Clara may have pretended she invented fish “because I dislike swimming alone”, but, long before her time, the Doctor invented companions because he disliked travelling alone.
So both female companions written by Moffat are mysteries and described as “impossible”.
I wish he’d just let women be characters rather than great mysteries for the male characters to solve.
I don’t think Moffat’s particularly good at writing women in general, so I’m kind of tempted to agree, but…
For most of RTD’s run, the show was about the Doctor being a great mystery that the female characters- Rose, Martha, etc – had to solve. (And they often didn’t get rewarded for their efforts.) So now the shoe is on the other foot to some extent. Plus Clara’s an enigma for the audience to solve as well- we were always a lot more privy to the Doctor’s inner thoughts than his companions were, we knew him better than they did, but Clara’s a total mystery to both us and him. And I’m really looking forward to finding out who or what she is, just as I did with the Doctor when I first started watching back in 2005…..
