s conversation with the Empty Child paralleling Rose’s conversation with the Dalek (that may me me seeing things that aren’t there, though.)
I loved ‘Who did you lose?’ and ‘I know the feeling.’ Actually, that last one ripped my heart out, in a good way. ;)
Rating so far: End of the World, Dalek, The Empty Child, Father’s Day, Aliens of London, The Uniquiet Dead, WWIII, Rose, The Long Game.
And I switched channels and saw the end of The Phantom Menace afterwards, too. :)
2:30 pm, Thursday May 19th- I am sitting in a cinema along with my friend Emma. Between us we have a plastic lightsabre and an outragously expensive bag of crispy M&Ms. The trailers end, the cinema quietens, and A Long Time Ago In A Galaxy Far Far Away appears on screen.
And then, the music starts and the letters scroll up. I have a big stupid grin on my face and I honestly don’t care.
The yellow letters in the stars look spectacularly three-dimensional. I wonder why I’ve never noticed that before.

The opening scene- my god, I loved every second of that. Especially some of the very first lines.
“I’ll go back and help them.”
“No- they’re doing their job, you do yours.”
Oh, I think, so that’s why he fell.

The whole thing with the elevators with brilliant. It reminded me of ANH. And it was just what the film needed, a bit of fun before all hell breaks loose. R2 was great as well- I didn’t know he could do half of that stuff. :)

What else? My god, there’s so much stuff-
The bit that keeps cutting between Padme in the apartment and Anakin in the Council room- oh wow. If that doesn’t make some future Best SW Scenes list…it should. Seriously.
That, after god knows how many years, we finally got a glance at Leia’s adopted mother. :)
Someone in the cinema went ‘awwww’ when that little Jedi kid said ‘there’s too many of them…’ I expect the under-12’s in the cinema (and there were a couple of them) got a bit of a shock after that. ;)
Obi-Wan’s ‘Oh SHIT’ expression when Grevous reveals himself (honestly…no matter how I phrase that sentence, it still sounds downright wrong. :p) Really, other than that, and Yoda taking care of the Red Guards, there was so little humour in this episode. Which is really how it should be.
Probably the bit that really stood out, but probably just for me? When Palpatine says ‘Only one other has cheated death’ or whatever he said…I was like OMGQUIGON. And then he didn’t show up like I figured he would. ;) Well, I suppose he almost did, but hey…I’ll get the DVD. As will we all. :D
Palpatine saying how Darth Plagueis ‘could create life’? Another OHMYGOD from me.

Oh, I want to talk about Obi-Wan for a second.
He doesn’t cry in this one. He comes very close, but he doesn’t cry. He hasn’t cried since TPM. He doesn’t even after both Anakin and Padme are dead (or he thinks they’re dead) You can tell he’s so close to breaking, but he doesn’t. He just doesn’t.
He’s that good.

Oh, and Yoda! My god, if anyone went into this movie hating Yoda (not me, but I know some people do) they will utterly loathe him by the end. That bit about ‘Miss them, you should not.’…if I was Anakin, I’d have thrown him right out of the window.

And just a bit about Anakin-
I didn’t want Anakin to turn. I really didn’t. After Mace dies, and Palpatine is speaking, I was thinking to Anakin, ‘Say NO. For God’s sake, just say NO.’ He didn’t.
And all through the film you get the feeling that he knows he’s in over his head, but has no idea just how much…
I kept thinking about TPM. It was exactly right. Maybe it’s partly to do with the fact that I was twelve when I saw it, and it was a long hot summer…but I kept thinking about it…

Okay, okay, the bits that nearly made me cry-
(I hardly ever cry at movies, and especially not in public. :p)
Obi-Wan’s ‘I will do what I must’. OMG that was perfect, perfect, perfect. I can’t even describe it. It just said so much- Obi-Wan’s loyality to both his Master and to the Council (and they were always at odds…) and sadness and…well, I would have cried then. I really would. I think that might be my favourite bit in the entire movie, actually.
(Heck, maybe Obi-Wan is the most balanced Jedi of them all)
‘I loved you!’
Which says it all really.
The ending. Owen and Beru looking at the sunset- well, it begins with Owen looking at the sunset, really, and I thought that was great. I always liked Owen and Beru. Who knows what Luke might have turned out like, if not for them? And Beru’s face when Obi-Wan hands Luke to her…she was really good. I wish I’d met her at C7 now.

Me and Emma went home and watched the end of Return of the Jedi.
Well, that’s it. It was brilliant. Now that was a Star Wars movie…
Rose’s dad- I love Rose’s dad. I also love that Rose finds out her parent’s marriage wasn’t exactly ideal.
The Doctor and Rose- Y’know what? I think he was going to leave her. He may have said later that he wasn’t, but he put the key in the TARDIS door…if he can leave Adam on Earth, why can’t he leave Rose, who’s done almost the same trick of ‘making the universe serve you’ or whatever he said?
Although maybe he can’t…maybe if he had left her, he’d have come back…he’s lost his entire family, and she’s pretty much his family now. Heck, he’s even treating Jackie the same way you’d treat, say, the cousin who you think is a bit thick…he’s becoming more and more tied to Rose, the Tylers and Earth.
This might not be a bad thing…
The Doctor- I loved him in this episode. From telling the wedding couple that they were important, to actually dying to get rid of the Reaper (did he know he’d come back, though?)…
It jumps out at you a bit, that scene with the wedding couple, though. One minute the Doctor is calling humans ‘stupid apes’ and the next he’s making a connection with two of them who he’s never met. He seems to like humans fine individually, just not in general. (which seems fair enough, I suppose- heck, it’s not as if a lot of us don’t think the same thing)
‘I’m the oldest thing in the room.’ -that’s going in my sig.
I don’t know what the plan was with the TARDIS, but I sort of liked that- he wanted everyone to remain alive and not suffer, and he couldn’t think of anything but wanted to so much. Of course he could’ve gone to Pete and told him he had to go jump under the car, but could you do that to someone you’d just met, who was the father of your best friend?
The rest-
I can’t believe I didn’t realise that little kid was Mickey…
The Reapers are hands down the best monsters so far. (Daleks don’t count) :p

Title: So Are You Fandom: Doctor Who (2005) Genre: Gen (as per usual XD) Rating: PG A/N: Set before Aliens of London, was inspired by that random line in WWIII about Rose’s grandmother and how she thinks Rose is in France.
I’m slightly annoyed about that, actually, although I shouldn’t be, because this means I can watch Doctor Who and then change over and catch the end of Star Wars, which is far more good TV in one night than anyone deserves…but no, I’m annoyed because I just know this is going to lead to rivalry between the two fandoms, and having seen all the various LOTR vs HP, HP vs SW, Pokemon vs Digimon, whatever vs whatever fanwanks, I know it pretty much sucks. And I like them both. (alright, alright, maybe Star Wars I like a little more, despite the fact I’m wearing my Dalek t-shirt today)
1) Total number of films I own on DVD/video: *counts on fingers* 12. Or maybe 13. (Not counting all the ones that are in the house but aren’t actually mine.)
2) The last film I bought: I don’t buy films. Seriously. I get them all for birthdays or Christmas. ;)
3) The last film I watched: 28 Days Later – yay horror, yay zombies, and yay Chris Eccleston.
4) Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me: 1. Spider-Man 2, which I always think about as being my movie, like people sometimes think of books as being their books. It just fits with the way I see the world, that movie. 2. Star Wars (all films), because it’s an epic battle of good vs evil and the Skywalkers (and Obi-Wan) won. 3. Holes, because it brought the book to life 4. LOTR (all of them) because they’re so incredibly pretty 5. Dragonheart, because…no-one’s ever heard of it, so it seems. :p
Revenge of the Sith is smack bang in the middle of my exam period. I’m not sure whether to be relieved (because I won’t be at school) or unsure (because I’m supposed to be revising).
Er, yes, I am going anyway. ;) Never mention this post to anyone, mmmkay?
p.s.- I am thoroughly determined to today prove I haven’t given up on Making.
So, the basic plot of this one (exploding aliens aside)- Adam turns out to be a bit of a nitwit, and the Doctor decides he’d rather have Rose instead. He does in fact spend most of the episode complimenting her, is decidedly crueller to Adam than he really needed to be, and at the end of the episode both of ’em actually come off as rather dislikable.
…and personally I think it’s building up to something. Father’s Day, to be exact. :D During the trailer, there’s a bit where the Doctor says ‘I did it again, picked up another stupid ape.’ and it looks like he’s talking to Rose. Adam messes about trying to change the future, and now Rose is going to mess about trying to change the past- she may not be the ideal companion either, simply because she is human, and humans are ruled by their emotions, be it self-interest (Adam) or love (Rose).
And yeah. But leaving Adam like that- not especially smart, I reckon. Is it just me, or is this definately beginning to have the feeling of one of those ‘only the strong survive’ fairytales? (And it is beginning to seem a bit like a fairytale, albeit a very modern one) ;)
I’m (still) fascinated by CE’s Doctor. You get the feeling you really, really don’t want to get on the wrong side of him. He has absolutely zero tolerance for greed or stupidity, and yet you get the feeling that he’s only just sane himself. And he appears to be grinning a lot less.
Rose…as I said, I think she’s being set up for a fall. Roll on next episode. :)
Two other random things: 1) Simon Pegg was good, as always, and 2) What happened to the thing about Suki being one of Rose’s friends from school, somehow kept alive all these years? Read that one in a magazine, I guess it was just a rumor…
Oh, all right, 3) We’ve had Simon Pegg, now I want Martin Freeman in an episode, dangnabbit.
