on icons
oh, teh woes.
I feel like an incredible whiner posting this…or at least, someone who can’t take concrit, which Is Not Good…but, in the past three days, I got turned down for both the new DW elite icons comms. (whoelite, and…damn, I’ve forgotten the other one. Sorry.) The most recent one said ‘Colouring needs work and they’re too oversharpened’ (well, not in those words, but you know) and I have to admit I disagree a lot about that (well, maybe not on the sharpening, since I think a couple probably are, although not all of them), so I’ve come to ask advice on whether that is true, or I’m just a huge icon egotist or something.
I swear to God I won’t be offended. They are just icons, I suppose. :p
…and there will also be a batch of DW icons later tonight. I’m quite proud of ’em so far. XD

Gaaaaah, that’s crap. You’re my favorite iconist of all time, seriously. I like yours because they’re so unique. Anyone can crop an image 100×100 and play around with the sharpness or coloring. I mean, they have tutorials for that kind of thing. But yours are so art-y, the pictures you choose always surprise me, and they’re new, original things. They’re so fresh. I don’t recognize yours because of a particular shade or style, like I would some other icon journals I follow, but because yours are so freaking creative. It’s never what I would have expected, and it’s *always* awesome. And Whoelite sounds like a bunch of snobbish, trendy punks. Don’t need em. Jess said, with wrath. And you’re not a whiner. :D

Aww, Jess. *hugs* And Whoelite sounds like a bunch of snobbish, trendy punks. Don’t need em. Jess said, with wrath. Am not sure about snobbish, but they’ve made some weird decisions- before I applied there I saw them reject a load of really gorgeous icons. Le sigh. Still, that’s the thing with elite comms- if there’s only a few people accepting apps, and they happen to dislike a particular style or something, then…well, I guess they lose out in the end, because the people who friend them think ‘wtf? These are just like the icons in every other comm’ and eventually give up. Or something. XD This is why I will never ever open an elite comm without a whole vast team of people. ;) //end ramble Thanks so much for the compliments- they mean a lot. :D (Tis also nice to know I’m not a whiner, though I’m sure I must be at some point. ;) )

Of course! :) Yeah, I watched a “good” csi icon community for a while (that was actually the name. Good CSI Icons. Versus, you know, the sister community, Shoddy!Crap!CSI Icons. )…anyway, it turned out that one person was running the thing. Heh. Also, I meant to ask this before, but…is that my baby Ken from Digimon on your moodpic for this entry?? :O

Ooh yes, it’s Ken! Who is very emo indeed in a lovely sort of way. ;)

Ah, those comms are crap, ys. They pop up in every fandom and are best ignored. That said, the one you’re using in this post is really nicely cropped and coloured, but I do agree it’s oversharpened – I really have a thing about oversharpening icons, though. I find it sort of ruins the quality of the photo – it turns into more of a sketch, and the people look less like people. But it’s my icon pet peeve, so.

You’re probably very right about that, but alas, every time one pops up I am compelled to try and get in…so I suppose I totally bring it on myself really. ;) I agree about the oversharpening- it’s very hard to get the balance right between too blurry and too sharp, meep. (I also went over to another computer right now, just to see what everything looked like on there- and it looks even sharper. ;) )

Well, I just love your icons. They have a distinctive look (unlike all the cookie-cutter icons out there) and they’re so creative and eye-catching, and I think they’re beautiful.

I’ll agree with the over-sharpening thing, actually. But then again I don’t like sharpening things whatsoever :-)

I like your icons – They’re the reason I first hd a mooch about your journal and decided I might quite like to add you. I know you feel – I’ve had that with fanfic. You know it SHOULDN’T bother you, but it does niggle at you a bit. Eh, one of those things. You can’t please everyone, as long as they’re polite about it, no need to worry. :)

You know it SHOULDN’T bother you, but it does niggle at you a bit. Exactly. :) Am glad you like my icons, anyway. *grins*

Elite comms are rubbish, really. Oversharpening… maybe? The one you’re using now is a trifle too sharpened, perhaps. I like the contrast in colours, though. (If you really want to get in, also see what crit they give the others, and make sure your icons don’t fall into those categories, either.) But, yeah, elite comms aren’t so very elite.

Elite comms are rubbish, really. You’re probably very right (you only get into elite comms on the basis of one or two people’s opinion, after all) but alas, I am addicted to them. :( I think I won’t sharpen icons so much in the future. ;)

It’s two people, really. Why are they so elite, anyway? I suggest experimentation. :D

*hugs* Chin up. If it makes you feel better, I got 3 stories in a nice little row turned down by the TFN Archives. *g*
