I don’t want to mock the UK as a whole. I don’t even want to mock people who voted “Leave” because they genuinely believed it was the best thing to do.
What I’m absolutely stunned by are the many voters saying publicly this morning that they only voted “Leave” as a protest or a criticism of the EU, that they didn’t really believe it would pass and didn’t want it to, and now they regret voting it.
Like… that’s not… how voting works?
Like someone was going to look at your “Leave” vote and magically understand that you were actually just saying some things about the EU should be fixed?
Even if “Remain” *had* won, did you really think they were going to look at the 47% “Leave” (or whatever it might have been) and go “ah yes, we have received your statement of protest and criticism, we’ll get right on fixing those things that you didn’t actually have any way of enumerating on a single binary ballot but we somehow know what you mean anyway”?
Voting is not a protest. Voting is voting. Voting is choosing an outcome.
(I’m not claiming we’re any smarter about that in the US. See also: Nader voters & Bush. I’m still amazed.)
TAKE NOTE AMERICA- VOTING FOR TRUMP IN PROTEST IS A SHIT THING TO DO TO THE NATION

Boris Johnson, who is a vocal leader of the campaign to leave the EU, gave a polarizing pro-Brexit speech. Now uploaded by the throwaway Pornhub account BrexitVote, the video has a ridiculous number of views.

bloody british immigrants, taking jobs from hardworking europeans
Jamaican poet Kei Miller wrote a very interesting essay about the difference between the ‘immigrant’ and the ‘expat’ which concluded with this:
My problem with the word ‘immigrant’ is that I am only an immigrant because I am Jamaican and I am black. I watch shows on British television of Britons who want to move to ‘A Place in the Sun’ – to a small village in France, or Morocco, or even Jamaica. Their impulses are the same as the woman from Kingston or the man from Lagos who moves to the UK. No one migrates for a worse life. But when the British pack their bags and leave they become Expats, not Immigrants. What a thing! The same process. The same act. But different words. Immigrants are not equal to Expats. Immigration is a problem; expatriation isn’t. Immigrants are expected to always be grateful, but a little bit angry. Expats are allowed to just be – to simply enjoy this new country that they have chosen to live in, and which they might very well choose to leave. The expat is allowed to be a savvy, cosmopolitan person who simply lives somewhere else than the place in which they were born and they don’t have to appear on panel after panel angsting about it all.

And that’s just in reference to the rest of the EU.
(Coming from someone who is generally assumed to fall into the “expat” category, by virtue of having come from the US. So is my Swedish partner. AFAICT, a lot of it seems to depend on perceived standard of living in your country of origin.)
we’re here because we’re here
Thousands of volunteers took part in a UK-wide event on Friday 1 July
2016, as a modern memorial to mark the centenary of the Battle of the
Somme. 19,240 men were killed on the first day of the battle in 1916 –
the bloodiest day in British military history.‘we’re here because we’re here’ saw around 1400 voluntary
participants dressed in First World War uniform appear unexpectedly in
locations across the UK. Each participant represented an individual
soldier who was killed on that day one hundred years before.#WeAreHere
If you ever feel bad about what you’ve done with your life, just remember that David Cameron fucked a pig, allowed 2000+ people to die after benefit cuts, single-handedly attempted to destroy the United Kingdom in his desperation for votes, and then immediately resigned so he didn’t have to clean up that mess.
Did he really fuck a pig?
Well, he never specifically denied it, from what I remember…
