Seismic trucks won’t pass, says Elsipogtog war chief, calls for help from all Nations

ELSIPOGTOG, NEW BRUNSWICK – A sacred fire, which must burn continuously and be monitored for four days, has been lit by Mi’kmaq peoples from all corners of traditional Mi’kma’ki, who have gathered in the New Brunswick community of Elsipogtog. They, as well as non-Indigenous peoples from the local communities and beyond, have now begun to congregate in a field – with permission given by the owner – adjacent to the junction of highway 126 and highway 116 west.

The gathering, which now comprises about 40 people, is directly in the path of seismic testing trucks – or “thumpers” – that are conducting geological surveying on behalf of SWN Resources Canada. SWN is exploring for shale gas deposits. Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples worry that the seismic testing will lead to hydraulic fracturing – or fracking – of Kent County, much of which is under exploratory lease to SWN.

Elsipogotg war chief John Levi has noted that the gathering will remain peaceful, but that the seismic testing will not be allowed to continue past the sacred fire.

“We’re not going to let them pass. This is the reason why we’ve set up,” Levi told the Halifax Media Co-op. “We’ve made our sacred fire. We’re going to stand our ground here. This would be the spot here, so we’re asking for support from all non-Native and Native peoples.”

They WANT to stomp our asses, and have been pushing for a confrontation for over a year now. It started with Attawapiskat and has escalated since.

They will happily kill some of us to put us in our place.

This is real.

Transgender people in Greece are now being rounded up and detained in a continuation of the social cleansing of the “undesirables”.

Student expelled from college for being a lesbian, forced to repay scholarship funds

A conservative Christian college in Omaha expelled a student one semester before her graduation when they found out she was a lesbian — and then demanded she repay them for scholarship funds she had earned.

Grace University has refused to transfer Danielle Powell’s credits to another school unless she pays $6,300, the tuition from her spring semester in 2011, when administrators found out she was gay. Powell would have been the first in her family to earn a college degree.

Michael James, executive vice president at Grace University, justified the college’s actions to The Huffington Post, affirming that its student handbook forebade “sexually immoral behavior.” Quoting from the handbook, James stated:

“Any student involved in sexually immoral behavior, including premarital sex, adultery, and homosexual acts, is at minimum placed on University probation and may be subject to a Judiciary Hearing.”

Powell and her wife started a petition to get Grace University to drop its demands. (By the way, they’re the couple who got engaged onstage at a Macklemore concert — watch the video!) She deserves better than this. Help her out?

So, to all of you who follow me and who are not from Brazil, you should read this, and please reblog, if you can.

These are some photos of what is happening to our country today. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are facing protest all over the cities. To fight for their rights. Our country is living a hidden dictatorship. The protests started because the bus fee raised 20 brazilian cents. Which doesn’t seem that much, but you all should know that millions of brazilians live with a monthly income of no more than 700 brazilian reais (something like 350 american dollars). Some people live and raise families with that money. Monthly. To these people, $0,20 for each bus means a lot.

But the thing is: what initially was intended to be a protest against the bus fee turned into a protest against the dictatorial government. A government that every year, steals millions of dollars of their people, in their own benefit. A government so corrupt, the population got used to it, and make jokes about it. In this country, a school teacher has a yearly income of $8400. The governors, on the other side, earn, for the same time, about $300.000. To work less. And they don’t even show up to work. And besides that salary, they steal.

And now, people are going to the streets. And the response is photographed. The government is brutally attacking everyone. I mean everyone. Protesters, pedestrians, reporters, photographers. Everyone. For no reason. They just attack. And bomb. And hurt.

The media is absolutely corrupted. The brazilian media makes it look like a violent act, that has to be fought with equal violence. That is a lie. 15 thousand people are going to the streets of Sao Paulo with no guns, no fire, no weapons. And they are being hurt, persecuted, and arrested. Some of them have to pay bail fees up to $20.000.

If you came all the way down here, please, reblog this. Help making the world know what is really going on here. This country, this beautiful country, with beautiful beaches, and women, and music, is now screaming in protest. This is the country in which the World Cup will be in 2014. A country that worries about the World Cup much more than it worries about the welfare of its citizens.

My name is Ynanna Djehuty, also known as Carmen Mojica. I am reaching out to you today to ask for your help on my journey to become a midwife. I have just been accepted to Maternidad La Luz, a midwifery school and birth clinic in El Paso, Texas. I am overjoyed and overwhelmed with excitement as I prepare for my studies to begin in September. I need help securing donations, grants and scholarships for my tuition, books, room and board.

I am an Afro-Dominicana born and raised in the Bronx. I am a certified birth doula and artist. I am a member of the International Center for Traditional Childbearing (ICTC). The focus of my work is the empowerment of women and people of the African Diaspora, specifically discussing the Afro-Latina Identity. I utilize my experience as a birth doula to raise awareness on maternal and infant health for women, highlighting the disparities in the healthcare system in the United States for women of color. Becoming licensed as a midwife is my direct and physical contribution to ensuring future generations are born into peace and calm environments.Midwifery is my calling. I see a huge need for compassionate, woman-centered care for women of the African Diaspora and am stepping up to serve my community. I have been particularly interested in being trained in a bilingual environment so that I may use my native Spanish language to assist women who otherwise would not have access to compassionate midwifery care. Women who are native Spanish speakers often are not truly listened to and in turn are not completely informed during their birth process. My presence in the global community is essential to adding to the number of Spanish-speaking midwives.

As a student, I will be serving a mostly Spanish-speaking population of Mexican and Mexican American women. Attending Maternidad La Luz would allow me to be licensed as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) by the end of 2014. I have chosen this particular path to midwifery because I am interested in providing birthing women of color with a option of care that is mother-centered. I have dreams of opening up my own birth clinic in the future, and studying at a birth center such as Maternidad La Luz is excellent training for this endeavor. This needs to  stop.  This is an absolute invasion of women, this is disgusting, and this Tumblr needs to go away.

We need to report both the Twitter and the Tumblr.

Creepshots is a website for men to take “sexy” pictures of unsuspecting women, and from their ‘About Us’ section it states: “Creepshots are CANDID pictures.  If a person is posing or aware that a picture is being taken, then it is no longer a creepshot.”

These men take pictures of women who are unaware and post them.

And then under their rules for getting the pictures removed?  One of the two options is to “appreciate” the fact that some  gross man took a picture of you.

Hello tumblr staff,

Please remove/ban the blog creepshots.tumblr.com. They post demeaning, humiliating and objectifying pictures of women (typically their asses and breasts and even under their skirts) that they take without their permission on the street and in public. These guys were banned and deleted from reddit. Can you really say that tumblr is less of a safe respectable place than reddit?

What they are doing is wrong. Many, many users on tumblr feel violated and unsafe by this blog’s presence in the tumblr community. These men are violating the privacy of women everywhere. They specifically state in their about me: “Creepshots are CANDID pictures. If a person is posing or aware that a picture is being taken, then it is no longer a creepshot. A true creepshot captures the natural sexy, embarrassing or funny aspect of the subject mater/person without their knowledge.” They specifically state that only accept pictures of people whose privacy has been violated (source: http://creepshots.tumblr.com/AboutUs).

Please do something to show that you care about the safety and dignity of women, particularly the women in the tumblr community. If you don’t care about that, can you at least ban/delete them in the name of protecting yourself from legal liability? because there’s a strong likelihood that some of those pictures are of underaged girls. Given that these men are taking pics of young women they don’t know, how can they know their ages for certain? All it takes is one concerned parent or adolescent seeing their picture on that site, and if you don’t take it down, legal action could be taken against you.

So please, in the name of what is ethical and right and even legally responsible and smart, delete creepshots. Thank you.

Ok so here’s the deal.

Last night our internet was cut off, simply because we can’t afford to keep paying for it, I’m currently writing this from a shitty internet cafe about a mile away from where I live.

The other donation page is still up, but has so little traffic I’m kind of only leaving it up as a reminder by this point.

I have kept back a few points that illustrate daily just how dire the situation my Mother and I are in, simply because it’s personal. but I think I really have to illustrate the point now.

My Mother and I shower once a month. We wash our hair once a fortnight. This is because, thanks to the situation the Government has put us in, we can barely afford water. It has been this way since November last year.

Also since November last year, we have not once used the Heating, regardless of the fact that this meant we had to go through the coldest Winter Britain has had in recorded history with no heating whatsoever.

We’re looking for places to move to, but nowhere in our price bracket will accept people on Benefits, they say this phrase: ‘No DDR’, which means they do not want people on Benefits.

I usually save aside £10 a month for luxuries, just so Mother and I can continue to feel Human rather than depressed grey blobs, we barely even have that anymore.

Work is non-existent for someone with my qualifications, and believe me when I say that, while I do not regret taking six years out of education to help care for my Grandmother, I begin to resent it a little when I’m told I’m under-qualified.

I don’t expect to raise the full amount I;m asking for, simply because it’s a lot. But it’s there to illustrate just how seriously we’re backed into a corner.

Mother is depressed, and her PTSD is acting up in reaction to the constant stress we are under. I, myself, am only kept on the straight and narrow due to the presence of my friends, and now with the internet cut off, I won’t even have that.

It isn’t hard to reblog this, please.

This is my best friend, Billy. I’ve known him basically since I was born. Our parents were friends, and it was always the joke between our families that we were going to get married, since my parents happened to have a girl and his a guy, at the same time. He means a lot to me, even though he lives thousands of miles away from me right now. The important thing though, is that he’s gone missing. He is a danger to himself, suffering from depression and extensive drug use in the past year. He was going through rehabilitation, but now he’s missing. He’s disappeared. The last he was seen was in Juno Beach, Florida. This is off of northern Palm Beach County. He’s been missing since Sunday afternoon, over forty hours. The U.S. Coast Guard searched for him throughout Monday night, and they’re unsure that the search will continue any longer. He was last seen wearing a pair of green shorts. It’s uncertain whether he has gone missing deliberately, or the coast was too rough. This is one hundred percent serious and I’m terrified. If anybody in or near Palm Beach County has seen or heard from him, please please please contact his mother at (321) 750-3469. This is so serious, and only serious calls are wanted. Please help find my best friend. I’m lost without him.
