that romeo and juliet thing

So, I saw something on Google Images about a book idea you had. I was wondering, if it were alright with you, if I could write about it? It was about a group of kids in high school who split into two different sides whilst arguing whether Romeo and Juliet is about the stupidity of youth or it’s a beautiful tragedy. -ivyleafybae

Ah, well! I did write it myself, it’s essentially done, I’m just sending it round to agencies. (And getting nowhere at the moment).

Hopefully one day it’ll be a published book. On the other hand, I’ve gradually come to realise I can’t really stop other people writing it? Putting the idea online in the first place was… a bit of an error.

On the other hand, it’s pretty unlikely that anything anyone else comes up with will be the exact same story I’ve written, so… bearing everything in mind… I guess my basic answer is, “yes as long as you don’t make it into a book and try to get it published, I really want to do that, hopefully may still.”

dear young creative people,

please don’t post your concepts on here unless you intend for them to become free domain.

if you’re an artist or a writer and you think out loud like “what if there was a story where [original concept] happened?” somebody will take it and write it for you. somebody will draw it. somebody might make a kickstarter and get it funded without ever crediting you. if that’s your intent, that’s great. but really, don’t post your ideas if you want to be the one to make them happen

way too often i’ve seen someone start musing about a concept and then 10 replies later someone has drawn art and developed a novel around it, without the OP ever saying they could. hell, movies are being made off of tumblr posts at this point.

so 1) if you’re a creator and want your ideas to stay your own, be cautious! it might be tempting to get the immediate validation, but i promise you it’ll be more rewarding to see your own idea to fruition than to get 50-100k notes of people who borrow your thoughts and forget you were ever the source.

and 2) if you see someone throwing their ideas around, don’t write/draw/expand on them until you’ve been given permission.

Cannot stress this enough!! I’ve had a few fun ideas about Vampires, thinking I’d never use them. literally over 1 million notes combined later, comic, fanfics, and short stories, I’m sitting here actually writing a book of Vampire short stories, and I’m like! I hope I beat all those people to actually publishing something, because it was MY idea. Whoops!!!

and then you have buzzfeed and facebook out there yanking our text posts without credit, so our ideas are getting spread much further than our cultivated blogging platforms. smfh!

Yeah, this was the mistake I made with that Romeo and Juliet thing…

The other day I had a really good idea for a story:

A high school Shakespeare club angrily splits into two groups when they can’t agree on the correct interpretation of Romeo and Juliet. One group thinks it’s a cautionary tale about the stupidity of youth and shallow lust; the other group think it’s a beautiful tragedy about poisonous hatred conquered by love. Reconciliation seems impossible-

then a person from one group falls in love with a person from the other

#it would be better if somehow EVERY OTHER SHAKESPEARE WAS HAPPENING AT ONCE#like you got a benedict and beatice b-story#and then somebody see’s their dad’s ghost#and there’s cross-dressing#and three upperclassmen tell macbeth he will be drama club president

oh my god I need this

nobody dies but SEVEN PEOPLE ARE EXPELLED

@sarah531 so when is this being made/ written? :)

Well –

(you got in just before I blocked this post from notifications!)

– the very basic original idea (none of the additions, those belong to other people, just the Romeo & Juliet-put-on-a-play bit) actually has been written. I’ve sent it out to a few agents, but haven’t had any luck as of yet.

It’s slightly less about Shakespeare than I anticipated, and more about the power of stories in general. But I hope people would like it, if it ever properly saw the light of day. I liked writing it.

im legit so hype to be able to read TRAJT im so so so excited. Does it have an official title, something other than what we all call it, the whole “that romeo and juliet thing” -elliexlu

Awwww thank you!

I’m sending it out to agencies under the title “That Romeo and Juliet Thing” I like it, it’s just kinda…snappy. Plus I can’t think of it as anything else now!

You guys will be the first to know if anything comes of it. I really, really hope it does…

Hey where can I get a link to your Romeo Juliet story? I saw a screenshot of your post the other day about your idea, and I was just looking you up to ask permission to write it, but it looks like you’ve started! Send me a link if you don’t mind. It was a brilliant idea. -theres-always-that-one-kid

Aw thanks very much! It’s not quite finished yet though. (Currently, it is over 51,000 words long. Eep.) You can follow its progress here, though, and read excerpts!

Was gonna ask for your permission to write the Romeo and Juliet book, but alas, you are already writing it :’) -kitt-cliffran

Aw, well, thanks for coming to ask! I appreciate it! Also-

it is actually DANGEROUSLY CLOSE to being done. It’s scary. It’s over 48,000 words at the moment, and it has Plot and Character and Themes and everything. Maybe you guys will see it soon? God, I hope so.
